Do You Regret Purchasing... Wifi/3G iPad?

Weird the US gets totally unlocked iPads and Japan doesn't. So Japanese iPads are SIM-locked while in Japan, but aren't locked when used outside of Japan? Odd...

tell me; odd it is ... you can use the japanese iPad outside Japan; but I can't choose a different provider inside. I guess there was some money involved to protect the market.

I honestly love the far that you can have the internet whenever you want, but now that unlimited data was taken away, 3G is a no go for me. Trust me I would use that data to death and I don't like being restrained by limits. That's what the whole industry is going to move to anyway, so maybe it's time for you to jump onboard.

I have a WiFi 16 gb iPad. No regrets as it was a gift from my school, though I guess I could have sold it and paid a little extra for the 3G model. Since I already have an iPhone anyway, it works fine for when I need an on-the-go look-up. Otherwise school, home, and apartment at school all have WiFi and those are the primary places in which I need it.

I have a wifi. Several times I've wished I had 3G, but I wouldn't say regret bc it just wasn't in the budget and no amount of regret would change that. I would have had to wait another 6 months to buy it, and I'm very glad I've had my iPad in that time. Whenever I upgrade though - probably not for 2-3 years - I think I'm going to make sure that I plan for 3G or future equivalent.

I do not regret the wifi-only iPad I will be buying next week. Ill be around wifi most times I will want to use it so 3G wont be necessary, not to mention thats what my iPhone is for. I wont regret it mostly because Ill still own an iPad, though :).

But now that I think of it, if I were to go with the Wifi+3G iPad, Id prob drop my iPhone data package to the lower tier, so as to save a little money.

Not really because I'm locked in a contract with Rogers and that I got an amazing deal on my 64GB One 3G.

I sold it for $500 and bought 64GB BlackBerry PlayBook, sealed for $500. Hot Spot/Tethering works well so whenever iPad 3 comes out I will be buying Wi-Fi.

I'm glad I opted for the 3G which I just activated today.
I was gonna opt for just the Wifi model but I decided to spend a bit more.
Because it seemed when I found wifi which was very rarely it was either locked or was pushing out some type of connection that didn't have internet like a wireless printer.

I bought my iPad 1 3G on launch day, and but never used 3G once since I had a Verizon mifi previous to buying an iPad. Since I never used 3G on my iPad 1, I went with iPad 2 wifi only... and upgraded my Verizon 2200 mifi to a 4G LTE mifi. I don't regret it. As for the lack of GPS on the wifi... I did use a Driving GPS app on my iPad 1 3G, but it was very difficult to mount in my car, so all I did was listen to voice command with no visual. My iPhone was a lot easier to mount in place where I can keep my eyes on the road... and give a little glance to get a visual. My iPhone is more user friendly as a GPS, and safer, than when I used my iPad as a GPS navigation.

I have a the WiFi iPad 2 and I do regret only getting the WiFi version. With the original iPad, I bought the 3G version and barely used it. I think I used 3G two months of the 11 I owned it. And when I switched to the Verizon iPhone, I got a tethering plan, so no need to pay for a 3G data plan when I can tether.

But that's where I was wrong. I didn't use 3G much on my original iPad, but I DID use it. Now I have to pay $20/month on my Verizon bill, that sometimes goes unused, and I can only get Verizon 3G. I should have purchased an AT&T (or GSM) iPad 2, as I learned in May while on vacation, I was in a Verizon dead zone, but AT&T had perfect coverage (my brother has AT&T, and was getting 4+mbps). This way, if Verizon doesn't work in the area I'm in, I have the AT&T option, and vice-versa. So I actually plan on selling my WiFi only iPad and splurging on the 3G version of the iPad 2. I removed my tethering plan last month, as I really wasn't using it. But my workplace doesn't offer WiFi, and I work alone on weekends, so I like to put Hulu or Netflix on in the background from time to time while working.

i dont regret it at all, i have the ipad 1+3g and i got it cheap, and i love how im always connected and the thing doubles as a map when walking around a new place. also i love how its just connected ALL the time, even with 3g on i can get a decent amount of hours on it, i hardly notice :D:D

I bought the WiFi only version of the first iPad, just testing the water really. I had a MiFi for Internet on the move, but I rapidly regretted not getting the 3G version from the outset. Apple implement cellular connectivity beautifully.

I now have a 3G iPad 2 and absolutely love it. For me, it's the integrated connectivity that really makes the iPad incredible.

Got the Wi-Fi only iPad 1 around the time the iPad 2 was released. Only costs me 500$. No regrets at all. There is always Wi-Fi everywhere at home. There's no way i'm taking something that expensive outside my house.

I have 2 generation 1 iPads. 1 Wifi only and 1 3G.

I don't use the 3G much, but when I do I need it. I hate paying the monthly service, but it has saved me more than once and ultimately has proved valuable. I have found myself lacking free wifi with the wifi only and wishing I have tethering or other options.

I guess it depends on where you use it and your access to free wifi. I do not have Comcast, Timearner or Cablevision so I do not get access to those hotspots. I don't frequent the palaces where I can get regular free access.

If I were at a university or spent a lot of time where I had free wifi access it would make a huge difference. At home I am like both equally but when I travel I need 3G. But as I stated, if I was in the free wifi enironment then Wifi only would most liekly be sufficient for me.

GPS can come from tethering too

3G for these three letters, if nothing else: GPS.

I can't say this is the right answer for me, but I see what you're getting at. I only travel every two months or so, so I am normally around wifi, thus have the wifi only model. I've never wished I had more, ok maybe 32gb would be nice so that I could put a few more high res videos on here for the long trips, but I digress. I enable tethering when I am on the road, AT&T prorates the both the 4GB of data and the extra $20 per month for when I only travel a few days at a time. When you tether to your iPhone, the GPS location data is also passed through the Bluetooth tether, so the extraordinarily rare (for me) wish for GPS is far from worth the 3G up front and monthly (albeit not contractually) costs.

Like one of the first comments said, it entirely depends on how and when you think you will need it.

Verizon 3G was way faster than the free hotel wifi on my last trip.
Also used it in the car for navigation.
Very glad I got 3G!

Bought a 16gb with 3G, wish I would of bought the 32gb wifi..

I'm up for trading people :D

Unless you are a business man I see no reason to need 3G on your iPad if you have an iPhone 4. Which is why I only have wifi

For one paying for a contract for the iPhone and iPad seems stupid for me. I only need to use the iPad at home anyway. I use the same things on my iPhone when not at home.

I have a tiny bit of regret buying the wifi only version of the iPad 1.

Sometimes when I go somewhere I think about taking it with me but then I think, my phone is enough as I can access the web anywhere.

I considered buying a miff and am still considering it since you can unlock them and use a payg sim and connect multiple devices to them but I hate having to carry more devices than absolutely necessary.

But then I think that if I did get the 3G iPad, i would be paying for another data package just for that device.

Wifi iPad 2. No regrets. Mostly gets used at home, and often with apps that don't require Internet access anyway. Couldn't see the point in spending the extra and then paying even more for a data plan on top of that.

WOW this has actually been pretty interesting reading... and a varied mixed batch of answers and options, which is great.

So far no one really regrets purchasing the model they went for originally. Some who purchased one model for the first iPad have changed to the other for the second depending on the usage.

I however right now, am still a little torn... HOWEVER leaning towards 3G more...
After research the last couple of days with iPad data plans and stuff (in the UK) there seems to be cheap(ish) options, and for myself Pay&Go would work best, that way the 3G capability is always there if and when I need it. I will be traveling around the US early next year and think having the iPad2 3G would be a great assets for when traveling. There was the option of wifi (saving the £100 extra for 3G) and if I wanted to connect go and purchase a miff -- but cheapest I could find on Pay & Go was £80... and for that extra £20 it means its all built in and not needing to carry that extra little device.

Reading that back looks like I'm dead set on purchasing a 3G iPad2... I guess I'll wait until September 17th for my birthday to see what I burt out in the Apple Store.

Not taking the iPad out of the house kind of defeats the purpose of the whole thing.

Not necessarily. My colleague bought one (the 16gb wireless only version) for her mom to use around the house. She is literally a PC idiot, but has no problem mastering the ipad. :D

I have a 64GB 3G iPad2 (AT&T) and I am very happy with it...I use the 3G often while traveling...couldn't be happier with it...

ipad 3G

Hi like the poster i live in the uk. purchased original iPad on day 0 ( yep apple delivered the day before the apple store had it!) 64gb and 3G. I use the 3G pretty much all day on 3'snetwork £15 for 10gb per month !! Works very well most of the time in fact faster than Starbucks or McD's free wifi, only on my home wifi network is it faster. The mapping and GPS is brilliant,( I drive for a living) of course you get that on iPhone 4, just a zillion times easier to utilise and see on the iPad.
Final analysis if you have 3G you can just pay as you go or not but you have the choice, wifi only you are totally screwed. You have too ask yourself is that worth the initial extra outlay?
Personally I would say yes BTW I have not used all of the 64GB and when I upgrade to the iPad 2 or 3 I may only get the 32gb 3G model

My first 5 (3 iPad, 2 iPad 2) were wifi. I used my 3GS to tether. This summer I got a Mifi from Verizon (picked it for the coverage, not the speed). That worked well. Came into some money and splurged for the 64GB 3G Verizon and transfered my data plan to it. No regrets. I dont use as much data as I expected, but I am glad it is there when I want it. My phone is AT&T with unlimited data, so I have options when it comes to internet connectivity :)
