Ok, so educate me a bit more. If it doesn't run over the cellular network and it doesn't involve tcp/ip (which means it isn't running over the Internet) what "network" is SMS running over? Shortwave?

I said cellular data network, not cellular network - massive difference.

iMessage has been buggy for me, I turn it off periodically and I never did that in my iPhone 4.

I would have loved to keep my iMessage on my iPhone5 turned on... But for some reason, some of the messages sent from some of my friends don't reach me - even though it reports as "delivered" on their end! This is irritating! Eventually, we continued our conversation on whatsapp due to iMessage's unreliability.

I keep it on, always. Having it on my Macs and iPads is a big plus for me and one of the reasons that I used to use Google Voice back in the Android days; unified messaging is a convenience. I just wish that the messages synced up better; it's odd that I'll be missing chunks of conversation (and it all went over iMessage, no SMS) on my other devices.

My wife and I use it the most, and she loves being able to "text" from her LTE iPad Mini.

There really is no drawback that I see to iMessages; hell, it's even encrypted for the more paranoid among us. What's not to like?

1. PRISM gathering all your messages for non US citizen. (for US the telecoms are properly also integrated with PRISM)
2. Buggy as hell. I had imessages turn up on my ipad, but not on my phone, cause i disabled it on my phone. Group messages were people with iMessage off, not getting an sms. Failures to send.
3. SMS/MMS in my country is rock solid, havn't have a delivery failure in years.

Mine is always on. From what you've described, I've actually went the other way & cancelled my unlimited family texting plan ($30/mo) to strictly use iMessage & Whatsapp. Most family, & friends have iPhones & my wife's line is on a pay per text plan, & I've opted out of texting completely. No regrets :)

PRISM would be gathering SMS/MMS messages more readily than iMessage texts. In fact, my understanding is that iMessages that might be gathered by PRISM would be unreadable due to the encryption, so iMessage would actually be preferable to those who are concerned about government snooping.

Works fine for me 99.99% of the time, and when on the off instance that an iMessage won't go through the fallback to SMS on my iPhone has worked 100% of the time. Obviously your iPad won't be able to send an SMS, it's not a cell phone.

3. SMS/MMS in my country is rock solid, havn't have a delivery failure in years.

Neat. SMS/MMS here in the U.S. on AT&T has also been rock solid and unless I've been in the middle of nowhere with no signal all my texts get through all the time. This doesn't negate the utility of iMessages IMO.

My friends son who is in high school had to turn it off. The amount of pics/videos that teenagers send ate up his data allowance. It was cheaper to use SMS with the unlimited text than to use iMessage with a small data plan.

For me I keep it on, I have unlimited so it doesn't really matter to me.

imessage is great, everyone that i know uses it. No one has it off.
I was in a place with no service, but wifi was available. It was great that i could still message people over wifi.

Me and my impossibly beautiful american friends leave our iMessage on because that's what we use. For our unfortunate friends, we message them via SMS and MMS.

My friend turned his off only because his iPhone is his business phone and he doesn't want clients knowing when he has read their texts and such. He says he wants to avoid the situations where he is on site doing something and another client texts him and expects an immediate response because they can see he read the message.

You can turn off Read Receipts.

I use it. The ability to get messages on my phone, tablet, and notebook is very nice.

^^ Ditto.

iMessages on iphone, ipad, and air is awesome.

I'm considering dumping friends and family who don't use it. I hate the green messages.

I have it on the whole time. Love this feature so much! It's like an integrated 'whatsapp' in iOS/Mac OSX. It gives me the ability to send and receive while I'm overseas for free plus the ability to deal with msgs on my Mac.

I can hardly understand those people who turned it off just because they can send infinite number of txt for free. Has it ever occurred to those people that others might not have unlimited txt?

Cell plans nowadays have unlimited texting, and limited data (iMessage uses data). The only reason I suspect someone would want to turn it off is if they are reaching their month's data quota (although I doubt iMessage uses much, but still).

Back on topic, I keep mine on all the time. I have unlimited data and unlimited texting. Plus, its faster than SMS, and has more features.

This is an old thread. Why revive it?

Nope. I have unlimited data and very limited texting. Pretty common. Next contract Ill drop texts completely. Pay per text would be cheaper for me.

Love iMessage, I can text from my MacBook and not have to get my phone.

That unified messaging is a killer feature for an ecosystem. I'm amazed that Google is ignoring their Voice architecture in favor of terrible Hangouts; there's so much wasted potential there. This is one area where I really feel that Apple has the leg up on Google.
