I am trying not to read too much on my 6s - my peepers need a bigger screen and yet I find myself doing that and watching subtitled movies on it. I need to get something bigger pronto.
Its nice reading on a larger screen. Would you believe I read the Steve Jobs book on my iPhone 3GS at the time? That was interesting on such a tiny screen.

Bless your eyes! I mean that. Yeah, I read a lot of comics on the phones and I wouldn't even do that now on the iPad Mini 4 (as much as I love the screen, I need bigger.)

iPhone 3GS is how I got started on Kindle. I had a long commute and lots of free time. My first read was a long book - Shantaram - I think it's like 800 pages in print, and read it all on the little screen. I was hooked from then on based on the portability and ability to pick up and read at any time, without having to remember to bring the book with me.

You make do with what you have. Heck, I used to read WAP sites on a feature phone wth a 2" highly pixelated LCD. The primary reason I bought the (original) iPhone is for reading fanfiction (via Safari). Stanza (now-defunct epub reader) kept me locked in to iOS for the longest time (pretty much 5 years worth of reading on a 3.5" display). Interestingly enough, I much preferred reading text on the iPhone 4's ~300+ ppi 3.5" screen than on the iPad 2's ~150 ppi 9.7" display. Wasn't until the iPad went retina that I started using for anything other than manga.

That said, I never could stand reading comics/manga on the iPhone's tiny screen. Just not a fan of guided view. I tend to read in landscape mode (2-page spread). Manga is pretty much the entire reason I bought an iPad. Now that I'm starting up on American comics, tempted to get the 12.9" iPad Pro. While 9.7" makes for a comfy replacement to Japanese tankobons or bunko, it's a wee bit too small for American comics when reading landscape. :p

Well, when retina screen first came out, people kept trying to see the difference by comparing pictures, but IMO the real difference was felt when reading text. It's just way more comfortable reading text on a retina screen.

I also find that on the iPhone, a line of text is the size your eyes can take in at a glance, like a newspaper column. Depending on the content, this sometimes makes it easier to read on the smaller screen. If you are doing the kind of reading where you just start at the beginning and keep going and never have to look back to check what was written before, smaller screen is easier.

Yup, you do make do. Good point on the various iPad sizes for comic reading. I don't think I could do comic reading on the Mini 4 either, watching movies and reading pdfs etc. yes, but something like comics and involved text I'd go for the larger iPP too. I think my ideal set up will be 5SE phone (just for phone usage), iPad Mini (whatever) and large iPP. If the Mini gets pencil support even better.

In fairness, if I read in portrait instead of landscape, I'd be more than okay with the iPad mini for manga. The way I'm doing it now, I'm effectively viewing a single page at ~7" diagonal (2:3 aspect ratio). Landscape on the 12.9" iPP would be ~9.3" diagonal for single page which is large enough for me for American comics.

good to know that for some titles, the Mini works great. Appreciate the math / footwork in your post.
Thanks.

I read "News" on my iPad every morning, plus numerous forums, web sites, etc. Don't read books on line; never got into that portion of the electronic age.

I keep an iPad4 just for reading books; I find that the 6S screen is too small for extended periods of reading... these old eyeballs need the larger screen. The ability to carry numbers of books in one small package fits my reading requirements and it is years since I last purchased a printed book. I don't wear a watch - iPhones are phenomenally accurate timepieces - so it is handy to have the time on my printed page on the iPad as well. I can get lost in a book and lose track of time.:)

I read quite a bit on my iPad Air for my grad classes. I like being able to notate right in the app reading in (iBooks, Kindle, etc.) I also read magazine articles a lot.

I prefer holding a book in my hands but I do read books on the Air 2 from time to time. From iPad 4 and earlier I found it was too heavy/uncomfortable to read on.

Over the course of the last few months I have started purchasing books from Apple. I still don't believe books in digital format should cost more than $5 though.

Yes, both Apple and Kindle are now starting to charge high prices for eBooks. They seem to be done with buying market share with low prices and ebooks are now priced the same or even higher than paperbacks, their only advantage being earlier availability.

Since I really enjoy the paperback reading experience, I've found that lately I'm buying more paperbacks and far less eBooks - except for the classics that are still free.

I bought the original iPad mini specifically for reading. It and it's successors have been fantastic for that.

Before I was downloading pdfs and printing them out to put in three ring binders. This was time consuming and very bulky.

I tried using kindle e-ink devices, but they didn't handle pdfs well.

The mini was brilliant. For some it's too small to be a good pdf reader, but I have good near vision, and I loved being able to carry my books around in my suit jacket pocket. When the retina version came out, it just got better.

Now I only buy physical books when I can't find an electronic version, kindle, pdf, or whatever.

I agree they should be cheaper than physical copies however, selling them for $5 would do a major disservice to authors who are lucky if they get 10% of the cover price. Going digital doesn't increase margins for author (unless they self-publish) all it does is increase them for the retailer and publisher.

Maybe there's no longer a need for the publisher. Maybe it's time for authors to reap 100% of the profit.

Publishers provide services such as editing and marketing. Oh, and cover design. There's also prestige in being picked to publish by a known publishing house. So I don't think publishers will go away completely, but yeah, it's easier and cheaper than ever for authors to self publish.
