I leave mine on. I don't see a reason to purposely turn it off since it goes across as a text message anyway when the iMessage won't go through.

Cell plans nowadays have unlimited texting, and limited data (iMessage uses data). The only reason I suspect someone would want to turn it off is if they are reaching their month's data quota (although I doubt iMessage uses much, but still).

Back on topic, I keep mine on all the time. I have unlimited data and unlimited texting. Plus, its faster than SMS, and has more features.

This is an old thread. Why revive it?

lol i didn't actually notice the date of OP, simply saw it on the first page. someone must have replied before me, so it's bumped to the top.

Mine is always on. How can I check howmuch data it consumes per iMessage? Just curious..

I see absolutely no reason to turn it off. Besides all the awesome features that everyone has already mentioned, I really like that it doesn't have a character limit.

It's really frustrating getting the second half of a text message from someone long before I ever get the first half, and iMessage remedies that issue.

It's entirely seamless, so I never have to think about whether or not I'm sending an iMessage or a normal SMS, the device just takes care of it for me. The only time it can get slightly confusing is with my GF, who has an Android phone but still often iMessage's from her iPad for the typing speed when she's at home. I'm pretty sure that will change when her contract is up ;).

My relationship with iMessage is love/hate.

I love the unified messaging feature, being able to message people from my phone or Mac.

I love the fact that when it works the messages usually go through instantly or within a couple seconds, like an Instant Message. Makes conversation more active and lively.

I love the fact that photo's get sent through at full quality and very quickly if you have fast wifi or LTE. Video's get sent at much higher quality then MMS too.

I hate the fact that iMessages are often flaky and sometimes fail to go through for no apparent reason.

I hate the fact that iMessage only works as good as the network at the moment. SMS is much more resilient.

I hate how long it takes for iMessage to decide to send as SMS, sucking battery down in the meantime.

I also hate how iMessages can show up in one place and not the other, causing you to miss messages for the whole day.

The dislikes for me goes on and on but it works good enough that I haven't and likely won't ever swear it off for good.

It's always on and these days I get sort of annoyed if I have to text someone and their text bubble doesn't turn blue. Still amazes me though how many people have iPhones.

Enabled, I like to have as much forwarded to my Macbook so I dont have to go and check my phone everytime it buzzes. If only there were a way to push all texts thru iMessage

I have a Macbook Air, iPad 4, iPhone 5 and iPod Touch.

I leave iMessage on so I can reply and get messages on any Apple device I happen to on at that moment.

I turn it off. When I first got the iPhone 5 on O2 I was billed for some MMS that I apparently sent to the number 00000000000 (I can't remember exactly how many zeros there were) 1234. The cause of this was iMessage interpreting my number in the body of the message as 'multimedia', and the reason it was sent to that number was because some of my contacts at the time hadn't told me their new numbers, so the message failed to deliver to certain people.

I leave it on all the time. The only issues I've ever had with it are when Apple's servers go down for a few minutes. Which is not all that often. In those cases, an SMS was sent instead.

Reasons for using it: Its encrypted from sender to receiver! Also, you get read and delivered receipts in addition to receiver typing response awareness. It's really flawless.

I travel overseas and turn SMS off all the time to ensure I only use iMessage on WiFi when in the hotel (so as not to get charged if it inadvertently sends an SMS). So in reality, I turn off SMS sometimes, but never turn iMessage off.

I leave mine on, a lot of my cousins, siblings, etc do not have phones, but have iPod Touches or iPads. I have unlimited texting too, so I don't see why they 'leave it off' anyway, you might as well keep it on.

When iMessage first came out I didn't too much or care for it, but I really love it now. To be honest, that's probably the only thing that's really keeping me on iPhones. Not that I would go out and switch to Android, because there's really no reason to, but I almost can't do that if I wanted. :)

I leave mine on all the time. Recently we were doing an apartment search and it proved invaluable to me. Many real estate agents work with iphones now and it was really handy to be able to send messages back and forth from the office desk rather than having to peck away at my iPhone or my wife's ipad.

I know it's a ridiculous want, but I would LOVE this to come to other operating systems, including Windows and Android (yes, I know it won't happen, but I can dream, right?) But just like blackberry messenger (in the olden days) it is going to stay exclusive to Apple. For now, not such a bad thing as there are many people, at least stateside, that own Apple products.

If we are talking text (not pics) it is a ridiculously small number. You'd have to send thousands to reach 1mb transferred. AFAIK there is no really good way to actually check how much data is being transferred with each message though. Apple could implement this in theory, but in practice, I think the demand is so low they likely won't ever bother.

I use iMessage but when I send a text without my data on it doesn't work it says message failed so I'm think of turning it off I get unlimited text also I don't have my data on a lot as I try to save my gbs.
