Do you leave your Apple Watch on silent all the time?

Always on silent, only time I hear Apple Watches out in the wild in public are usually from old folks, but not most.

Watch on silent vibrate is all I need. Phone is completely silent: no vibrating, either. The vibrations are different and you can learn to correlate them to kinds of notifications. The only time I turn sounds on the watch is if I’m doing something that prevents me from feeling the vibrations, like bicycling. The only time I turn sounds on the phone is if I’m not wearing the watch.

I know all of the distinct vibrations of my watch! I’ve also been wearing one for 4+ years now 😂

Exactly, folks with phone and alarm sounds on in public are annoying, almost as much as those people constantly on speakerphone (most hilarious those who continue to treat their iPhones as a walkie talkie and pushing it either against their ear or take it off to speak in the Mike).
You ever noticed that those people always seem to SHOUT, rather than speak?

Of course it's always silent, isn't that the whole point, to get notifications without any disturbing noise?

all devices are on silent, 100% of the time. I have some custom vibrations set, but zero audio for ringers other than timers and alarms

The day I first got an Apple Watch (AW3) many years ago, I turned everything on silent and it has been that way since. One of the biggest advantages of my Apple Watch is my ability to turn everything on silent. I turn off notifications for almost everything just because I don’t like to be bothered (I do have a favorites list for family/friends to get a hold of me in emergencies/if needed).

This probably has a huge impact on my battery life too not to mention sanity.

the main reason I bought an Apple Watch was to get totally silent notifications no one knows come in but me. I've never even heard mine make a sound other than the water ejector thing. I kinda wish it just didn't have a speaker at all

Both my AWU and iPhone are always on silent/vibrate. I cannot stand for those around me to always hear my devices going off. People are nosey :D
Same. The only time I will turn audible watch notifications on is when I am expecting an important call/text/notification of some sort and I am too busy with other things (like work) that I may not even notice the watch vibrate.

I only use silent mode at night, during the day the sound is always on.

My iPhone, however, has been on silent mode since the day I got it.
It doesn't make sense to me. The watch is always touching you, while you wear it, and you can easily feel the vibration (else, increase the level). To me it is one the advantages of wearing a smart watch.

Yes, silent 24/7. Having noises on the watch (outside of apps where sound is required or is useful, such as workouts) feels a little too inconsiderate for me. Enough devices make noise, so it's nice to have one that can alert you with a 'tap' instead, which as oddly as it sounds, feels more personal to me.

The only occasion where a sound is useful is in a social setting, because then when you do get a notification and go to read it on your wrist, the person(s) you're talking to is aware that you're checking a notification and not clock watching.

As per the title?

If you do leave your Apple Watch on silent, may I ask why?

I’m trying to get my Apple Watch alarm to only vibrate (no audible alarm) and from my research, it seems like the only way that will happen is if I put my watch in silent mode.

That got me thinking: I’m no doubt not going to remember to do that every night, so what about if I left it on silent permanently?

I can see benefits for this, but I can also see drawbacks. For instance, I know what each distinct alert sound, sounds like, so I don’t even have to look at my watch sometimes when it alerts me about something. If it was muted, I’d almost be forced to see what it’s trying to tell me.

So, do you leave your Apple Watch on silent? If so, please enlighten me why?

Many thanks.
My phone and watch are always on silent. Between work, meetings, dinners, and other stuff, I have trained myself not to be attached to my devices. I can always glance at my watch to see what the notification is for texts and decide if I need to open it on my phone or wait to reply till later.
I usually spend about 5-10 mins at the top of each hour clearing out emails, replying to messages and following up on notifications. Then go back to what I'm doing for the next 45-55 mins before checking phone again.

I don't really answer phone calls and most of the calls I do are pre-planned FaceTime calls anyway. I just listen to the voicemail and call back if necessary.

All I’m trying to do, basically, is to have an alarm that wakes me by vibrating my watch only, and no sound. Seems like there’s no workaround, other than to silence everything?
I use Sleep Cycle which does the job for me. Wakes my up slowly without any alarm/sound on phone or watch. That way the wife isn't disturbed. Got into this habit when I used to work at 4a; now I'm a more normal 9a, but still like this setup. Of course, her alarm goes off before mine and wakes up up most days. She can't switch to the silent setup like me.

If someone gets a call at work, or their texts go off... we're all like what was that!
With me... no one knows what notifications I'm getting!

I’m actually the exact opposite.

My phone is always on silent, and the watch is always making sounds except when I’m in a do-not-disturb mode.

I only need the one or the other to make noise, and, in general, I’m using the watch instead of the phone. It’s certainly more convenient to look at my wrist than to dig out the phone to know what the racket is about. Plus, it’s much faster to silence the watch than the phone if it’s some kind of spam.

Same here. I really don't mind the Watch tones, kinda pleasant.

All my iDevices and Apple Watch are permanently on silent, with the exception of my ringtone.

I can't tell you the last time my iPhone rang with a ringtone.
Remember the days when we used to make or buy ringtones? Oh how times have changed...
Lol I haven’t used a ringtone in a long long time. I still have it download my purchased tones from back in the day.

Munsters.
Star Trek TNG
Stark Trek communication sound. (txt notifications).

Haven’t used them since forever.

I still have my original one from Stewie, "Lois, Lois, Mom, Mom, Mommy, Mommy, Mama, Mama, Ma, Ma, Mum..." 😂

Discussion of pros and cons of keeping your watch on silent aside, I believe OP can set the watch to automatically turn on silent mode at night and turn the sound back on in the morning, by creating automations in the Shortcut app.
