No, airplane mode won't allow calls.

So suppose I am watching a movie or playing a game on my PC, why would I need 3G to be turned on (anyway in my house I have no 3G signal) or wifi to be on and "eating" my battery for no reason at all. As soon as I need to use the internet it will take me 2 seconds to enable wifi and use the internet.

Ergh to save battery??

The less charges the better for the battery... but it's not about battery life (not only for that) why should I have 3G/wifi on when I don't need it??

you guys are to funny! you can do all of those things without a special jailbreak app! my point is why do you need an app to do those things while in applications?? if you are so worried about your battery life while you are sitting on your PC of all things, plug your phone in to charge so when you're done on your PC you have a full charge no worries! when it all boils down to it you aren't going to need more than a days charge on your iphone if you charge it over night like most people do. if you dont have 3g in your area, fine, turn it off, but why do you need some jailbreak specialized app to do that BETWEEN applications. This app is for geeks that love having extra stuff on their phones just so they can say they have it.

Back in the olden times... people were scared of charging. I just charge every night so I can wake up with a full battery and 100% battery in my iPhone.

i know its so simple! and i don't have to worry about constantly turning things on and off with specialized apps. genius!

I turn 3G off when I'm not browsing.

In Edinburgh, there is quite a few dead spots where I get no 3G reception, but GPRS connection. I find it much more consistent to just use GPRS (or EDGE) than 3G and have it flicking between 3G, EDGE and GPRS when I'm on the move.

Nothing to do with battery life - purely just reception reasons.

I leave 3G off at home because I notice that in some spots of my house I can get one cell of 3G, however if some tries to call me it drops the 3G and goes to E.

Therefore, during the night my phone will constantly switch between 3G and E which drains my battery 15 - 25%. I notice when I just leave E on I have 0 drain.

i only turn on 3G or wifi when i need to go online to save battery. but i was wondering if i don't use the phone at all, will battery life be the same with them on or off? i always think just turning them on will waste battery. now obviously if i use 3G or wifi, my battery will drain faster, but i'm asking if you don't use it and it's just on...

3g

i cut 3g off unless i use it. and wifi off at work and on at home and out on the town
i'm not done farting around with my 3g so if i dont do that my battery would die down evetyday

You're into the fart apps eh?

I leave 3g, WiFi, and Location Services off unless they're specifically needed, with the exception of at home on weekends, when I leave WiFi on.

3G/WiFi/Bluetooth/Location always on, but then the iPhone is nearly always in a charger so it makes little difference to me.

3G On, WiFi on, all the time.

Still get 2 days light use out of it, good enough for me, 1 day when its been used as a games machine, iPod, and web browser.

Still, charged every night.

I don't do it while running an app, well unless it's off and the app needs it..... (rare)

I hate having to go through 3 screens in order to turn wifi or 3g on.... and i hate even more that I have to use a button to exit the last screen... whenever I need wifi all I have to do is just sweep with my finger...

Maybe apple should make the top bar more usable, so you will be able to switch wifi on/off easily, just as you change language on your computer...

I leave them all on as well.

But wish there was an app that lets me just push (for instance), 3G or Wifi or BT and it automatically shuts them off/on.

sbsettings is damn close. One swipe across the statusbar and one button press to turn each one off.

No sense having 3G on if you arent surfing the web. All your other apps dont really benefit from it. 3G also drains battery very fast.

Not using 3G doesn't drain the battery fast unless you're in an area where it keeps switching from EDGE to 3G.

Ya I do! That's absurd! why would you need to be changing vital things that should be always on, on and off WITHIN different applications??? Seems pretty useless to me. Who cares if you can turn wifi off while still playing solitaire?! Big whoop. Why would you need to do something like that in the first place?

Though I don't normally feed the trolls, here's my examples:

Example #1
I use the FaceBook app quite a bit to arrange things with friends, etc. The place where I work blocks FaceBook on their network, including wireless. If I have forgotten to disable my wireless and I start FaceBook it will never update it's information. I then see that, swipe my finger across the top, hit the wireless icon and voila, wireless is off and FaceBook is now updating over 3G. Took me less that 2 seconds and only one swipe. To me that's far more useful than having to exit the FaceBook app, switch screens to where my settings are, hit the wifi line, slide the toggle to off, exit settings, switch back to the screen with FaceBook and relaunch the program.

Example #2
I keep my phone at about 60% brightness all the time. Unfortunately, in my brightly lit lunchroom that setting can make it hard to watch movies. Of course I never remember this BEFORE I start the movie/TV show, nope I realize it at the first night/underground or other dimly lit scene. Again, with SBSettings, it's swipe, touch the brightness icon, slide to full and exit. 2 seconds and I never had to leave my movie. Without it i have to exit the iPod app, switch screens to where my settings are, hit the brightness line, slide it up to 100%, exit settings, switch back to the screen with the iPod app, relaunch the program, pick my movie/tv show out of the list and start watching again.

I agree completely and provided 2 real world examples that each probably happen several times a week.

To answer the original question, I keep 3G & Bluetooth on all the time an only launch wifi at home or when I need it.

3G drains your battery faster in standby according to apple and every test Ive seen. Leaving it on for all of your other apps also drains the battery quite a bit more.

Good to know. It seems like my battery hardly ever moves. I get about the same battery life as I did on the first gen and that only had EDGE... so I don't know.

It's more efficient to browse the web on 3G though because the number of web pages that you can load are doubled because they open much faster. With EDGE, yeah the battery drains slower, but you have to wait and wait and wait for the web page to finish loading, so you see fewer pages before your battery is low. The question is... what is better? Using EDGE for 30 minutes and looking at 20 web pages or using 3G for 30 minutes and looking at 40 web pages?
