That's what I don't get, what advantage exactly does a physical disk hold? I have to store the bloody thing on a shelf taking up space needlessly, when I want to watch it I have to physically find the damned thing, put it in a drive, navigate stupid menus which inevitably tell me I'm not allowed to skip them.

The whole experience just stinks, until there's a reasonably priced way of paying for movies to download DRM free in a format that's easy to play on any platform I'm simply not going to pay for movies.

I have 14TB of storage and a 21Mbit connection. I'm happy to store them and even happier to watch things on demand.

What hollywood doesn't seem to understand is that people won't pay extra for more hassle and an inferior experience.

I have four problems with downloading movies:

1) The price. Why does it cost the same (or often more) to buy a movie on iTunes as it does to buy the DVD or Blu Ray?

2) The quality. The picture quality of a streamed or downloaded movie is nothing in comparison to a Blu Ray.

3) The time for delivery. An "HD" iTunes movie is often 2GB+ - those of us with slower internet connections do not want to wait the 5 or 6 hours this can often take.

4) No backups. If I am buying a movie on iTunes, I want to be able to download it again and again in future. We need a service like Steam for movies. I'm surprised no one has done it yet.

If I buy, I buy Blu-ray. There was a time where I'd leave for lunch every Tuesday and buy the newest releases that interested me. I had hundreds of DVDs and about 50% went unwatched. Of those about 90% were watched once. Now I try to only buy what I know I'll watch repeatedly. I have downloaded a few but I have not jumped on board with buying movies and downloading them as fast as others. I usually rent those.

I only buy movies that I know I will watch again and that I really like. No use spending the money on a DVD that will sit around and never get watched again. The last movie I bought was inception because that movie is just amazing and I knew I would want to watch it again

I only buy DVD's of my favorite movies and only if it's one of those "Limited Edition" ones. I'm a sucker for those.

I rent a DVD from Netflix first (not new movies, older stuff, it's still mostly all new to me anyway). First viewing is usually full screen on a notebook computer.

Then if I like it a lot, I try for an iTunes download for my repeat viewings. If they don't have it, I might request it. If they don't ever seem to end up having it even after a year goes by, I might try to buy a DVD, used or new, usually from Amazon. I'd rather buy the download.

My BluRay experience is nil, I'm sure it's great (and sure that the iPad HD experience is great too). I'm just not a connoisseur of film quality, and I don't have any TVs or big monitors anyway. When I buy a download, my repeat viewings even on a notebook are likely to be scrunched up in a corner of the screen into a window the size of an iPod touch screen, or else I watch them on an iPod touch or iPad. I have some TV show series downloads. Those I like to watch on a video-capable iPod in a speakerdock on top of the microwave while I'm waiting for something in the kitchen to boil or cool or whatever.

If the film/TV show I want is available on iTunes in HD, I'll take that instead of DVD, and I would take Blu-Ray if my Mac could play it.

Otherwise, I'll buy DVD. I just bought Gran Torino actually. And most operas aren't even available on blu-ray or itunes yet anyway.

I buy only those movies that singularly grab my attention. Departures was the last one I bought, and it was some time ago.

I may buy the Pirates box set when they're all done with those.

I have never bought DVDs, but I must confess I still buy CDs. At home, abroad, from street musicians, concerts.....I must have thousands of CDs. Admittedly, most of them are subsequently ripped into my iTunes collection, but I think it is one of life's great pleasures to contemplate a collection of CDs in a nice wooden case, rather than simply downloading stuff onto a computer. And I still love that slick little click which you can hear as a CD slots home....

Cheers

For me to buy a DVD it has to be very special.

Superman, star wars, LOTR, etc.

I buy them so one day my grand children can see what some of my favorites where. Who knows maybe one day big brother will ban these and only physical media will be left.

not so much anymore, but once in a while I'll buy one if I think I'll watch it at least several times over a longer period of time.....even then I'll end up buying a used disk from amazon

I buy lots of previously viewed DVDs and rip them on my MBP ... movies like Godfather, Pulp Fiction, etc

I haven't bought a DVD brand new in store in ages. Unless it's a thrift store or Christmas is coming up. But as of recently I'm only getting blu ray packs. As in BR, DVD, and digital copy. That way I cover all the bases. And so far I have one of this(Tron Legacy) and I had to pay more because 3D came with it(Don't even have a 3D tv ).

As for CD's I always buy unless I want the album immediately.

I only purchase BD, as the PQ is far superior to DVDs. I have many choices as to how I consume BD: rip to watch on OSX, or watch the discs via bootcamp. If I really wanted to watch a movie/doc/series that is only available on DVDs, my local library has an extensive collection so I can rent it.

The BD/DVD combos I buy, I give the DVDs to my brother as I will unlikely to watch them.

I watch a movie only once so I never buy DVDs. 20€ for a DVD costs more than going to the cinema, and it's the same because I will only watch it once anyway. The same applies to Blu-Rays, I never buy them. The last time I bought a DVD/BR was last Christmas when I bought a concert DVD for my dad.

To be honest, I don't watch much movies and the ones I watch are usually coming from the TV or recorded. I prefer TV shows, they never disappoint :p

I still buy DVD's & CD's

Mainly because I can get them cheaper in the stores than downloading them, and also because downloading is so slooooooooow

I do rip them into itunes also

I still purchase DVDs and Blue Rays. I like the $5 bin at Walmart for movies I want to see but don't want to pay top dollar for.
Netflix is an option if I figure out how to do it through my Blue Ray player. This would be good for casual movie watching, but for movies I really like or TV series, I want to buy the disc and own it.
I rip it to watch on my iPad or iPhone.

I don't buy movies/TV shows in any form with any frequency, but they're always on DVD, same as I buy 99% of my music on CD. I like to have the hard copy that doesn't require backing up--I can then make a digital rip (of either) for easy portability. It's a win-win.

Blu-Ray would be nice, but I don't see the need to go sink the money into it, when an upscaled DVD looks fine to my eyes (I've seen both, and I know/can see that BR is better...just not enough to justify the $$)

going to see a movie in theaters is 20 bucks minimum for my wife and I. Buying a new release Blu-Ray is usually 20 bucks (during it's first week of release).
So we usually buy Blu-Rays and enjoy the movie more on our home theater plus have a physical copy that can be sold later if need be.

I'm a junkie for special features as well, so I'd rather have the disc than stream content

Buying physical discs is usually cheaper than digital downloads. So, If I'm buying, I always get the physical copies.Though, I only buy when there are sale prices or purchase used discs. For movies that I absolutely love, I only buy Blu-ray. For nice to have but not that important movies, I get the DVD. Digital downloads are still too slow, low quality and take up too much storage space to be worthwhile.

I'll download tv shows that I missed on tv (or DVR). I don't usually buy tv shows. But if I do, I'll buy the physical disc.

Rarely do I buy a DVD and if I do it's something for my kids. We have DVD players for long trips in the car and such.

I'm generally a watch something once kind of guy. It's just tough for me to watch something a second time when there is so much new stuff I'd rather spend that time watching. Thus, buying a DVD is usually a waste of money for me.
