I don't dunk anything, (not even biscotti) but a Dutch colleague once brought me back some Dutch waffles from leave;- these were "stroopwafel", a Dutch specialty, he assured me, which takes the form of a double layer of waffle with a caramel syrup filling in the middle.

This is supposed to be dunked into coffee, - we did it together, I following his instructions, - having been softened by being placed on top of the steaming coffee mug; I tried it, but didn't much care for it - it seems that I prefer to consume Dutch waffles without having dunked them.

How polite! Many many years ago my former wife and I were eating dim sum in Chicago with another couple (who are Chinese and have since naturalized).

I was a chop stick rookie back then so I’d dip my sticks in my water glass to moisten them...it helps control them. The gentleman (guest) was just about to eat when he noticed me dunking my sticks. He paused a moment then dunked his sticks too. Lol, he thought it was some type of American custom.

What a charming story.

My Dutch colleague - who had gone out of his way to obtain some seriously good "stroopwafel" (not standard shop bought, or store bought), was a little disappointed that I didn't really care for dunked waffles, although I was impressed by the way these waffles softened (ready to be dunked) when placed on the rim of the steaming mug of coffee.

I've had store bought and ones made fresh in Europe. Gets a massive "whatever" from me. I've tried fresh speculaas cookies, albeit broken chunks from a large wooden mold overseas, too. Doesn't tickle my fancy, to be honest. I gravitate towards less spice and sweetness, and more bitter or tamer flavors when it comes to desserts.
