I always kind raise an eyebrow when I hear these kind of questions. Of course it isn't necessary, most things aren't but having the convenience is well worth it.

Is the Bluetooth connection to my phone in my car necessary? No but rely on it now.

Is wearing a traditional watch necessary? No but many do.

Is having an iPad really needed? Isn't it just a bigger iPhone?

I got my wife a 38 mm space gray. She is the furthest thing from a tech person you can imagine. She has had hers for a few weeks now and absolutely loves it. She is surprised how much she likes the convenience of having her phone on a charger and not having to go find it every time she gets a message or the phone rings. The great part about that is how it will connect to wifi when on our home network so not relied on the Bluetooth connection. She is really enjoying the fitness part of it. Yes the phone tracks her steps, but she could never really figure that out and hated tacking it with her on walks and runs. There is something more intuitive for her with this device than the other fitness trackers and heart rate monitors she had.

For me, I spend most of my working day on my feet often with a small tool belt on. I get between 40-60 phone calls and texts and about 100+ emails a day. Not a lot but enough I hate reaching for my phone every time it buzzes. A casual glance at my wrist would be much better than getting up and stopping what I am doing to triage those calls / texts / emails.

That being said, I am still waiting on my 42 SSSB. It's looking like at least a month or so before I will get it, but at least I see how my wife is adjusting to hers.

I actually think it is great that all the watches are functionally the same. It was a great idea to not differentiate between price points with functionality.

I don't regret the purchase of the 2 apple watches as i sold them on ebay for a nice profit! :)

Surprisingly, I love my watch and find myself wearing it all day long. This is coming from a person who never liked wearing watches before, perhaps only to accessorize with a suit.

Just the other night I had a long wait for a restaurant, and I set my countdown timer on the watch so i knew when i had to go back to check in. I went to a bar to get a drink with my date, and it was nice not having to take my phone out of my pocket just to check the countdown timer. Even nicer it was in a complication right on the watch face, and all I had to do was turn my wrist (and not have to press any buttons).

When the restaurant texted me, I got a google voice notification on my watch to let me know, and we left the bar and got back to the restaurant just in time.

At dinner, the waiter talked about the watch, and I showed him a few basic features. The table next to us couldn't help but listen and watch along. When we left, I checked the weather complication on my watch face, and gave my date my jacket since it was a little chilly. While you could do it on the phone, it was so much quicker and a more streamlined experience with the watch. Especially when you are on a date or in a rush. You just turn your wrist instead of taking out your phone, unlocking, opening the weather app, etc.

Just an example of one night where the watch has demonstrated utility, on top of its aesthetics, which I have fallen in love with.

Driving with the watch has been a pleasure. Checking last minute messages from my dates telling me they will be late, or they are ready. One thing I hated doing was getting my phone out of my pocket or from the passenger seat, unlocking it, and checking the notification. The watch has been great for in-car use. (yes, it does turn on when turning the steering wheel, but it doesn't bother me).

It's not perfect. Siri needs work. Some button presses are not responsive. And voice commands need to be more robust. But for a first-gen product, it's great. Future generations with real health tracking features like blood-glucose, blood pressure and oxygenation, etc. will be absolutely killer products that almost everyone must have.

At this price point, for the SS at 700+, it is definitely not a must-have. Even at the $400 aluminum price point, it is not a "must" have. But if you have the spare change, it is definitely a fun and fashionable item that will add utility to your smart device experience.

No regrets, it's a great device. It's usefulness is not in how often you use it, but how convenient it is to use in certain situations. Carrying something with two hands and the phone rings? Nose touch and answer the call! I much prefer notifications on the watch vs. on the phone. "Hey Siri" works for me at about a 95% success rate. (Others have had less, not sure why I'm more successful) and the dictation of Siri is scary good. I think since I've owned the watch I've had maybe 3 or 4 Siri fails where the dictation was wrong, this is out of 100s of uses.

The battery life is a complete non-issue. I've left it on all night and charged it for an hour in the morning while taking a shower and getting ready and been able to easily get through that day. So basically two days of usage with a single hour of it not on my wrist (starting from 100% charged). I've worn it in the shower many times, but I prefer to have it off to make sure my wrist get's clean and the sensor needs some wiping from time to time.

The potential is huge and the current state, especially considering it's a v1.0(.1) is pretty incredible to me. But I find new ways to use it all the time. I just don't think most people are openminded enough to explore it. As more apps come online (especially as devs figure out reasonable use cases) it will be an even better device.

I have not received mine yet, but working for a wireless retailer and having tried several other smart watches, if you are not sold yet on the apple watch, wait for the second generation. There truly are other smart watches that do a bit more, but they do lack the quality of the apple watch.
Second generation apple watch, I will also buy, and I predict it will be the real game changer. The current generation isn't anything special.
I can tell you, it is a nice luxury as many have stated, it is worth the money purely because of the quality and materials. Owning a smartwatch is nice and I'm sure you won't regret it.
It sounds like you ask because you've put a lot of thought into it and you want it, but you're just trying to justify the purchase at this point. If you can afford it and you'd like to at least try it, I'd say go for it. You can always return for a full refund. There's nothing like playing with a real apple watch. You really don't get a feel for the true experience in the Apple Store. All the demos run a demo reel.

I'm enjoying mine, but It reminds me of the original iphone, so much potential, but not currently quite there.

For me I would really like to see better health and fitness apps. I don't think the watch is a product that is going away though so in time I think it will become fantastic.

Absolutely no regrets here. I'm very happy with it, wear it every day since receiving it on the 24th. Love the subtle haptic notifications, Hey Siri works perfectly nearly every time, and activity rings are quite addicting and have upped my activity level in such a great way. I don't at all regret getting the SS instead of Sport, I love the look of the SS watch, and since I love it, I'm happy to wear it every day.

I think the important thing is to have reasonable expectations - if it's a question of usefulness, then you may join the others who are disappointed. It helps me use my phone a lot less, but is it necessary? No. Do I love it? Yes.

how do u get so many dates? lol

I bought the SS and have zero regrets. I've had it since day one of release day and am so used to it it so I don't recall all the things I was thrilled with it about. Mainly though, I don't have to drag my phone out if I get a notification. If I'm expecting an email or a text msg and get a notification I just glance at my watch to see if it's what I've been waiting for. I get the sports updates on my watch without having to pull out my watch. I like tapping my friends and exchanging heart beats with them. There's obviously much more to it but those are some of the main things.
So yeah, after more than a month I'm still happy with my purchase and if I had it to do it over again knowing all I know now, I would still buy it.

You sound like a well written apple ad. Good points though; as many have said, I think it's in the little things, and nuances that you really notice the convenience of the AW in one's lifestyle.

It's been a couple of weeks now and its become a regular part of my day, I put it on in the morning and take it off at bed time. In fact I didn't think that I would take to it so well.

However, my wife's interest is waning. Last night I noticed she took it off after getting home from work. We'll have to see how long it lasts for her.

I like it much more than I expected, coming from a Pebble Steel. I got the stainless steel with black classic buckle, and don't regret it at all. It is just so much nicer in every way.

It doesn't have that "wow" factor that the iphone gave me when I first got one

But I'm sure with time it'll get much better due to updates, apps, etc...

Honestly, there have been few if any products that have matched the wow factor of the original iPhone, and I think that's partially why people's expectations have been set artificially high. While it's not without its problems, this is a very impressive product. I don't regret getting it.

For me, the information on the watch faces (i.e. time + complications) and haptic notifications are worth the price of entry. Everything else is pretty much gravy. I don't use many third-party apps yet, but I think that will slowly change as better/native ones come out.

I love it!

I have the 38mm SS Milanese Loop and I love it.

I'm a watch person (I always wear one) and I love the look, fun, and convenience of my Apple Watch.

I think it's a fantastic first generation device, and I have no regrets!

No regrets at all. It makes my life easier:

I'm cooking .... "Hey Siri, set a timer for 30 mimutes".
I'm driving .... "Hey Siri, directions home"
I'm listening to music on Bluetooth headphones ... can adjust volume, stop music, etc.

It reminds me to drink water .. and stand up.

There is just so much it does to make my life less stressful. I would be lost without it. I love the aesthetics .. the beautiful sun across the sky and blooming flowers watch faces. I love having my grocery list on my wrist.

I think Apple did an amazing, amazing job on this watch. Bravo!
