How do you "reward" the people who make productive posts and who decides what a productive post is?

I suppose if you want to call it that, your user title and ability to have an avatar are a "reward" of sorts - but most people who consider themselves members of a community, online or otherwise, join in not for any tangible reward, but rather to enjoy the experience.

As for your other question, GGJstudios addressed it quite sufficiently; that is, a post is considered productive unless it's outlined in the rules as being unproductive.

A good example is this very thread - there's some good dialog here, even if some of it comes across as a bit cross. In the end, there's a good exchange of information here, and that's what helps the community out.

There is a more fundamental problem with showing people's ages - people lie. How do you verify that when somebody gives their date of birth it is accurate? You depend on their honesty.

Yeah, I already mentioned that. ;) I lie 100% of the time on those silly online age-verification things, merely because I don't feel like taking the time to go through and accurately pick out the year/month/day, when it simply doesn't matter.

Er, back to the OP - "Do people on this site have something against Newbies?" Perhaps some are "guilty" of posting an issue here without first googling for a possible - and often - well-known solution elsewhere.

well people around here get quite buthurt over people who are not devs but are running dev software

Kind of funny to be honest

also people around here hate software pirates,

I dont seey why they should be hated.

The rules of this site are very clear on piracy.

Yeah you guys are sticking to them , The pirates that are here never said where they got it, its a public fourm and people are asking for help and you people who think pirating is so wrong just flame them

I see, why get mad at people., its going to happen anyways

As a full-time, gainfully employed (thank the Gods) Dev I understand that the pre-release software is not finished, may have bugs, may not support certain hardware. It is released so *I* can test *my* software and see if it breaks or needs updates so that it doesn't blow up for the users.

It is not meant for day-to-day activities. Thus if someone gets a pre-release Mac OS X build from *somewhere* and they lose their iTunes library, tough beans. They went out of their way to get something not intended for them, and ended up losing some data because of it. Too bad.

Actually, I find MR one of the most friendly sites, even in the more heated discussions in the Current Events sub forum.

There are MANY sites that have just a horrible community and this is not one of them; for me MR and CAG have the best crop of people even w/ so many members.

People might not care the opinion of a newbie for many things, you need to level up and make people see that you know what you are talking about. We see MANY new newbies everyday. :apple:

I probably talk too much...I try to help people out here, and due to my health, I do have a fair bit of time on my hands....MR is my second home..:D

ok, next time, i will invite you to reply me if i start a thread :D:D:D

joking aside, i feel the same as OP sometimes. but people are 'generally' good natured and nice and helpful. most of my unanswered thread are probably because i was ineffective in finding the info somewhere in the forum :(

maybe you are right...but u see...therein lies the issue..as a newbie (i still am!) its a great site but i sometime hesitate to ask help.
in fact, i delayed moving to mac because i was a bit too afraid to jump and i mistakenly thought this forum is not very welcoming to noobs. i now spend a lot of time here every single day but dont post much (and usually dont get much replies to my dumb threads :D:D:D).

but i do recognise its a unique forum and it rocks :D:D:D:D
