I've check my phone at a red light from time to time, but I'm not habitual about it. I'm not one to respond though. Living in the city and driving in bumper to bumper traffic nothing is more frustrating than green lights and stopped drivers. If something is so important, I'd expect a phone call. If I'm driving and something is vital to communicate, I'll either pull over or make a phone call (My car has bluetooth).

2 hints for those who cannot wait to read/respond to text messages
1) Siri can read and transcribe messages
2) Hold your phone at the top of your steering wheel so you can see the light when it turns green
(Hiding in your lap is just as obvious as holding in where everyone can see you :p)

Frequently—but just to check traffic conditions. There are some careless drivers out there. ;)

Women have been checking their makeup at red lights for decades and we had to just take it. Payback time, baby!

Well, the old 'Mars and Venus' nonsense, which, of course, needless to say, I do not subscribe to myself, attempts to argue that women can multi task…..whereas men, alas, tend to have minds that are compelled to run on one tram track at a a time.

More relevantly, why are such individuals inconveniencing others and slowing traffic?

Again, not a big deal man. Just chill.

If I didn't relax every time I saw somebody driving slower, dumber, and just all around bad compared to me I'd have a stroke. It's just not a big deal. They have just as much right to drive however they want as you do, even if it means some grandma driving slow.

Honestly the whole "everybody should drive to not impede me" thing is quite selfish.

What's selfish is the imposition of cellphone checking users at lights slowing others down. That's orthogonal to how people drive regularly as they're not breaking the Highway Code.

I'm an enthusiast, love to drive. Prefer to return home without crashing due to distracted driving.

If I absolutely must use the phone I pull over and park...simple :D

Funny, I remember back in 1993 when my family lived in St. John's Newfoundland (we were brought up in BC but moved around a bit in the late 80s early 90s). I was on the way to Carleton University in Ottawa to do my Master's and my sis to Ryerson in Toronto. So my folks decided to make a family holiday of it and loaded up our van with our stuff and drove to Toronto and Ottawa. As my Dad was the head of a Dockyard at the time he got to take a MOBILE PHONE with him to keep in touch with what was going on. He would sometimes stop by the side of the road to call when we were at some playce for lunch or a coffee break or whatever. He would use the motel phone with his work credit card otherwise. Was a big Motorola thing IIRC.

Unfortunately, the fact that it is illegal (as it should be) does not always prevent complete cretins examining their phones while stalled, or stopped, at traffic lights.

Last time I went to the states, the amount of people checking their phones and texting whilst driving was insane..... I don't think it had been made illegal then though.

That's about the only time I put my phone down because I need both hands plus a good focus to get a speedy getaway as soon as the light turns green.

#F1 fan.

"How dare you inconvenience me my time is much more valuable than yours"

Is all you're saying. For instance, me taking a look at a message somebody sends me is vastly more important than anything you do.

Which might stand up if the felon only impacted one driver behind them but they don't, do they? It's the ripple effect. It's not a case of me V them which is where you've tried to target this discussion, it's applying the proper rules of the road, so playing with your cell phone when you should be driving with proper due care and attention means the felon is in the wrong.

im proud to be a regular crime-committing felon. You better watch it. I might go check my phone at your house next.
