The 12 is clearly better than your 6...

That is significant difference. I will be upgrading from a 6S+ to the 12 Pro Max. Really looking forward to the improved camera system.

Real quick about gloves... I live in a cold climate too... and FaceID is definitely superior to TouchID. With FaceID all you need are some "touch gloves" that allow your touch to go through the glove to the touch screen and you can leave your gloves on and swipe up - then FaceID can do its thing (even works well with hats on, etc.).

With TouchID you have NO choice other than inputting your pin all the time - or taking your gloves off.

This is not too mention all the other awesome things about FaceID and logging into apps, etc. as others have said. It gets pretty impossible to go backward after a while...

The cameras are good. However, all the over the top Apple marketing makes it sound like it's a DSLR killer, and it's not, by a country mile. Look at the size of those sensors: it just takes common sense. A sensibly priced Sony EVIL will run circles around it.

No, Apple isnt. A quality photographer will get quality photos out of the iPhone 12. If you can't, the problem is not the camera in the iPhone...

I noticed a difference in the camera from the 6s to the SE2. I to prefer Touch ID one of the reasons being I’m not comfortable with or beams being shined in my eyes multiple times a day.
I didn’t know if opened it brought you to the notification screen. I’d rather go to the Home Screen first and then bring down my notifications. There’s times I need something else and not have time to deal with a notification but want to leave it as a reminder.

It doesn’t really..if you click the button on the side then it will wake the phone and show you notifications. However, if you pick up the phone (which activates the screen) then swipe up it takes you right to the Home Screen. That’s how it is intended to be used and is very intuitive. It’s a pretty weak complaint from the OP and doesn’t make sense to me.

It might take you a day to get used to it but it works very well.

I could tell a big difference going from X to 11 in terms of picture quality. Even though Face ID doesn’t work the way you expected when unlocking your iPhone, the feature is a real time saver when unlocking apps and other places you need to authenticate. Hopefully over time you’ll appreciate the changes more. In the mean time, try a nice scotch before bed and get a good nights sleep.

Don’t take this the wrong way but 6s holdout users are a specific type of consumer

If they’ve held out this long they’re unlikely to be impressed by a new iPhone since by the end of the day it performs the same fundamental functions. Just way better.

There are exceptions but that’s been my observation

Smartphones aren’t your cup of tea beyond necessity. Which is fine

Then there’s Touch ID vs Face ID

In these cases where you “have” to upgrade because 6s has run its course, I think se2 is the finest option of all. There isn’t even a form factor change

(Love my se2 as well)

not to forget with touchID you have to press it to unlock the phone. it doesnt even close to FaceID. i find FaceID much more simpler and faster!

So I got my iPhone 12 Pro to replace my iPhone 6S. There was no particular problem with 6S, just thinking that after 5 generations of iPhones maybe it is time to upgrade and see the new world. Mostly I have been interested in the cameras & computational photography.

- Unlocking with Face ID. I thought it works so that you look at the phone and it unlocks AND goes to home screen. But no! You need to wipe up to access home screen. WTF, seriously? Touch ID is much easier, just place your thumb and off you go. No need to hit in the border with finger and then swipe. I was sure I was doing something wrong since I didn't believe it works this way. Outside I need to take my glove out. If my finger is wet or dirty I still need to touch the glass.

- Telephoto lens flare. I hope my camera is flawed but I don't think so. In low light it is totally common to get lens flare from bright lights. And those flares aren't beautiful, more like getting reflections from dirty window glass.

Sorry for the rant, I needed to steam somewhere.
Is it 2017 again? Face ID requires a swipe so you see your notifications. LMAO.

If your images are flaring, clean your lens and probably your hands too.

The difference is noticeable for 5 or 6 year difference regardless of phone brand.
Maybe it's their eyesight. 😂 I can tell a clear difference in photos between my iPhone X and the 12 Pro. Especially night photos.

Night mode does not work on the 2x lens, it just crops the 1x lens.

Well.. the night mode is supported on zoom so..

You Really think this sucks op, for a cell phone (Night mode on 11 pro max)? I don’t, and I also have Sony mirrorless full frame cameras with GM and Zeiss lenses.

Based on tests conducted personally, there's a noticeable difference performance wise between the 8 and the 6s; then the 11 is slightly better than the 8 especially at handling apps. So no way is the 6s about the same performance-wise than the 12 pro. Maybe if all you do is text and call; but then why buy such a premium phone to begin with?

Ridley Scott would make better videos with a potato than I would with a Red camera. So what.

Now you can rant about it all you want, but the fact remains that a mid level camera from 7 years ago has better lenses, better sensors and therefore captures more light and produces more accurate and detailed images. And that's the unaltered, non-marketing story: a 600€ camera is incredibly superior to any "Pro" phone at being a camera.

And it makes complete sense, because the camera part of the phone actually costs a couple of bucks and is mini sized. Your average "serious" lens costs more than the whole thing.

You know what a 600€ average camera can't do? Get clicks and ads/sponsorship money to hype laden youtubers, blogs, magazines... like the iPhone. That it can't do.

As an iPhone 6 holdout I completely agree with this. I tried the 2020 SE and returned it because it was a great phone but at the end of the day did the same stuff as my 6, just way faster (I'm sure the photos would have been much better too but I didn't test that). The SE is great value for money of course, but actually quite a lot to pay for apps to open faster.

My 6 is no longer getting software updates (which also means I have limited AirPod Pro and Watch functionality) so I will be buying the 12 Mini. I can't wait to go back to that style of phone! Like the OP, I had no idea you still have to touch the screen when using Face ID though, and my immediate reaction is the same as theirs. It's reassuring to hear from the other posters that so many still find it preferable over touch ID (fortunately we don't need to wear masks where I live).

So I got my iPhone 12 Pro to replace my iPhone 6S.

- I took some photographs of kids in normal night indoor lightning. Camera selected exposure 1/17 and aperture f2. I cannot find used ISO anywhere but I'm sure under 800. On my DSLR I can use ISO 6400 and the pictures look great. So if someone is saying smart phones are replacing DSLR I will laugh all the way out..
The sensor on an iPhone 12 is has a surface area that is only about 1/3 larger than the 6S sensor. A crop DSLR sensor is around 13 to 14 times as large as the 12 sensor, while a full frame is about 30 times as large as the 12 sensor.

You have nice insight here. This could be true. Maybe one of my problems was that I was happy with 6S. Absolutely no complaints. And then quite big expectations that some miracles happen if I upgrade after five generations.

I can see this. I'm not that keen to "upgrade" to SE either. I'm quite sure that nothing really changes (as thadoggfather wrote performs fundamental functions) when I buy SE. And considering my claims here that is very probable :D

What if I don't want to see my notifications? I just want my phone open without touching it. Just pick the phone and open it to the previous app that I was using. You can laugh but many others would like the same functionality it seems ..

About flaring: All lenses 100% clean. The flaring is absolutely flaw in the design.

B- troll effort.

The difference is noticeable for 5 or 6 year difference regardless of phone brand.

Seriously, I'm not trying to troll. This was just my exhaust / rant.

I have to underline; I'm not seriously claiming that there isn't ANY difference. I was just blown out how small the differences were. Really. I know this upsets some. Remember these are just MY thoughts, not a global opinion.

Maybe I was biased by the hype and that there should be big (this is of course subjective what is big) leaps in five generations of iPhone. And maybe I'm a stereotype of satisified 6S user who thinks 6S is still good phone. Good luck trying to impress those :D

I'm not trying to bash this phone. These are just my open wondering thoughts and initial impressions.

So you asked side-by-side comparison. Here are some. Now I wish I should haven't done this.

Sure (and thank god!) 12 Pro has better dynamic range. Sure the field picture has a more vibrant colors. But otherwise .. uhm ..

So I got my iPhone 12 Pro to replace my iPhone 6S. There was no particular problem with 6S, just thinking that after 5 generations of iPhones maybe it is time to upgrade and see the new world. Mostly I have been interested in the cameras & computational photography.

I've been now using the phone for under six hours and I feel dissapointed. Here are some of my rants:

- Unlocking with Face ID. I thought it works so that you look at the phone and it unlocks AND goes to home screen. But no! You need to wipe up to access home screen. WTF, seriously? Touch ID is much easier, just place your thumb and off you go. No need to hit in the border with finger and then swipe. I was sure I was doing something wrong since I didn't believe it works this way. Outside I need to take my glove out. If my finger is wet or dirty I still need to touch the glass.

- Camera performance in low light. The images are colorful and overall nice when looking at 50% zoom level but at 100% the image looks horrible smushy. I sure hope the cameras perform better tomorrow in daylight. The night mode is just a gimmick, the outcome images are not usable for prints or anything serious. Maybe the quality increases if one uses a tripod but then it is really the same to bring a decent DSLR and get sharp images.

- Telephoto lens flare. I hope my camera is flawed but I don't think so. In low light it is totally common to get lens flare from bright lights. And those flares aren't beautiful, more like getting reflections from dirty window glass.

- Home screen display usage; why there isn't an extra row of icons on such tall screen? The space is wasted with those dots and there is some space below top bar and first row of app icons. I need to grab my 6S and compare, I'm pretty sure nthe screen space is just totally wasted.

It is freaking 1200 euros phone and currently I think the photos are from some ancient iPhone! Also I cannot see any significant performance boost anywhere. It is unbelievable close to my iPhone 6S. Five generations and this little difference?

I'm seriously considering returning this and maybe getting SE - or even returning back to 6S.

Sorry for the rant, I needed to steam somewhere.

Thanks for the info. I am in the same situation, considering to replace my 6s. I might keep waiting a bit longer.
Just curious, which iOS version running on your 6s? Mine stay at iOS 12 and it still speedy & minimal lag.
