My home button is being faulty. Most likely from lint. The button is not being able to be depressed fully. Just got back from the store and guess what. Water indicator is off. So it was a no go on a replacement. Smart move on apples part. Bastards! Hopefully my elliglbilty for a 3gs will come up sooner than latter. I've had my phone for 11 months. Any guesses? Christmas time or will it be next June?

Well apple does replace for cracks I've replaced my 3g for cracks 4 times. The first time a few weeks after launch. The second right before Christmas... The next time in feburary and the last time was last week after getting my 3gs. The 3g had cracks near the volume switch and dust under the screen.

The guy took my phone looked at the cracks and the dust and never checked for water damage. The other times they never checked for water damage either. Didn't pull out that tool. So for the OP. I would go to the apple store and show them your cracks. Also my advice go to the apple store in an affluent neighborhood you'll get better treatment. Atleast with my experience.

I am going to the store tomorrow to see about getting my 3G replaced. It has the common hairline cracks around the camera since I bought it at launch. It is also cracked at the dock connector and appears to have air bubbles beneath the glass. I figured that I better check now before the warranty is up.

Did you make an Genius Bar appointment online? It will save you waiting around for a free window to look at your iPhone.

You should also check that your liquid sensors are not tripped:

They have been very busy since the iPhone 3GS Launch.

Yeah, I created an appointment today.

Thanks for the link. From what I can tell, it doesn't look like the sensor is tripped. Looks silver. I guess that is OK.

First, you don't know that the OP dosen't take care of their phone just b/c a water sensor has been tripped. That topic has been discussed around here ad nauseum, and it is pretty clear that those sensors can be set off be ambient moisture, which is not the fault of the owner.

This doesn't make sense. I've brought my iPhone into the bathroom with me when I take a shower, and being in a STEAM FILLED ROOM never set off any of the water sensors on my phone. If the phone is so sensitive that ambient moisture in a room can set it off, then surely a steam filled room would set off the sensors, no? Actually, no. I've had several iPhones, none of the sensors had ever been activated.

Second, the cracked case is a totally separate issue from the sensors. I have never read anywhere where Apple will refuse to deal with any other issue on the phone which is unrelated just b/c the sensor has been tripped.

They are separate issues, especially if the Genius did not document a cracking case issue as part of the visit where the tripped sensor was discovered.

You should listen to logic. If the water sensor is tripped, THE WARRANTY ON THE PHONE IS AUTOMATICALLY VOID. Once the warranty is void, Apple is under no circumstances obligated to replace, repair, or even examine the phone after they realize the phone is not covered. If they look at the phone for one issue and see that the phone is not under warranty, they will give it back to you and say "sorry water sensor lol kthxbai" and not help you.

I've been dealing with repairs with Apple for 5 years. I know the warranty policy backward and forward, and I know that in his case, he will be turned away unless he is willing to pay.

Sounds to me like someone wants an easy/cheap upgrade

Exactly.

I managed to get to Tier 2 and get them to upgrade me to a 3G S 16GB Black, only because I had to undergo several repairs and replacements to my iPhone 3G. But I was still under warranty.

Yeah that perfectly fine unlike this guy drying to bring a water damaged phone in for a cheap swap for a 3gS haha

The problem with this idea is that the warranty is VOID. Once the liquid sensors are tripped your warranty is VOID. So if you bring it in for any other issue, 99.999% of the time the Apple Genius tech will be forced to tell you that the iPhone is now Out of Warranty and the best option for you is the OWS program and you get to pay $199 for a refurbished iPhone or in the case of the iPhone 3GS a whitebox "new" unit until the refubished pipeline is stocked with actual refubished iPhone 3GS units.

Dave

Will this $199 program be valid after the warrantee is not?

The $199 program is the next step when the warranty is void. I was in the Apple Store today and a lady smashed her screen. They gave her an option: let us repair the phone, replace the phone, or if you're eligible for an upgrade, you can purchase an iPhone 3G S.

I'm not suprised you didn't break somehing in the Jack. Did you even read the warnings on the page?

This eject tool cannot put into your earphone slot. (this message was put on 19 Aug 2008 8:32am HK Time, GMT +8.00)

UPDATE: I called Apple today thinking the worst they can say is no so i call them up and at the prompt i say warrantee support. i get forwarded to this nice lady who told me that cracking is a defect in the phone and that they would set me up for a replacement. Then I told her about my water sensors and she said that this was a known defect ( like a broken record but Im not complaining!) and that she would set up the appointment for tomorrow. I'll keep you guys updated... I love Applecare!!!
(And i guess it was my turn to get lucky ;) )

I think they only put that there just incase something bad happens. because gizmodo says you can use it as a cover

Good luck tomorrow and make sure that you are on-time for your appointment and that you are polite. Please don't go there and announce that the Apple Care rep said you get a warranty exchange. Just let the discussion unfold. The Genuis gets to make the call (your iPhones future is in the hands of the Genius Bar) and once the Genius tech updates your record to indicate "liquid" damage, your warranty is Void.

Just to clarify after reading this discussion, are you guys talking about Applecare as the warranty in question, or the limited 1-year warranty on the phone that comes with the phone? Because I haven't bought Applecare, but I could still splurge if this is an issue. My husband is advising against Applecare; he has the 1st gen iPhone still, and when he got it, the phone was dropping calls constantly, so he took it into the store and they exchanged it without the Applecare. Can you please clarify? Thanks!

Applecare extends the 1 year warrantee to last for 2 years
