I'd offer to make the call and put it on speaker - depending on the person and the vibe I get when speaking with them.

nobody has ever asked me to use my iPhone and I live in a very big city ... I would probably say yes as it seems to be quite rare.

The old ... do for others as you would want done in return theory :)

i take a train to work everday going thru some rough neighborhoods and maybe once every 3-4 months i get someone asking me to let them use my cell to make a personal call. i didnt mind letting them use it as it was a crappy phone(samsung epic 4g) and i never thought someone would want to steal it(thankfully no one has ever tried). today some dude asked me to let me borrow my phone(iphone 5) and i did but i was a little nervous. i even moved over towards the staircase in case he made a run for it. he did not and thanked me for letting him use the phone....

do you guys ever let people use your phone for calls? i dont think i am anymore as i dont have theft insurance, only applecare

only if real emergency, crime or fire

No. Last time I let a stranger use my phone, it was a drunk idiot, fighting with his girlfriend.

The story goes...Someone knocked on my apartment door, and I answered it. It was the neighbor who lived in my building (I had seen him outside/around, we had talked before) He informs me he needs to make a quick call, because his phone was broke. He showed me the broke phone, so I let him use my iPhone...He dials the number, and when someone answers (his girlfriend he had just apparently BEAT, or something) he starts screaming at the top of his lungs...This turned into a 30 min ordeal or so...Dude is 2 times my size, so I didn't feel comfortable just trying to get the phone back, and it became apparent FAST he was very drunk. He left and then came back, beating on my door, to use the phone again. I answer the door, and he has brought a pack of beer down and wants to chill in my apartment. I let him in, thinking I can calm him down, possibly help him drink some of those Heinekens! He ends up staying for 2 hours, then finally staggers out, gets halfway up the stairs and passes out. The neighbor heard all the commotion/screaming, and called the police on me...They come knocking at my door around 1am. I answer the door, explain the situation, but they are just not buying it...Thankfully, the drunk guy was still passed out on the stairs.

So, the guy hated me afterward because he thought I had called the cops on him, and the d-bag neighbor made sly remarks to me whenever I was seen outside. The drunk ended up getting kicked out, and apologized right before he left, saying he was going to get help with Alcohol abuse.

I ended up moving to different building because I was tired of the neighbor being a ********. which resulted in me paying about $50 more a month (did get 2 bedrooms though!), but the rental office waived my early lease termination fee because of the situation and I was staying within the community! :D

Lesson learned. Don't get involved in anyway possible, especially in anything that won't benefit you.

I've only had one person do that, and it was a tiny girl that looked completely trustworthy and had no way of out-running me. She said (and I believe) that her phone had been stolen and she needed to call it to see if someone would pick up.

I offered to make the call for her, or to send a text for her. She asked for a call and I did so on speaker.

I think that's as far as you should ever go, and that's only if it is an emergency and you can outrun or beat them up. I mean, what if they have you make the call, and while you are dialing they hit you over the head or something?

I carry a concealed weapon and can run a mile in 7 minutes. I don't think I worry about people stealing my phone. :). But, c'mon sometimes you just have to do good and get some good karma on your side.

that karma **** doesn't work lol you do something nice and the person ends up ****ing you over. Then you're sitting there like "I shouldn't have done that people don't deserve kindness".

If it is an emergency I will call help for them. These days you just can't trust anyone.

If you do let someone borrow it and they run off, now you need to find someone willing to lend a phone, and by these posts...good luck ha.

socal aint the real south ;)

ive let people use mine, just depends on th person.

i cant believe how many people are like "omg its 2012 you dont have a cell phone?"
just like the people who freak out when you dont have a face book

Having a Facebook and cell phone are two different things.

I never let anyone use my phone. NEVER. I'm even cautious around my mom because she may drop it.

No. Mainly because I don't want their germs on my phone and secondly, I don't want my number given out. Who knows who they are calling...and most times, they won't be calling blocked.

Perhaps it's a 'British reserve' thing, but I've never been asked and would be amazed if anyone ever did. I might let them, depending on the person and the context. Probably not though. I cringe when my mates even hold my new phones with their chunky rings and clumsy fingers.

(Cue scores of posts from fellow Brits saying it happens all the time....)

Same here, although it would depend on the circumstances and the person asking.

I have in the past. However, in today's climate, no.

Depending on the situation, perhaps. In the worst case, I would offer to place the call. I would expect the same treatment, given the proper the proper circumstances.

No. Never. I actually had some guy ask me and my friend could he use either if our iPhones while we were waiting at the bus stop during the DNC last month. We both said no and he got kind of offended.

It was better for him that I didn't let him use it. If he had ran off with who knows how badly I would've hurt him once I caught him.

Anyone can easily go to Walmart and get a tracphone for a few dollars. There's no reason for an adult to not have a cell phone these days.

Speaking of that there was an incident on campus a few weeks ago where these two guys approached a girl and asked to use her iPhone then ran off with it. Won't happen to me.

...rightt....?!
but the irony of someone freaking out that you dont have (either) is quite the same.

people act like its impossible to function without a cell phone. its ridiculous.

Sure you can use my phone. I'm just going to need some collateral and I'm going to crank call whatever number you dial every time I get drunk.
