What is the point of naming a computer? I simply refer to it as my laptop. The official computer name is simply "Phil's Computer"

When you have 8+ computers (and, obviously, no life) naming them is fun.
One of my clients named every system in his domain (about 250 PC's) after greek gods. Now, that was a PITA. I like my simple nameing convention.

well i do name my HD's, for sharing purposes i know which is which but not the computers.

Well, similarly, if you have a lot of computers on a network, it's helpful to name them with unique names so you can tell them apart easily.

Besides, it's like giving them a personality. And when you use your machines as much as I do, it's nice to have something to call them other than their product name.

I named my Mac Pro "Superman" because at my summer job they name all of the power macs after super heroes...but i figured that my computer would now outdo machines such as "gandalf, neo, mr. and mrs. incredible, hulk...etc"

I haven't named my powerbook but maybe i should...

... I would not name my Macs nor anything else for that matter...

What about your (potential) children ;) ... I am a chemist and I name my computers after elements... my linux box (Debian...best OS ever) is Silicon... my Network is Hydrogen... and my powerbook is Aluminum.
