All the screen on the macbook are quite poor. I have brought and sold a few since October. I found the best screen to be the LG model. The samsung panel was the worst it was just milky and even after calibration was poor. The AUO was good, they are all great as long as you are in front. As I travel I tend to not move much when watching films and it is great for that. Except if the film is dark. Then it is quite difficult to watch. I struggled when sharing my macbooks with others.

How can I get one with the LG screen?

I had a MacBook Pro. I swapped it with a MacBook, and a day later I returned the MacBook for a MacBook Pro again.

The screen sucks - viewing straight on, the blacks at the top are fine but at the bottom they are all greyish and look terrible. Even moving your head a 'cm or two results in colour variation.

The screen is really washed out, and anyone who is looking at the high-end MacBook I'd urge to chuck the extra bob to get the low-end MacBook Pro. The screen is just in a different league.

Yeah, when watching a film it is always too grey or too black at the top depending on the angle. There is always like a grey gradient over the screen over blacks. It's SO annoying. I'd pay an extra £300 for a decent screen. They should offer a higher quality screen MacBook.

How annoying:mad:

Or a 13" MacBook Pro ;)

Interesting, I never knew you could buy an display model.

Usually, if you say, "that's the only one I want." They would rather just sell it to you and take out another one for display rather than lose a customer.

Also, and I really had no evidence of this, I would think they hand pick the ones they display in stores, so the display models likely have better screens anyway.

Would the store model cost the same?

This is a no brainer. The screen in the macbook is horrible. It was the main reason I went from MB - MBA. I was quite disappointed and sad that Apple couldn't have used a better vendor for their screen.

Sony Vaio anyone? Now that's a screen.

The Sony Vaio Z has the most gorgeous 13 inch screen I've ever seen, even better than my Air. But at the risk of sounding completely hypocritical, I think the Sony Vaio is overpriced. The design is also dated in comparison to the unibody machines. A few years ago it would have been cutting edge looks, but now it's just the same old Vaio design they repeat every year.

I am completely bemused by this thread. I have a new unibody MB 2.4 and could not be happier with the machine and in particular the screen. I work extensively on presentations, light photoshop work etc. and watch movies without any issues or complaints from myself. I'm a very happy, satisfied customer. Sorry.

I do not believe this statement could be said with the default Apple calibration settings.
Did you calibrate the screen?

I guess if the MacBook screen is calibrated well, it will be fine other than the viewing angle.

Nope - it has a washed out gradient. I'm not complaining about the viewing angles - it is the fact that viewing dead on, there is a huge difference between the blacks at the top and the blacks at the bottom. My Dock looked so washed out on my MacBook compared to my MacBook Pro.

So every screen by those three different brands of screen manufacturers are specifically made with this gradient?

I guess companies these days make everything the same...

I have the LG screen on my unibody Macbook. I've calibrated it to the best of my ability. It still doesn't compare at all to the screen in my Air. These screens are in two completely different leagues in terms of quality.

All the MacBook's in the Apple Store looked similar.. there might be a better screen that you're lucky to get when you buy your MacBook. I don't know what screen I had.

But besides, the Pro's screen is better..
