I had a glossy screen C2D 17inch and found it impossible to use on movie sets with all the bright lights.

Luckily I got it swopped for another unit with a matte screen.

dude, i use glossy screens both on my home pc and my laptop. they are fine. no problem what so ever. the color is richer and surface is smoother than non glossy ones at my work. I've been using glossy screens for at least 2 years. They are my preference. I think people who don't like them are freaks. but to each thier own.

I love my glossy screen. I have 3 17" MBP's now. My 1st one was glossy, then I let the message board opinions sway me into buying one that was matte......boring!

I am a photographer and am always working in great light, so it is perfect for what I use a Mac for.....photos......video......etc.

Iv'e had them both.....glossy was my choice to go back to!

Interesting that you would choose glossy as a photographer. Not due to the reflections but the colour representation.

Glossy yes, Glassy no.

I did have a unibody 15" MBP for about a week, initially i loved the screen when i used it at home, but once i took it into the office it annoyed the crap out of me. It just did not play nice with a light source above/behind you.

For me it is not a glossy v matte issue, its a Glass issues. As someone has raised, its not glossy, its glassy. I also have a MBA, that has a glossy screen, and i do not mind it at all. In fact I prefer it to my 17" matte, but its the glassy I could not stand.

Go into an apple store and have a look at a MBA (Glossy), 17" Glassy and a 17" Matte. This will give you a good idea of the differences. I suspect that you will be shocked by how nice the MBA screen is, and that is glossy. Also if possible turn off each one and look at the screen with the unit shut down, this really shows you how reflective the glassy is.

Though in the end, its personal choice. The good thing about apple is you have 14 days to decide, heck give it a test run. If its not for you, return it.

The glare off the glossy screen burns your eyes out and after a while you're not bothered any more. You just don't see it. And you don't see anything else ;-)

'a little bit glossy' is not too bad. It's the damn super-glossy covered with glass screen (zillion times more reflective!) that Apple uses. It's good if your office mates plan to back-stab you and you need to see what's behind you at all times; can't say it's good for anything else though...

I didn't think I'd like it, but when I went to the apple store and saw the images, being displayed, my fears/concerns were allayed. I'm extremely happy with my MBP, including the display.

I actually like the screen very much. Before owning my current MBP I was very much against glossy screens. Now that I have one I actually like it a lot. Once calibrated the new screen matches photos that were post-processed using a matte screen. That was my main concern but now I know this isn't an issue for me.

Don't reward them for forcing glossy on you. If you want matte send them feedback and tell them you're not buying until they offer it again. You shouldn't have to "get used to" anything for the prices they ask. If they're not offering it when I replace my 15" matte mbp I'll be completely happy going back to Windows now that 7 is upon us. Screw Apple and their "we'll tell you what you want" mentality, and this is from someone with a Mini, MBP, and Mac Pro 2.8 octo. They should have returned matte as an option on this latest round of refreshes...

I've been a Mac user for 23 years and couldn't agree more with Jim's opinion.

I have a Collector's Edition 13" MacBook with the glassy screen. It's fine for client presentations. But when I need to do any work on it, I use an external 20" matte display (which was far less expensive than buying a 17" matte MBP).

Hate glassy and glossy, prefer matte always.

Please Apple, give us a choice!
