The only person in the conversation who would receive a green bubble is the iPhone user. The person on Android could see the message in a variety of colors on a variety of messaging apps.

As far as social stigma, I have never looked down on someone because of something as trivial as the color of a text message bubble on a specific device. I try not to associate myself with the personality types who would because they would be insufferable in a variety of situations.

There can be an argument made for missing the functionality of iMessage which is valid. However, I'm finding that more and more of my friends are now using Facebook Messenger and we all own iPhones. Like iMessage, that app has a huge installed base, so you don't usually have to bug your friends to download a special app and it transfers video and pics in a good quality.

I don't care how other people see messages. Where I live most people don't even use iMessages. They use whatsapp.

I recently went back to Android after being sandboxed by iOS for the past 3 years . iMessages was the least of my concern when switching.

Theee are third party apps like whatsapp and hangouts that solve that issue. In fact you'll find third party apps are more functional than iMessages.

WhatsApp and the others all compress. If you can find one that doesn’t compress videos/photos please let me know. I’ve tried tons of them, including the popular ones.

My family has all iPhones, and so I can send them a message from my Mac. When I was on android, I lost that ability, I had to text them from my phone. Today, I can use my iMac, my MBP, or my iPad to respond to their messages. With an android phone, I'll only be able to use my phone.

Last time I checked, there were a couple of 3rd party options on Android to achieve this and those existed well before Apple even got iMessages sending from Mac (I use to jailbreak iOS for this). None of the Android solutions looked as nice as Apple's Messages, but at least one of them was web-based so it wasn't exclusive to Apple devices. I do wish I could use Apple Messages from my Chromebook (a web app version of it would be nice), but I don't think Apple will do that as they give up their lock-in.

It appears recently carriers may be enabling this themselves, e.g. AT&T's NumberSync. I haven't looked into this, so not sure how well it works out.

Apple may have the better user experience, but that assumes you're only using Apple devices. Android may have the advantage here if a slick enough solution existed. Going with Apple has the disadvantage because mixing up SMS and iMessages means you always to have an Apple device to properly deal with text messages even if you have carrier-level number sharing.

My biggest issue with Android and iOS messaging was there is a huge delay in receipt when you're not using the same message platform.

The different colored bubbles never bothered me or the few people I texted, they just wondered why aren't you responding as quickly as you used to?

Thankfully, I rarely text anyway so it's not an issue. What keeps me on iOS is something else entirely.

Not get green bubbled, but get left out.

Android is still a pain in the arse.

Last week we all took a trip to my camp site up in Maine. We have a massive group chat with about 14 people in it. We went water rafting, paintballing, 4 wheeling, ate lots of greasy unhealthy foods, laid out in my deck watching the stars . Man We had a good ol’ time.

13 came except one. Guess what phone he was using ? Yup. A brand new “ FlagShip “ Galaxy S8.

He got none of the messages and had no idea we where even planning it out.

We did some research ( because he was not only offended and very concerned )

Since he went from a 7+ to an android device ( turned off his iMessage’s and everything ) he stopped receiving messages on group chats he was in while on the Apple boat.

So becuae of this, he received none of them going forward. What had to happen was.

All of us DELETE a group chat that is a little over 2 years old full of laughs, links, hysterical roasts of each other, screen shots, pictures of foods, recipe’s etc all because 1 person decided to upgrade to an android device. This is unethical and wrong.

So, he is now very much so enjoying his brand new iPhone 8 Plus after giving back his Galaxy S8 Plus that for some reason had a broken screen and damaged corners lol

No one is afraid of a green bubble. But afraid of getting left out or worse, someone think you’re ignorming them.

iMessage is brilliant and comes installed right out of the box.

No need for useless 3rd party apps, creating usernames that you’ll forget and other nonsense.

You highlight a very real problem for those of us who are on group chats in iMessage and decide to go to Android. However, I’m confused as to what you think is unethical and wrong. Is it the fact that Apple makes it almost impossible for people to gracefully switch operating systems and still have group texting work? Or are you referring to your friend’s need for all of his friends to delete the group thread and start anew so he could remain a part of the discussion despite his decision to try an Android device?

Absolutely not. In fact, even though I'm currently using an iPhone I would appear as a green bubble as I have iMessage disabled. However, someone noticing that is a rare occurrence as almost everyone around here uses WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. Because of that, I just keep iMessage disabled to avoid my number getting trapped there once I swap my SIM into an Android phone again.

I am a big fan of iOS and iMessage. But, to be fair, this case has nothing to do with “Android being a pain in the arse”. It’s simply just Apple not allowing iMessages to be used in Android.

For this reason, WhatsApp is a more versatile platform for group messages, as it allows both Apple and Android users. WhatsApp is tied to your cell number; no user name or password is needed.

The question is: why should iphone users use whatsapp when apple got imessage? Imo, i think people are more in tuned with imessage since that is what lot of users are introduced with.

not as imessage i only use to text mum and sister

what i would miss is the notifications on twitter and how they come through. yes something as simple as that.

Not at all and I thing fearing that is silly.

iMessage does however factor heavily into my decision on if I want to switch to Android or not though. I could care less about the color of my chat bubble but all the features it brings are hard to leave behind. I have told almost all my relatives to go with iPhones at this point though, obviously it will be different for others.

I don't fear the green bubble because it's green...I fear the green bubble because of what it represents.

Several years ago I bought and used a Galaxy Note 3 for about 6 months and among many, many other steps backwards, messaging was the biggest.

And allows you to chat with only 30-40% of people you know. I know this is regional, but with lots of good cross-platform messaging apps available, iMessage has been in the ”why would I bother with an iPhone only solution and exclude lots of my friends?” category over here for quite a while now.

As mentioned already, e.g. WhatsApp is tied to your phone number. Takes a minute to set up and you can message pretty much anyone. But once again, this depends on where you live.

If anyone judged / looked down on me for being a "green bubble" I would stop messaging and de-friend that person in real life, so I really don't care. That's just pathetic. I hate that Apple disables "send as SMS" by default in iOS. It creates so much confusion for people who don't realize they need to turn this on in order to receive all text messages.

For those of us in the US and Canada, which is where most of the iMessage lockin comes from, it allows us to chat with 100% of the people we know actually since it does SMS fallback

What Twitter notifications do you mean?
coming through with unlimited notifications. They can come through for days and days. Which is ideal for me as an NBA fan in england I can see the main tweets. On android? there is a limit of 50 tweets before it stops coming through.

I also like how notifications can come through at the top so i don't need to keep going through the notifications list when i'm using the phone

This is like the first time I have ever seen someone say that they want to be spammed with MORE notifications ;)

Goes to show how differently we all use our devices

SMS/MMS fallback is available here as well, but it’s not a solution you want to use for group conversations and sending pictures.

I use WhatsApp for my family on the Dominican Republic. It’s a brilliant app for this feature. However, being stateside ? Not so much.

My friends/family I have here don’t have a need for it.

Having them install an application to do the same thing we do in the messages app because 1 person has a different device is kinda lame.

Well had. He uhh.. accidentally dropped it and is back home.

If it's important tweets then it's a good thing. Certainly when football is on i can keep up to date with all the scores by my twitter notifications alone. No need to go into apps and i do like how notifications just wake the screen up. Better for my needs.

this is not the only reason to stick with apple but one of them. How it works with all my devices is great and the apple watch for me is awesome and one apple product i couldn't not use on a daily basics.

I 100% perceive green bubble texts as being less worthy of my attention than blue ones.

Why? Because the blue texts are coming from an actual phone, with a real phone #, and a real phone account. Green texts can be all sorts of robots, google voice, VoIP lines, etc.. Basically, there's a much larger potential the the green bubbles aren't coming from a human.

On Craigslist, when I sell on there, green bubbles are often the scammers from India with a Google Voice account.

SMS/MMS fallback is available here as well, but it’s not a solution you want to use for group conversations and sending pictures.

I'm aware, just pointing out that it's not chatting with 40% of people I know it's chatting with everyone with a couple having to use SMS
