As a teacher, I have used it from time to time for when I want to show a document or article on the interactive whiteboard (such as newspaper articles or pupils' work). So I just take a picture of the document, then project it using the VGA adaptor.

The photo turns out pretty well. Now if only there were some way to annotate on photos... :)

Try Adobe Ideas - I it might be free (can't recall)

Try a scanner app such as Scanner Pro. You can export as a PDF and annotate in one of the PDF annotation apps such as PDF Expert.

Only if I want it on my iPad at that moment. Otherwise my 4s takes much much better pictures than my iPad 2

I have and they look great. I even used the video recorder to document a basketball tournament the boy was in. Looks great !

Big difference: iPhone camera is much better. I very rarely use the iPad camera, but use the iPhone lots for photos and some videos. The iPhone's "camera" ergonomics aren't ideal though, and I've missed pictures fiddling to get the camera launched and find the volume up button to click the shutter.

Uh, not sure about this, I've taken pictures of items with both iphone 4S and ipad and the ipad takes far, far better shots. I actually use it for most of the pics i need to take if i have it on me, rather than the iphone...

A little tough to believe unless you're willing to clarify what you mean by "far, far better." You're essentially saying that iPhone 4 camera is better than the iPhone 4S since the 4 and the iPad 3 share the same optics. That goes against what all major reviews of both the iPhone 4S and iPad 3 have said.

Here's how I made my determination: take a phone bill or piece of paper with lots of details, put it on a desk, and take a photo from about 3 feet away so that the edges of the paper line up with those of the frame on the screen. The ipad shot will provide much better detail - I can read the text on the page while the iphone pic is blurry and unreadable. I am not a camera person by any means, but pictures taken with the ipad come out much clearer and more readable than the iphone. (Maybe the larger size of the ipad allows for a larger lens?)

Perhaps my iphone camera is damaged, i dont know but while it is better than my blackberry, it is not equal to my ipad 3.

I never thought that I would use the camera on the iPad, but I now use it quite a bit in unconventional ways. I take pictures - really more like captures - to help me keep things organized, as reminders, etc. The large format makes it very easy to pull up and view these "picture notes" I am a dedicated DSLR user for real pictures, but this iPad camera has become very useful to me and has saved me a lot of time.

On the iPhone, did you tap the screen to focus on a particular spot on the paper?

No i just waited a few seconds to allow it to focus on the paper, and then once it stopped doing so and settled in, I snapped the pic. Both the ipad and the iphone will do this.

Details always seem more clear on my iPhone if I tap somewhere on the screen for it to focus on.

Comes in handy when I want to take on-the-spot pictures then upload via an app. Craigslist, etc,.

Have a look at penultimate or notability

I use it around the house a lot take pictures of our dog all the time lol then I use toaster photo to edit photos

Used it a couple times only to play around with. I have my iPhone 4, DSLR and P&S for taking real pics. That plus the smart cover on my iPad gets in the way whenever I try to take pics. The camera on the iPad is simply a nice-to-have for me.

i find the camera on the ipad3 really good !
i use it all the time in marine fishkeeping forum , selling on eBay, etc,
i use photo bucket app.
and was utterly surprised abut how good the video quality was ! :)
excellent kit..cant speak for ipad 2 never owned one

It's hard to take your conclusion seriously when you consider this, regarding the iPhone 4S Vs the iPad 3:
5-element-lens vs. 4
Wider f/2.4 aperture.
60% more pixels
72% more sensitive
Greatly improved infrared filter
Improved backside illumination and color accuracy
For video, image stabilization

You have got to be joking or your iPhone 4S's camera is broken.

I use the rear camera on mine a lot. Not every day, but several time a week. I’m an engineer and the camera comes in very handy at work.

Taking pictures of notes written on a whiteboard.

Walking a jobsite with AutoCad floor plan drawings and being able to snap pictures of the building and making notes without needing to fish out another device.

I can take pdfs of a building design meeting and myself and the others attending are able to mark up changes on the ipad and email it to outside vendors/ contractors right then during the meeting and continue to make changes if needed. When done making changes or notes, I can email it right to our CAD people to redraw.

Someone was using an iPad to film a kids baseball game the other night and I gotta say it looks plain silly holding that thing up.

Good to know, thanks. After looking at the tech specs on apple's site, the iPad3 has a 5MP camera while the 4S has an 8MP. TIL

its more so how well the ip4s captures light and blocks out IR.

try holding it down on the paper to lock the focus :) much better

Anyone else notice that the camera app UI is different than the "take photo" feature within iMessage? The latter seems like its straight from the iPhone, whereas the actual Camera app has a UI more tailored towards the iPad with the "thumb shutter" button when holding the iPad in landscape. When you take a picture from iMessage, that button doesn't appear. You only get that one at the bottom.

Why they would put 2 different UI's for taking pictures on the same device is so weird to me.

I use it to record video of my runs with my dog. It's an invaluable tool, because I can review it immediately on a big screen if something went wrong during the run. And with a free app I found, I can play the video in slow motion and draw on it etc. to really get into details.

We might look silly holding up an iPad to record videos, but I don't give a damn because it is such a great tool to better myself.

What a rebel! :D

But seriously, I am in Arizona too--and maybe you run with your dog at night or around dusk/dawn--but the iPad is not very good in the bright Arizona sun. In fact I'd say the iPhone is marginally better in that respect.

Now regarding running while recording video, I think more than looking silly there is the issue of holding such a large ungainly device while doing it. I can't imagine doing it one-handed.

As for viewing iPhone 4S videos on the iPad the camera connection kit is great for that. But you do need to have it and a sync cable with you to go straight from iPhone to iPad.
