I refused to pay the $20 app upgrade because that was a stupid price for no real upgrade. Besides, I don't really use those 4 or 5 apps. The Weather app defaults "Minneapolis" to a town of 2000 in Kansas. Minneapolis, MN is the 13th or so largest metro area in the country with 1.5 million people, Apple's never heard of us??!!

Sorry, digressing.

If 2.0 is a real OS upgrade, then it is worth them charging something. And $10 is a much better price for this kind of product (meaning the Touch, not its OS specifically). I'll have the same view of 3rd party apps. Breaking the $10 barrier better be a seriously awesome app or it won't be worth it. $5 would be a better price point for most things, IMO.

Oh, I didn't know bittorrent has a user name and password. I have been utorrent for a while and haven't noticed that either. I guess they'll include a user name and pass if they want to share. Thanks for the info.

That's not what I mean. When you buy the update, Apple attaches your email and iTunes account to that download so that only the person that bought that update is allowed to install it on an iPod touch that is authorized with that account.

So, it would be stupid for someone to give away the update because their name and email would be all over it... Also, they'd have to give you their iTunes account password.

You'd have to be dumb to do that.

Also, the iPhone version is free, but you can't install the iPhone version on an iPod touch because its incompatible.

I can't wait to watch all the losers try to use pwnage to install the iPhone 2.0 on an iPod and brick it... Hahahahaha!

it sucks for early adopters because they have to pay for the firmware each time it comes out.

i think them charging for the update is somewhat annoying because i will now have spend $30 extra on my iPod Touch than people who buy it brand new...

btw do you know what is more annoying than people calling the iPod Touch an iTouch???? people who take good threads and turn them into crap by going off topic in a 5+ post debate. People can call it what ever they want. it doesnt matter what other people want to call it as long as you know your calling it by the correct name everything's okay, if people want to sound like buffoons let them do it. just remember every time you see someone say iTouch laugh to your self at how stupid that person looks.

An incredible amount of whining here

Lets face it Apple is charging for this update just like they charge for every major update to Mac OS/X. Considering what you got in an iPod Touch is an hand held computer this ought to not surprise anybody. Now if you look at Touch like it is a simple media player I might see where some of the frustration is but then why worry about an upgrade at all?

Overall charging for the update should be seen as a positive sign that the platforms capabilities will continue to grow. To me this means much more interesting iPod and Iphone devices in the future. Remember this is an update to generation one devices and a launch platform for iPhone2. The more they improve this distribution the more capable follow on generations will be.

If one has concerns here just take a look at how far Apple has come with OS/X on the Mac. Every major upgrade was a significant improvement over the previous. Sure there may be a regression or two but each new version of OS/X has gotten faster and offered up improved performance. Not to forget new software technologies that are just making their way into the software base. It is a good deal for the majority of users and more improvements are coming in future updates either to the OS as a whole or to the supplied apps like SAFARI.

You may well say that SAFARI is free. True but Apple has to pay for the programming effort made to improve the code base. That is not an insignificant effort as can be seen in the various WebKit forums. In a round about way your $10 upgrade goes in part to support open software. Very good open source software at that.

Oh come on now cry me a river. Next thing you will be complaining about is that the price of the Touch will drop in September due to the falling Flash prices. Like that wasn't something that obviously wouldn't of happened. You might see peopel buying an iPod Touch for half of what you paid for it, how will that make you feel?

It is not that I have any idea what Apple will do with the next updates, just that the price and feature set of the Touch is now a bit out of sync with the iPhone and hardware prices are dropping on more than just the Flash memory in the device.

A charge for an OS update to a hand held computer is just as reasonable as charging for one to a desktop machine.

Hey now people have the right to call the thing anything they want. They paid for it and if they want to call the Touch Nina live and let live.

I'd rather laugh at you and your whining!!!!!! Not to offend but just to cause you to pause and think about your post.

I was super pissed when I found out 2.0 would have the JSU included, I already paid, $20 in January, shouldn't people who bought the JSU be able to get 2.0 for a cheaper price? I think $10 is ok, I expected it to be more, but I am still not happy about the price.

You got use out of it for almost six months.

When I upgraded a computer from Panther to Leopard, I got features from Tiger without having bought it. This is essentially the same thing.

I see, it seemed like a good time to buy it, and it came with five apps but it sucks, I could have waited six months if I knew

This topic brings up an interesting point. Since the iPhone is no longer revenue sharing on Apple's part (as for the 3G anyways), will they start charing iPhone owners going forward?

I hope not, but I am not familiar with the law that requires Apple to charge for updates.

This is not a law. It is simply the accounting model that Apple uses.

XP to Vista you get many features
Tiger to leopard you get 300 new features
OS1 to OS 2.0 should be free and apple should not nickel and dime us
for 3 new feature upgrade
IT SHOULD BE FREE

no it shouldn't be free, ipod's bring apple a one time revenue per purchase. Yes they offer the update for free to iPhone users but they pay a monthly fee (apple must get a cut of the monthly fee or something maybe?)

I definately agree with some other people when I say that because a iPod Touch is a one of payment, they should receive some sort of fee for a major upgrade. Anyways, think how many hours of joy its brought you!

I am in agreement as I already said for the 2.0 upgrade but for the likes of january update I was totally against as those apps could of been added from the start but they chose to wait and then stiff people with a fee......... thank god I waited for a jailbreak method to get them :D

Apple puts DRM on updates that come from iTunes. Therefore, unless you knew the torrent person's account name and password, you won't be able to install it on your iPhone or iPod touch.

there was no drm in the jailbreak for the january update, so its not entirely true what your saying. the jan apps from installer downloads a file to replace the excisting one on the touch to enable the apps so cant be drm surely?

I'm surprised they want to charge for it, considering how much they could make from the App Store - using it as some kind of long term subsidised plan thingymajig.

Hoping that Firmware 2 will include the Jan apps too.

Given the choice to agree or disagree, I tend to disagree. It's more fun. ;)

However, if you want me to agree, I do take credit cards. ;)

For nuetral, cash. Nuetrality isn't cheap. Opinions are a dime a dozen though. ;)

When I bought my iPod touch I paid for what was in the box. I also don't mind paying for major updates from Apple because they are usually worth the price. We're not talking about a simple "bug/security patch" here.

Anyway I'd rather pay 10$/year to get upgrades then pay the insane monthly fees that the cellphone companies are asking for. Canadian iPhone? Sure... iPod touch + your current cellphone + duct tape. :p
