And here she is... the love of my Dad's life...

Doesn't she look like she's a handful?!?

Woof, Woof - Dawg

Speaking as an Australian, Dawg, this is fascinating. There is so much history in the letters and clippings that you are posting, that make much of the Australian war times seem like a boring tale pushed to one side. You seem to have one of the most interesting families in America, and I only wish that my family was as interesting, and kept as good at record keeping as yours. I will be following this thread, and intend to post some skeletons when I find them!

I'm rather envious of those who can look up their family histories... since I'm the product of what became a very messy divorce, I truly don't care about large tracts of my ancestry.

Been there done that. Not a lot of fun.

Up until the age of about 12, I think that I was the only one in my class whose parents were divorced.

Edited to thank Dawg for his personal contributions that we're all enjoying.

Mom and Dad both passed away about 18 years ago

Dad worked at Lockheed in Marietta, GA from the time he got out of the service, until 1987 when he died of a heart attack at age 64, 3 months shy of retiring. He wanted to work in his barn and do lapidary work (working with stones, polishing and setting them). He was instrumental in the development of the C5 transport, and took me and my brother to see the inaugural test flight at Dobbins Air Force Base. We buried him on Mother's Day, and I preached his funeral... my first in the ministry. Dad never got the boat and motor he wanted.

Soon after Dad passed, Mom found out she had cancer. After 2 chemo treatments, she stopped them and lived the last few months on her own terms. She died in January, about 8 months after my Dad. She was 58 years young. My brother and I were sleeping on the floor in her room when we woke up at 2:00 a.m. to hear her take her last breath. (It was one of my prayer requests to be there when she passed). I preached her funeral as well, my second. She couldn't bear to live without Dad. She loved to work in the yard with her flowers, but she said it was never the same after Dad left.

Its been a long day digging through all of this stuff... and now I'm depressed.
Think I will call it a night and go to bed. :(

Don't know if I'll post any more or not... sorry.

This pic of your folks is fantastic. Both filled with love and hope for the future.

Thanks for sharing, and think of all the good times that you had with them.

Interesting read Dawg. Thanks for posting.

Makes me wonder about my father... he unfortunately died of cancer when I was 7 or 8 years old. I have a few pictures of him and a journal he started to write before passing away. He was an electrician in the U.S. air force - and generally pretty handy. He welded a bike for my brother - extending the forks that held the front wheel to make a very cool "chopper" bike. He also made us some stilts that we would spend hours on, walking around the yard. :D I don't remember him very well though, and wish I knew more about his life.

As far as skeletons in the closet, my mom's brother did something very bad and I think he's in jail for life.

So, I'm going through several boxes of my parents 'stuff'. They both passed away about 17 years ago. Anyway, I've got all of my Dad's old WWII letters and pictures and things. His dad was in WWI and I've got his items as well.

Good stuff... but while I'm digging, I find newspaper articles from the 1920's that reveal that my great grandmother murdered my great grandfather! She was sentenced to be hanged (which was unheard of for a woman at the time), but in a second trial they sentenced her to life.

She had threatened to kill him, and he tried to divorce her.

From the news articles...

Anyway, she ends up shooting him, and is sentenced to be hanged. Later she is granted "mercy" and is given life.

So, I'm wondering... what's your family's deep dark secret?
Any murderers in your family?
Other skeletons?
What's the dark side of your family?
Who is the black sheep?

So many don't believe it can happen (not to say everyday was a holiday or every meal a feast) and may not even continue to try.

Like JSW, I will try and not clog the thread-be ASSURED there are those following closly and I think you may have one of the original GEEK soaps going here.

THANKYOU!

Alright, I got a little down and weepy last night :(
Discouraged and depressed
But, I've been up since 6:00 going through things again

I found my Dad's dog tags :)
So many didn't make it back from the war

I've found some silverware, cigarette case and stuff
Also I have the medals and pins (I'll take a picture later)

And I have some more pictures if you're interested

I just don't want the mods to get upset with all of these posts
Doctor Q, Mr. Anderson and others, if it gets to be too much, just tell me

OK, getting back to the beginning... my great grandfather who was shot and killed by his wife. I'm not sure that this was my grandfather's mother. It was the 2nd marriage for both of them, and she was 19 years younger than he was! They did have children together, but they both had children separately too. She was first married at age 14... but you can read it in the articles.

It doesn't say anything in the articles about it, but I think the scandal was that he was cheating and she caught him... but back in the day, that wasn't revealed. Kind of like the woman taken in adultery in Bible (John 8). Where was the man she was with??

My great grandfather who was murdered, was a doctor. His son, my grandfather was a dentist.
He may be the doctor mentioned in the hanging article as the Dr. who says that she deserved to hang.
However, he had a brother who was a doctor too. So I'm not sure.

I'll post a link to the hanging article because I made it big enough to read, but too big for the board.

The hanging article is here

My great grandfather was a doctor as you know...
Here is his matriculation card dated 1880-1881
Southern Medical College

I have it for 1881-1882 also

My granddad was a dentist and had a brother who was a doctor
My grandad went to the Atlanta-Southern Dental College
Here is the school's catalog for 1917-1918

Just to refresh your memory... here is my granddad
He served in the Dental Corps during WWI

Quite a handsome fellow don't you think?

He was discharged from the army after WWI, but applied for reinstatement during WWII.
I don't think he was ever called back up (haven't found that out yet).
He wanted to go back in after my Dad enlisted, and his wife died.

Here is his discharge...

Now my great granddad was not the only one who was the victim of violence.
Here is an article where my granddad was stabbed with an ice pick.

This is an interesting article about "violence" and how times have changed.

Now my grandmother's side of the family, my Dad's mom's side, appears to be the respectable side.
No murders, stabbings, hangings...

Here is my grandmother's parents... Hillery and Ada Miller.
My grandmother, the former Viola Miller was apparently a saint ;)
She was also sick most of the time

My dad was named after her dad... William Hillery

uhh...MD, it doesn't seem like the men in your family have much luck with women, do they?

Where is your wife? where is that carving knife? oh no..... :D

And that brings us back to my Dad...
Also known as "Billy Boy" :p

Dad3.jpg

I also found this book that explains the symbols and rankings of the military.
It was printed in 1941.

Now my Dad worked at Lockheed, and here is a picture of that...
I tried to find him in the pic, but no luck.
I think this is the C130, my Dad's project before the C5A

Now at Lockheed, they had a Buckhunters Club for those who found ways to cut costs.
This is a pic of Dad with the Buckhunters (back row, last on the right).
There is also a shot of the Buckhunters Certificate.
Notice that my Dad robbed the dollar bill from the certificate! :p

Ya maybe, but his dad and mom were very tight, that was obvious and good. In fact BV had a sad song thread in music and I almost posted the song "Where've You Been" by Kathy Mattea - his mom and dad remind me of that song. Obviously alot of good smarts in the genes too, so many Dr's.

OK now, don't forget about my Mom, the love of my Dad's life!
He rescued her from poverty... dirt poor and she loved him.

Her Dad died soon after she married my Dad.
He had a brain tumor, bad stuff at the time.
They drilled into his skull and everything.

This is my granddad and grandmom on my Mom's side.
Presenting Ernest and Floy Hendrix, my grandparents.
