I don’t know this but do they just repair the glass or replace the whole iPhone?

I assumed the latter for the price of 549

If not I would demand it?

I’ve dropped many a phone with many a case and been fine

All until official leather caused my 7+ to shatter

I’ve dropped my 7+ tens of tens of times with a heavy duty Rhinoshield bumper or a half decent spiegen and it’s been fine operationally

The only iPhone I’ve ever dropped was the 6. Dropped it three times, the last time with a broken screen. Bought a case. No problems since. Damn slippery bastard.

My V30 would break. Pretty much any glass backed device would break. Treat this like you would a laptop, do you expect to drop it with no repercussions?

Yes, they take your phone and give you a replacement.
But that's not the point.
They're taking back your old working phone with the broken back glass and then repair it.
Is that back glass and repair process worth $550? No way.
Do you feel that back glass plate is worth $550 to repair?

Re: back glass replacement price: per iFixit's teardown, not easy to replace the glass as it is really glued in and the camera bump is pretty much impossible to remove.

After all of our careful Jimmying, we're still stuck: Unlike the iPhone 8's single piece rear panel, the camera bump overlaps the rear glass, and is meticulously welded to the metal frame beneath.

Even with any possible special equipment Apple has to do a real replacement ala their front panel replacement machine (forget what they call it), much trickier job with extra parts on the rear. So see the extra cost. Is is still highway robbery? Perhaps.

Good grief people. Buy a case. There is no gate if you put a dam case on it. I spent $35 on an Otterbox Symmetry before I even had the dam phone. Open box. Put phone in Otterbox. Life is good.

It’s fairly simple. Good lord.

there are lots of things in this world that can be fragile under special circumstances. eggs, christmas ornaments, human bones, automobiles, relationships....phones are generally not fragile when used as prescribed.

the difference between iphone x fragilegate and samsung exploding battery gate is that exploding battery gate occurred during normal use. breaking the back glass or front glass of an iphone x will not occur during normal use, you have to either decide to break the glass and take action to do so, or, by accident drop it where there is a risk of breakage. that risk cannot be out-engineered when humans are involved.

individuals are benefitted by being able to choose their own personal sense of risk acceptance, and fortunately Apple as well as an unlimited open market has respided with a plethora of risk mitigation add-one suitable for the clumsy or just those who are extremely adverse to risk.

i’ll use the phone naked like i always have since model 1, enjoy it for what it is.., th first scratch hurts the most but after than anxiety or even thinking about the polish fades away for me... i’m more interested in what the phone does after the newness wears off and les about how scratch or ding free i’ve managed to keep it, it that’s just me.

tl:dr -nobody would put up with an unbreakable phone.

I can see millions of lawsuits on the horizon. Do you?

Also, since iPhone X Plus will be made from the same materials, Fragilegate is not going anywhere anytime soon

I fear for my iPhone X, I'm thinking of buying the Folio case despite its high price :(

Seriously?!? The only thing Fragile around here is your logic!

As for *Gate, the only *Gate here is..... ClumsyGate ..... I can't JuggleGate and...... I'm-Not-Very-CarefulGate.

Lawsuit?!? it's about time more people take responsibility for their own actions and stop looking for ways to sue someone else over their own failings. But, I guess that's the way society is today....sadly

I agree.
I know the back glass is where everything is glued on.
But that $550 price is serious highway robbery.

OP should be banned for wasting storage space and bandwidth on this thread

No such thing as too fragile. The only way you will break it is if you drop it and that will be a user error so stop looking for problems that aren’t there.
If I accidentally drive my Merc in to a wall, I am not going to sue Mercedes because the fender was too fragile to absorb the crash without damage. Jeez what a ridiculous post

Millions of lawsuits? Seriously? What is the cause of action? Millions of people suing Apple because glass breaks? Samsung devices spontaneously bursting into flames, that is a cause of action. iPhone X's breaking when dropped because they are made of glass (as was advertised), not a cause of action.

Enjoy your phone. Just don't drop it.

Haha millions of lawsuits. Yes, glass breaks. Don't buy it if you drop your phones, or get AppleCare, or insurance through your provider. All options.

I just beat the hell out of my chicken. Stupid egg it laid broke when I dropped it. That'll learn him.

I love apple and the X but I have to say charging $549 freaking dollars if you damage the back glass is inexcusable.

I’m just waiting for someone to sue Apple because using an Apple product made him smile. Once.

You know putting -gate at the end of something doesn't mean it is an actual controversy. Its not more fragile than every other phone made of glass and metal.

Apple's repair prices are outrageous...but let's face it, all of Apple's prices are outrageous.
