I have always used the Apple earbuds without any problems. I did purchase some Skullcandy ear buds last year, but I eventually stopped using them. I stream music on my iPhone everyday at work for 6+ hours and the earbuds have never hurt my ears.

I use it by default. I can never seem to find my ear bud extension for my lifeproof case. So the only headphones that fits my case without the extension is Apple's.

They are good enough for impromptu phone meetings or for listening to an audiobook before going to bed. If I want to listen/enjoy music, there are much better options for sure.

The sound is horrible.

I use them mostly because reason 1/2

I think most people use them. Why?
-They are free
-they are there (no need to get others separately)
-no worries about them not working (see below)
-not enough knowledge; I have seen people take there iPod to apple and say that they don't know what to do because the included headphones broke and that they don't know if others are compatible
-iconic
-seniors + people who don't care think they are just fine
-people who can't justify spending anymore money after spending so much.

They are the worst: both the stock ones that come with the phone and the $80 "upgrades" with the soft silicone earbuds.

The sound is bad on both of them, although the expensive ones are better than the free ones.

The only good thing they have going for them is the integrated mic/controls.

The rubber material they use is also extremely cheap, and I have had every pair (3-4) start to tear away at certain places (especially the point where the hard plastic joins the soft plastic; the gray rubber part).

You would think Apple would upgrade the materials for the $80 version.

If you don't need the mic/controls, I would switch over to Sony. I got a flat-wire (no tangles) version and the sound is amazing.

Yeah, I've been extremely disappointed with the in-ear headphones. While top end and mid-range performance is okay, there's little or no base to speak of, and more importantly the design isn't very good - the tips don't form good seals and are nearly impossible to keep attached for any great deal of time. Apple then make replacing them a massive pain in the ass. And as you say, the rubber simply disolves when exposed to air.

Honestly, I don't even use the earbuds that came with the iphone packaging. They are worse than those that apple sells at the store. The rubber thing that goes around the earpiece is so fragile that after some use they start to wear and tear.

I use the Beats by Dr. Dre Solo HD.

The original Apple earbuds had larger earpieces than the ones they have now, I bought snap-on covers with silicon earbuds to fix that problem..
They sounded ok, but then then they redesigned them with smaller speakers.. So the covers didn't work anymore.. :(

I couldn't get them to stay in at all, it was annoying because I could never get a decent seal with them.

So I get the upgraded Apple earbuds with the soft silicone earbuds.. Those were much better fit for my ear, but the triangle shaped case itself turned out to be stressful on where the wires went into the earbuds, and the rubber area disintegrated.

I just ordered a pair of Klipsch Reference S4i earbuds; They have excellent reviews and am looking forward to trying those out.

They are better than Earbuds I purchased for less than $30, last longer too.

I only use them at work or if I forget my Bose AE2i at home.

Never really. They sit beside my bed if I want to listen to some music really quitely just before sleeping. Otherwise, I like my Sennheiser's.

Another thing I just realized is that the stock Apple buds don't give you sound or comfort fatigue like other in-ear buds do.

For example the typical in-ear buds like the Beats by Dre and its clones do sound better because of noise isolation, but think about that isolation. It feels like your ears are too plugged up and the sound pocket is overwhelming. It gets intense after awhile. You can't listen for too long until you feel like you want to take them out and let your ears "breathe."

Not to mention you have to clean your ears with Q-tips every day cuz of all the grease and sweat that happens from the isolations cups.

As far as sound, that booming bass is more like a condensed tunnel/pocket of intensity and is not as pleasurable as feeling the bass in your whole body from speakers. When i take them out, it feels like my ears have been bombarded with intensity in an unhealthy way.

With the Apple buds, I never get uncomfortable or need to take them out. That might be a reason why they are stock.. Because they don't fatigue people.

I never use them unless I don't have a choice. They're a bit too big and hurt my ears after wearing them for extended periods of time. Plus the quality isn't so good. I like to use my own in ear headphones with better sound isolation and quality.
