I think the majority here don't have a problem with newbies but there are a few bad Apples that think that their views are correct, act arrogant/full of themselves and have to resort to personal insults when a disagreement happens.

Any newb hazing is only meant to toughen you up before you begin posting in PSRI, which you can do after 250 postings.

I know the OP is no longer here, but.

There are (some) people on any forum that somehow get the idea that if someone is new they are very dumb and just started life. Some think that also means they are also are "semi moderators" These are a minority though, and as I said, pretty much on any forum. I have owned and administrated forums, it happens. That being said I have yet to experience any of it here.

From my point of view on macrumors I have not experienced any problems at all, I have asked a couple of things and I have gotten great response in the way of tips, suggestions, opinions and experience. Like in my "15" base macbook pro as desktop replacement" thread. I appreciate everyone that replied there, great info from great people.

Thank you macrumors and the members here.

Just my humble opinion.

PS. That's coming from an old, disabled cranky guy on VA meds that's not always the easiest to get along with.:)

When I try to post information, my advice is generally ignored even if I give the right answer and someone copies me:confused:
There are so many members on this forum it's hard to recognize people. It's not that they ignore you it's just other people only normally read the OP and not subsequent posts so information is duplicated. It's nothing against you personally it's just the way large forums work.

Of course if you are good at posting good information/help people would eventually start recognizing who you are and you'll gain some macrumors respect.

Edit: looks like he's been banned. Wow that was really quick.

Most users here think they're special because they've been on a internet forum for many years. Welcome to MR.

Try not to post on page 1 threads...

In my experience there are 2 things that should be done to improve this forum:

1. Avatars for EVERYONE

2. Age should always be displayed next to each post. This is of paramount importance as certain "opinions" can cause whole threads to derail...

If macrumors has any aspiration of becoming a proper usergroup where people can genuinely help one another and form friendships then there is no real reason for anonymity!

My name is Michael, I'm 30 years old, I live in London, I'm a professional architect and a computer enthusiast (since 1991). I've been using a mac since 2004.

Absolutely not, that is a huge breach of privacy. Why should age matter? An opinion is an opinion. As long as people stick to the 13+ rule most people are mature and capable of good discussion.

I think he meant the forum join date, not the users age.

Do you seriously think that a 13 year old can have a mature discussion with an adult? This is not simply a matter of intelligence. Younger people lack life experiences, knowledge and people skills. And you know what? This is perfectly NORMAL because they are CHILDREN!

I think if anything this forum should have a dedicated grownup/pro section so that people can discuss their software/hardware issues without being molested by hormone driven teenagers...

Concerning breach of privacy... have you heard of FACEBOOK? There are user groups there too and you get to see what most people had for breakfast before they get to reply to your post...

Yes, some can. Age doesn't always guarantee maturity and maturity isn't always limited by age.

And yet that is strictly voluntary if a person wants their personal information revealed on Facebook. Making a MR forum poster's age visible to everyone without their consent is definitely a violation of privacy.

We usually draw our examples from the norm...

I have no idea what the legal requirements are for setting up a forum in the US in regards to personal information. I definitely know however that it works on facebook where you get to see exactly who you're interacting with. Most people I have on my friends list I also know in real life and then some I have met online through groups of common interests like the apple or the Commodore groups.

The issue of new users vs dinosaurs never pops up there as people in general are far more cautious of confrontation. Just as they would be in real life...

I said nothing about legal requirements. I said revealing the age of posters without their consent is a violation of privacy. That's a fact. It has nothing to do with laws.

That's exactly why some people will never be on Facebook.

That is absolutely the opposite of my experience.

Note: I'm not saying ages should be revealed.

yet that would prevent little "jimmy" (aged 13) from bashing "Mr Roberts" (aged 41) for questioning the legitimacy or accuracy of an alleged rumor...

That's exactly why some people will never be on Facebook.

Is it because it's not as easy for them to hijack a thread and chav their way into the center of the attention while hiding behind a curtain of anonymity???

Totally absurd. I have avatars turned off because they're often distracting; forcing them is pointless because a) the name is enough and b) avatars can be and are changed at any time.

As far as age is concerned, that makes no sense at all, because a) I've personally seen a few 14/15-year-olds who write more mature and coherent posts than some 50-year-olds, and b) you can just lie about your age anyway.

Avatars are only allowed to old members or contributors. It just doesn't seem fair.

These are very rare exceptions and certainly not the norm.

I do agree with you on this one. There have been threads on this avatar issue before. It is kind of funny how the site rules and mods discourage posts that just bump post count, but we have these avatars you can only get after many posts, and the little name things by the username that are related to post count, both of which encourage meaningless posts to bump post counts.

Boo! Some god decided that my humorous nine-word reply was frivolous..can't believe this!

I do understand this Avatar system as a kind of playful bonus-system and while the threat of unrelated, meaningless 'bumping' posts is given, there is a sort of self-correction possible with the alert/report button...as someone obviously did with my post. Still can't believe it!

Re: the newbie-question. I experience MR like life in general: If you are kind to other people they will treat you the same, 'status' doesn't matter.

That's not true. I'm neither old nor a contributor.

If you're referring to the amount of time spent as a MR member, even that is a fallacy - there's no time limit to reach to qualify for having an avatar. The goal is simply to make productive posts and contribute to the community. It goes by quicker than you think.

It's like the joke about the person who hears his/her phone alert with a text message, falls all over him/herself rushing to see what it was, and the message simply says, "k." The idea is to reward people who make productive posts, not filler posts.

And who decides what is "productive" and what not?
Good judgement is usually sufficient. In cases where there's a question, ultimately, the moderation team. The rules give some insight:

Useless and one-word posts. Do not bother making posts with only one or two words (e.g., "cool" or LOL) or a smilie, or post simply to have the first reply in a thread. Such posts waste everyone's time and will be deleted. Posts saying "I agree", "+1", "this", "me too", or the equivalent are also routinely removed, so don't post them. If you aren't interested in a thread, skip the thread; don't post to tell us you aren't interested. If you celebrate making the first post in a news thread, your post will be deleted.
