I really like my iPhone 4, with just two exceptions. The crummy phone & the tiny screen. My other phone is an EVO. I've learned how great it is to have a larger screen and a phone that fits a mans hands. I hope that my next phone is an iPhone with a minimum of a 4" display. If not then Android it is.

What is the resolution of your EVO ? A bigger screen is useless if it displays less pixels than the IP4 small screen.

A bigger screen is quite handy. It's easier to see from a normal distance, easier for us old guys, and it's easier to show images / videos to others around you.

What's useless would be a smaller screen. What good is a zillion PPI if the screen was say, only 1"? :)

I only really notice it after spending a long time on the ipad, and picking the phone up soon afterwards. Then it just feels like a child's dinky toy. :)

But the subject of this thread is web browsing, what matters is the quantity of information you can read before having to scroll.

Okay, fair enough.

Although I'd still say that the screen's physical size affects the ability to read that certain quantity of information. A high PPI screen is useless if I have to stick it right up to my eyes to see the details. In other words, a larger screen even with the same PPI can be handy.

As an aside, the scrolling argument also applies for the way that non-Apple browsers wrap text when you zoom in. I really dislike having to scroll sideways to read an article with Safari.

Cheers!

Wow......I wonder what the crackberry users think about this:D

I'm ready to abandon my Blackberry for an andriod or an iPhone (if/when it comes to Verizon) for just this reason. The BBOS simply hasn't kept up. having reliable access to email was great 5 years ago. Times have changed and that's simply not enough anymore. I want to be able to reliably surf when I need it.

all the time! wished it had a bigger screen... i love to surf in bed or lying on the couch... perfect if it was twice as big with the Retina Display but not as heavy as the iPad. sigh.

Irritated? No. Disappointed that Apple didn't at least go 3.8" while there were redesigning the whole damn phone?

about 10 times a day.

No, I don't. However, I don't browse the web a lot on my iPhone.

Exactly, I do "light" browsing or searching on it, but if I really want to look at a site I'll do it on my computer or wait until I get home. It's not meant to be a replacement people...

If the web content is 'justified' to the same width as the screen, it's a great browsing experience. You're not constantly flicking back and forth and zooming in and out to read long sentences; you're just scrolling up and down.

When viewing normal 'wide' pages designed with PCs/Macs in mind, it can be a tedious experience. Still far better than nothing at all though! ;)

You must not have used a device with a 3.1" screen.

I actually preferred web browsing on my 3.1" Pre. The way apple forces the bottom bar to be there all the time is really damn annoying.

*Yes I know the pictures make the iPhone screen look huge in comparison but its just the file size, not actual screen size comparison.

all that said, I still browse on my iPhone all the time and really dont mind it too much, although most of the sites I use on it are mobile sites.

OT, but that's why I love my Sony PSP (1000 model). Yeah, I know the WiFi browsing is crap compared to now. But with a screen at 4.3 inches, I can almost fit the entire iPhone (4.5 inches height) on there. We now have phones trying to match it. Sony was very forward thinking with it and it doesn't give me eye or hand strain as much as my GBA SP and DS Lite when I had them. PSP2 will likely be a Day 1 purchase for me now over the 3DS because I'm starting to prefer digital distribution because I like to have all my games in one card instead of carrying physical media around. 3DS will just give me eye strain once the gimmick starts to wear off. I will still get it when the price drops. I still prefer versatility in my handhelds. Buying a Genesis Collection game and PS1 classics just made my trusty, 5 1/2 year old PSP into a Genesis/Nomad/PlayStation 1 portable. And they don't run like crap like most ROMS. Reliving some of my middle school/high school years again!

Funny how the trends can be. We went from wanting to making our phones smaller and thinner to not minding big, beastier phones as long as it has a bigger screen. It reminds me of the 1990's and early 2000's. We went from parachute/baggy pants to wearing tight jeans. I'm content with iPhone 4's screen, but my next phone will likely be a minimum of a 4 inch screen as well whether it is an iPhone or not. I just turned 30, but once we get to out 40's, we need those bigger screens because our vision will get noticeably worse when we read. My parents had perfect 20/20 vision back in the day and started to use reading glasses when they reached their 40's. That's why my mom bought an Amazon Kindle 3 last month. Good price and screen size. Take care of your eyes, folks. It may not seem like a big deal now, but wait for your mid-life. My stepdad got laser eye surgery back in the day, but 10 years later at the age of 52, still needs reading glasses. That's why he got an iPhone in the first place back in 2008. Bigger screen to help him see at night. Now he carries a Droid X and Galaxy tablet.

This year, I am more into thinking of getting an internet tablet myself. Motorola Xoom or BlackBerry Playbook intrigue me the most. Glad I didn't get an iPad. While I think it is a fantastic product with awesome battery life and is noticeably faster than my iP4, I just feel it would be too redundant to have that and an iPhone 4.

Don't 3rd party browsers eliminate this annoyance making it a moot point?

Yes! Some of these excuses are hilarious.

Last week, I tried out an HTC HD7 (windows 7 phone). It had a 4.3" screen and reading and browsing were fantastic.

Yes, the retina display is great. However, a larger screen is desired. Also, I have great eyesight (especially for reading small print), but 3.5" is on the small side; not only for eyesight, but the iphone is too small for my hands.

A little OT, but yes, that's precisely why I never use my iPad anymore. Way too redundant. The iPhone is always with me so it gets way more use. For everything else, the MBA fits the bill.

Anyway, back on topic, I do get irritated at times with the small iPhone screen ... but compared to what? 4"+? That's still small for browsing the web. I don't pretend to use this thing as my primary web browser so I can put up with the minor annoyances every now and then. It's still a great device and extremely handy to have on the go.

IF i browse the web on the go, most of the time, it's pages that are optimized for mobile devices. (like most blogs, newspapers, etc. etc.)

in those rare cases that i need to look up something on a webpage that doesn't have a mobile version, i really don't care that much

how do you click those links in the bottom right&left corners if you're at the bottom of a page? My Nokia N8 has the same 'full screen' browser and its nice, but can be a pain with the floating icons covering links I can't get to

I feel people are forgetting that its a PHONE, its not a computer. I search the web on it if i need the answer for something quick. If i really need to research something i would use my ipad or computer.
