I've only done this once.. it was in front of a hospital and it was this short skinny Chinese girl who was clearly harmless and had to make an important phone call.

And judging from my stature (6'4, 230 lbs) I knew she wasn't going to do anything out the ordinary.

I dont particularly like the thought of having a strangers facial grease or makeup smeared all over the glass of my phone.

i take a train to work everday going thru some rough neighborhoods and maybe once every 3-4 months i get someone asking me to let them use my cell to make a personal call. i didnt mind letting them use it as it was a crappy phone(samsung epic 4g) and i never thought someone would want to steal it(thankfully no one has ever tried). today some dude asked me to let me borrow my phone(iphone 5) and i did but i was a little nervous. i even moved over towards the staircase in case he made a run for it. he did not and thanked me for letting him use the phone....

do you guys ever let people use your phone for calls? i dont think i am anymore as i dont have theft insurance, only applecare

While you seem like a good kind person, I think sharing your phone with strangers is a bad move. You stated that you are in a rough neighborhood which makes it even more a poor decision. Usually in rough neighborhoods there is crime/drugs. Is it possible that he was calling a drug dealer to pick up some drugs? With your phone number, these same people now can get a hold of you if need be. What if they are being tracked by the police and then your number shows up during their investigation?

I know these are really extreme circumstances but stuff you should consider. I wouldn't do it but then again that could piss off the peeps you walk by from time to time and you may get mugged at some point.

Don't walk in troubled places because trouble will have a way of finding you.
