I hate to break it to people but "one handed use" is a myth. This was never something based on fact, it is something that was created by people on message boards trying to justify why the industry is going with bigger phones and Apple was lagging behind. The truth of smartphone use (including the iPhone) is that it was ALWAYS a two handed device.

This person knows whats going on.

I myself noticed that the only time I usually "one hand" my phone is when I grab it out of my pocket to check the time. Or causally scrolling through Twitter. Thats about it.

(emphasis mine)

I hate to break it to people, but "one handed use" is an incredibly common modality and one that adds a tremendous amount of functionality to a mobile device.

Ever since the announcement, I've been paying very close attention to how I use my 5S. It is incredibly rare for me to do things with two hands on it. I use it almost exclusively one handed, and this includes texting. I am not alone in this.

It's great that there are people out there that always have two hands available to fiddle with their device, but many of us often have that other hand occupied, or prefer the more casual stance of manipulating the phone with one hand.

It's not a myth, and he doesn't know what's going on for a sizable percentage of current iPhone users.

I type one handed if needed, but majority of the times I type with two hands. It's much easier and faster and after I'm done, I can use my time to do something else. No need to type with one hand and look down at my keyboard and hope I don't walk into something or whatnot

It depends. If my hands are free, i'll text with both. But when i drive, smoke, drink coffee, etc i'll text with one hand.

I text a lot faster with one hand than I do with two hands. No idea why. Sometimes, I can actually text accurately with one hand and not look at the keyboard at all.

Been a long time since I could accurately text one-handed. Ever since phones had touchscreens my accuracy went way down.

Depends. If I'm at work then I have a keyboard so I naturally use both hands on that.

When I'm out and about and have a table or something then i'll typically rest the phone on there and type with one hand, but if there's nothing to rest it on then i'll usually hold the phone with two hands and type with both thumbs. I'm terrible at it :p

Two hands, I text so much faster when using two.

Now if I'm laying in bed or something just one but I'm usually just scrolling through MR or Instagram

Almost exclusively one handed. Although ironically I went to instinctively type this two handed, possibly as I'm led upside down.

I imagine with the iPhone 6 I'll switch to a lot more two handed.

I can also text without looking one handed. Autocorrect does help though.

Funny that, I'm browsing and responding single handedly on this thread. I tend to do that 90% of the time. Guess I'm the exception that confirms the rule.

I mainly type with two hands. One if I only have one hand free, but that's pretty rare.

Reminds me. Out of curiosity, because I haven't seen it come up anywhere yet, I wonder whether the 6 Plus will support the split keyboard that the iPad has? That would be sweet.

Yes, there are many many times that one-handed phone operation can be done but for the most part then those functions will not be gone once you get a larger screen because 4.7" and 5.5" aren't as big as people think.

So I'm glad that Apple users are finally getting big screens because, as proven for years now on other platforms, if you're open minded enough to give it a try, bigger devices do improve the user experience.
Agreed.

Even BlackBerry QWERTY devices revolved using two-hands and those usually had screens under 3 inches. The one-handed texting existed with numeric flip phones, sliders, and Nokia candybar phones. I'm using two hands as I type this and the phone is similarly sized to the iPhone 6. When I had a BlackBerry Bold 9000, I typed with two hands.

One-handed use is an overrated complaint from whiners you simply can't accept a large phone.

Most of my texting is done one handed. If I am stood on a train I have to hold on with one hand and use my phone with another. Again if I am out with my baby daughter and carrying her as she can't walk, I use my phone with one hand. It's going to be tricking with the new iPhone so I best adapt pronto lol. Just read people on here saying one handed use is a myth.... Errrr no it's not ;)

No it's not.

It's a perfectly reasonable way of using a mobile device. Sure, just as there's a lot of benefit from having a larger screen, there's also a huge amount of benefit/freedom from only needing a single hand to do most things. As I've said earlier in this thread, since the keynote, I've been very conscious about how I use my 5S and it's almost exclusively one handed.

This isn't me whining or not accepting a large phone, it's me (and many others) pointing out that we like using our phone with one hand, it confers a lot of benefit, and there's a legitimate concern that the larger devices will remove that benefit from us. Yes, we'll get bigger screens that also have their own appeal, but that doesn't change the fact that requiring two hands for most functions can be limiting in many day-to-day scenarios.

Considering apple has made a function specifically for improved single handed use I'm glad they understand their customers unlike the op and others who think us single handed users are whining. Btw I'd like some cheese and crackers with my wine :)
