Yep. And Apple is likely to cover those things, despite it explicitly warning that water damage is NOT covered under warranty.

But an IP67 rating does not guarantee any protection from those things. And it is amazing how people have taken a rating to mean such things.

All the IP 67 rating means, is that a laboratory was able to put a phone between 15 cm and 1m of static water for UP TO 30 min, without substantial damage caused by ingress of water, under controlled lab conditions. That is not a guarantee of anything.

If I buy a car with a 5-star front impact crash rating, I should know that that is no guarantee that I am going to achieve those same results if I have a car crash. And it surely doesn't mean I should start driving like an idiot. It means that based on a controlled test, in a laboratory where they test car crashes, they were able to achieve certain results. They are guidelines, people.
It appears you're the only rational person left in this place.

I deal with IP ratings every single day when ordering equipment for assembly lines, robots, etc. that I design. IP67 IN NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM MEANS WATER PROOF. Neither does IP68. IP69 is required for anything that's going to be hosed off, steam cleaned, or deal with repeated submersion. Even at that point, IP69 does not mean you'd be covered under warranty if you took it swimming. It means it passed the required tests in a controlled lab setting to receive that rating. Plenty of IP69 rated equipment still gets labeled water resistant.

It's entirely up to the manufacturer to decide if they want to call something water proof, and warranty it. Apple never called the phone water proof. For reasons I'll never understand, feel free to shower with your phone, just know that you're taking a risk with no liability on Apple's part.

I have surround in my shower with built-in shelves. When I had my 7+ I placed it on the shelf a couple of times. I would only do it occasionally though. I take hot showers so I'd be concerned with the steam over time.

Oh look Johnny, we are in the land of judgementals. The place where you go to find all of the internet pals telling others and passing judgement on others of what they do with their equipment, even though it has zero effect on them and could have just answered the close ended question by the OP.

To the op: I haven't taken it in my actual shower, however I have taken it into the water park with my daughter with no issues. I personally would be concerned with steam over time, not direct water flow.

Stop judging me.

Best post I have read all day.
[doublepost=1476904153][/doublepost]I keep it in my room while I shower, but I have a bluetooth waterproof speaker in the shower so if anyone has an emergency and calls I can still talk to them while wiping away the dirt. 😉

I'm guilty. I like to stream the news and watch live ticker symbols in the morning. I certainly don't have 20 minutes to spare and watch TV before leaving in the morning (I like my sleep too).

It's convenient and in my case it sits on a shelf above the water. Not concerned about water vapor (steam) penetration. So, it's basically a $99 risk (with Applecare+) that unlocks a little functionality that didn't exist before.

If you understand the risks and the limitations of IP67 ratings – do whatever you want.

sometimes i do when i am listening to music on it.. ill just set it on the edge of the tub behind the shower curtain..it doesnt get wet at all, only a tiny splashes here and there.. i dont take steamy showers and i am usually pretty quick so ita not that big of a deal for me.. when i am done showering, i usually dry off my hands first before grabbing it to set on the bathroom sink.. ive done this about 4-5 times and no issues here.

Heh. What a silly thread! 🙂

Biking in rain does not equal showering with phone. (jets have a lot more pressure than rain drops - sorry!)

Also - the pron and shower topic - you guys DO know that most of your wives / girlfriends have a very intimate relationship with the massaging shower head, right? 🙂 Imagine they now have something to watch while getting off? 😉

Just saying. 🙂

I die a little inside when I read the "Oh my Christ... how DARE you use your phone differently than me?! You must be of inferior intelligence level and social status than I am because of your inability to think EXACTLY the way I do! Instead of ignoring this thread, I'm going to take 45 seconds and point out how STUPID you are. That'll make me feel better about myself. Maybe my wife won't leave me now because I sleep better at night by putting others below me on the internet" posts.

/end rant.

P.S. - I take my phone in the shower. Spotify doesn't have an Apple Watch app and sometimes when I'm getting ready in the morning, I like to listen to different things. Never does it go under the jet. Just on the shelf so I can change songs at will. Haters, please crucify me.

I take showers with my phone for music, but I put it in one of those water resistance pouches, like this one:

This is a pretty reasonable stance. Someone who does it, knowing full well the consequences (not an unreasonable expectation based on a bad interpretation). and is prepared with Applecare+.

There is no reason to hate you or crucify you. You are free to do what you want with your device. it would only be a problem if you either lied to Apple to get a replacement, or blamed Apple for water damage should it happen, citing the IP67 rating.

It would be like my buying a Volvo for safety features, and running it in a demolition derby. I am totally free to do that, so long as I am not doing so thinking I will be safe from any injuries and Volvo owes me anything if I damage my car.

People should be able to do whatever they want with their personal property. So long as they aren't harming others with it.

At the same time this is a discussion and generally you have to expect different opinions being shared. Let's be honest here, nobody really cares if you take your phone into the shower with you. It's not like anybody will know either unless you admit it and offer it as a point in discussion.

To the IP-rating literalist crowd: yes we get it, it means something very specific.
No, it doesn't mean people are forbidden to personally use said ratings to personally INFER something.

"This kevlar vest is rated to survive a gun shot in the chest but be careful with BB-guns since they're not part of the rating process".

Yeah, no. Hence the need for a "Let's share our experiences" thread like this. The question is legitimate.
That said, of course Apple would not be liable for damages and people need to understand this.

Swim or shower with your iPhone. Don't come running back here and complain that your phone doesn't work no more and you're mad at Apple for not replacing it. Dumb dumb dumb.

It's like I've said before; just because I'm wearing a bulletproof vest doesn't mean I'd walk around trying to get shot on purpose.

I shower and take baths with my phone (the bathtub is shorter than the IP67 rating depth so I can submerge my phone). So far, no problems except that the speakers don't work and the home button is very glitchy

If anybody showers with their iPhone 7 I really do hope the water resistance fails. What a stupid and pointless thing to attempt.
I too don't understand the need for a phone in the shower, but there's no need to hope for failure because of that!
"What a stupid and pointless" attitude.
