However, outside the USA, drones have changed high-altitude mountaineering in the past few years with both filming climbers and skiers on 8,000 meter peaks, and performing rescue operations on those mountains.

In Germany you need a „drone flying license“ with a test and everything now + an insurance on top and those questions are actually quiet hard and technical specific like UGH and even then you are basically not allowed to fly anywhere anymore
Not entirely true. The EASA rules are quite lax so long as you’re flying drones or a suitable mass.

Looks great but wow that's expensive. Looks like the Mavic is being positioned to take over from the Phantom? Add to that in the UK as in other places it's now pretty restrictive to attempt to fly drones >250g. DJI Mini 2 is a great option for me.

I want it. But I can’t justify spending that much on a prosumer drone. I can’t imagine the shots are much better than my $400 DJI Mini 2, which I feel like is only missing 4K60 but can do 4K30. Variable aperture is nice though because you don’t need ND filters all the time.
It’s a 4/3 sensor. I think it’s quite a bit better

It’s not legal to shoot down a drone in the United States. Don’t spread misinformation. Why are you even talking about drone laws when you clearly have no idea about them at all?

Source: Am a drone operator.
It is a federal offense to shoot down ANY aircraft in FAA controlled airspace. Land owners do not own the air above their land. Source: I read the laws.

Stop fake flexing.

This thing sounds amazing. I've wanted to get into drones for a while now and from what I understand, DJI is the best game in town.

...except for that whole sending your data to china thing.

The Mavic 2 already took over from phantom.

Love the tech and camera specs. Really looking forward to this filtering down into the Mavic Air line at some point.

Correction: It is a federal offense to shoot down any aircraft, including drones, period.

Unless in the vicinity of an airport, "controlled" airspace (Class E) doesn't start until 1200 feet above ground level (AGL). Drones are generally limited to 400 feet AGL, which keeps them in Class G. It's still illegal to shoot them down.

So... Why is this posted on mac rumors?? What's it got to do with Apple ?

its the typical thinking of techs post sites that basically clone each other. Kind of like Deep Space 9 (the collective)

FYI DJI is required to report all data to the Chinese Communist Party including any data you give DJI. It’s required of all Chinese companies. Even though you don’t live in China. It’s why they’ve been flagged. Just thought I’d throw that out there. I’ll pass thanks.

Especially when it comes to movies, drone visuals don't quite express the physical human dynamic of a camera-op in a helicopter. Drones are not just one step removed, but endoskeletally. A human being holding a camera up in the helicopter often makes it feel as if you are looking at said visual through your eyes. Whereas drones often personally take me out of the movie. You'll see many films in the 70's and 80's where the helicopter camera-op would deliberately move the camera for that effect.

You are correct, but failed to take into account the difference in height from the base camp to the summit..

K2 base camp height is approximately 5,150 meters (11,355 feet) above sea level, while the summit of K2 is 8,611 meters (28,251 feet).
https://www.lonelyplanet.com/articles/how-to-trek-to-k2-base-camp

The summit of K2 is more than two miles higher than the base camp where the drone was launched. Read the links in the two posts I included in my first post about this.

I owned the Mavic 2 for a good bit before I ultimately sold it -- I made some fantastic images from it. This looks like a great update though.

Well, for one thing the "Cine" edition of this drone uses Apple ProRes, and the new M1 Pro and M1 Max processor chips from Apple include one or two custom ProRes processing cores.
Great point. I can't wait for articles on the other 1,000 recording devices with ProRes support.

I have said it before, and will reiterate again, if a drone every flies on my property (unless it is like 100’ or more off the ground) I WILL shoot it out of the sky. Laws be damned. I’m not willing to let some potential creeper scare or injure my livestock or peep at my daughter.

That’s why God made shotguns. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Well actually since technically a drone is an aircraft (per the FAA which is why they can regulate their use) shooting at an aircraft is a federal offense. So shooting at a drone even if illegally flying is a crime, no different than if you shot at a 737 flying over your house. You don't own the air above your house so shooting it up there is illegal (besides the discharging of a firearm next to a dwelling is often illegal in many locales). The correct course of action is reporting to law enforcement.

I would like to see them add ADS-B (the air to air position reporting that airplanes use to avoid collisions) to the controller. There is already a raspberry pi ADS-B hat so it's not super complicated to add this (not sure about battery life impact) but then we don't end up with the idiots flying in the approach pattern of a major airport (illegal, but that's not helpful in the moment for avoiding it)

I will report it, after I shoot it from the sky (I live in the country, btw). :) The law needs changed, and bad, amoral laws should be disobeyed. In fact, I posit it is our patriotic duty to disobey unjust laws, but that is another tangent entirely.

My right to privacy of my own property supersedes your right to fly a drone above it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
