It is a worthy purchase for those who do not need the bells and whistles. I've been considering getting my folks one -- the lowest model (wifi/16gb), just for doodling around with.

You don't pay tax when you buy it used on CL as I mentioned.

Why would you buy something "like new" for 350, when you can walk into the apple store and get an actual new one (refurb) with a full warranty for ~10 more?

With the price so low on a refurb, i can see you either getting a much better model for 350 (3g or 64gb), or a 16gb for 300

it's not worth it for only $100 price difference.

But I was able to get one for $359 from microcenter last night. with tax was $389. new one would be $541 with tax so difference of $152 was worth it to me. Plus, it's not like you can easily go pick up an iPad 3 right now or even near launch day so that adds some benefit to getting an iPad 2 also if you don't need the latest and greatest.

When people throw around money they have to take percentage into consideration. Like you said, you would have paid ~50% more to get an ipad 3. That is considerable. Even with the $100 difference it is still a +20% difference. Again, that is pretty considerable. Considerable enough that if something someone wanted was 20% off they would sprint to the store to obtain it.

Now $100 difference on a $2000 product, ehh not so much. But with $500, I could certainly see the argument that it is worth it. Especially if you don't NEED a retina display and faster processor.

my $.02

Anyone with an iPad 2 should keep it safe and sound... it will always be the highest tiered iPad from this point on!

exactly, you would be buying from a trusted source which is definitely worth it. haha

in store pickup only. AND only 1 per household is all they will sell. otherwise i would have bought 1 for my mom and my wife.

Didn't know that. Pretty sure I would have spent that much in gas to get to a store. Why is it they are able to sell it for less than everyone else? I didn't think apple allowed that.

they always have some promo going on with apple gear. Places like amazon and macmall do the same things on laptops and desktops too. not much of a discount but it's something. they usually have a 1 per household limit so i guess apple is OK with that?

i don't know how they do it though. bc for the longest time they had the $1,199 macbook pro 13inch for only $999 brand new.

I wouldn't buy the iPad 2 at this point, but I know many will. I like that Apple is keeping the iPad 2 around, in order to cut into the Android sales. :)

Exactly my thinking. I bought one for my mom as a living room companion. It only cost $370.81 shipped from the Apple refurb store. I think I'll use the savings and get her an AppleTV as well.

The iPad 2 is great for the price. If that is what your budget is, get it. Those telling the op to save and get the iPad 3, that's like saying don't get the kindle fire and save to get an iPad. They are set at different price points for different customers

To me the iPad 2 is still worth it. My friend wanted the 3, so he’s selling me his 2 for a pretty good price. I have a hi-res MPB so I don’t NEED a hi-res iPad, just wanted something more portable to surf the internet, check emails, etc… To me the 3 is just like a 4s, its nice to have the new features, but I don’t really NEED them for what I use my devices for. I only plan to use it with wi-fi, don’t need a hi-res screen (although would be nice), don’t need the a5x chip, so the 2 fits my needs perfectly! I guess it all comes down to the question, “What will you use this for?”

Yeah this is what I've been trying to evaluate. Honestly this will mostly be a couch device. Rather than getting up to log online and check emails and surf the net, I'll use this for that. Also reading books and Netflix in bed might be a nice option which leads me to another concern: Will the Netflix app be better on the new one since you'll be able to view videos in true HD? Seems it would to me.

But beyond this, I'm not sure I'd really be able to appreciate the screen in other ways since I don't do anything art-related or anything I can think of that requires a higher ppi. Also not a gamer with touch devices.

Yeah, I would agree. If you really don't want to put up the money for a 3rd gen iPad, that's understandable, but don't buy a new iPad 2. Buy a refurb and save some more money.

I totally agree here, and just like you for me the 2 will be a "couch device" as well. I dont do graphics or game either so i probably wont benefit from the new processor's full potential. I've played around with my sister's 2 and its more than fast enough for my intended purposes.

You might benefit from the 3's resolution for Netflix, but if i'm at home id rather play movies on my TV via xbox or watch on my laptop. Just some food for thought.

iPad 2 is obsolete considering the $100 price difference with the new iPad 3.

But for <$300 the iPad 2 is great value.

the current market for used ipad 2s says otherwise. they are selling from anywhere between 300-360 right now, which means any where in that price range is still a great value.

iPad 2 is a disgusting device now when you compare it to the new iPad. Millions of them will end up in landfills in the next several months.

Only $100 less expensive? No way, it would be a closr call if the iPad 2 was like $199 at most, everything higher than this you'll have to go Retina 100%.

The changes in the new iPad aren't enough to persuade me to upgrade from my iPad 2 but if I was looking at getting my first iPad I would definitely get the new one over the iPad 2
If you get an iPad 2 it will most likely be ok for the next 12 months, but when the next iPad comes out next year it will be 2 generations behind. Get the new one now and it will provide solid service for at least 2 years

No. I have an ipad1& 2. Upgrade from 1 but not a big deal from 2. Screen is great but that's it. I had 32gb on all 3 and it was more than sufficient on the first 2 but not on 3. Caution, go bigger if you are thinking of buying a 3. I had wifi only on last 2 and used a vzw myfi. Now I have lte & will cxl the myfi. That's a benefit for me. Otherwise the screen is great but noticeably less bright at std setting than 1 & 2. I had to manually increase brightness to get it to same level as prior models.

So, I would call this evolutionary not revolutionary.. A 2.5 not a 3. Maybe that's why apple didn't call it iPad 3.

The new iPad screen is sharper - it makes books magazines and web pages easier to read. If that's not your major use for the iPad, then the iPad 2 is lighter cheaper and has a slightly better battery life (I have both right now). The lack of a faster CPU pretty much guarantees that there will be a 'better' iPad next year with a 28nm quad core a15 based CPU that feels much faster and is still thinner and lighter and more long lasting than this one.

Welcome to the world of iDevices and their planned annual obsolescence!

On the second hand market, yes. You'll get so many desperate folk who caught up in the hype of a new device will be accepting lower then normal prices for their iPad 2s.

But new? Not sure, I think the bump in specs is worth the price difference tbh.
