1. Why do we need a separate app to access iCloud Drive?! It's redundant. It's part of the share sheet, does not need to be anymore than that.

2. No, we don't know this. You're presenting guesses as facts. Not the same thing. iCloud is already in finder in Mavericks. iCloud Drive is just an expansion of this. I'm not saying they will bring iCloud Drive to Mavericks, I'm just pointing out that until the announcement or at launch, we don't know for certain.

And I'm just pointing out the we already have all of the information we need to conclude this definitively....and this tactic of saying 'we don't know until release' is just your way of having an opposite stance to take in the discussion.

Its not coming to Mavericks. 10.9.5 has already been through about half a dozen beta builds (maybe more). It will be launching around the same time as everything else. It does not include iCloud Drive, and will not include iCloud Drive. What's done is done. 10.9.6 will not exist....this is the last update to Mavericks.

Yeah, the Mavericks idea would need to be beta tested and I would guess, would be far to time consuming to add in.

It also flies against Apple's philosophy of not adding KEY new features to an old OS when you're hard at work about to launch a NEW OS.

Do you think iCloud Drive will be disabled in iOS 8 GM?

No, we do not have any info confirming this. You're guessing. Stop passing guesswork off as definitive facts.

It may not be coming to Mavericks, but as it stands, we have no information to confirm either way. There's a 10.9.5 coming, so you never know. iCloud Drive is only an extension of the existing iCloud functionality that's in Mavericks already. There's more chance of this than Continuity and handoff.

There would definitely be some evidence in the 10.9.5 betas of iCloud Drive, which there isn't. As said previously 10.9.5 is likely the last Mavericks major update.

It does not make any sense to add feature support to an old OS when it's one of the reasons to upgrade in the first place. Mountain Lion didn't get iCloud Keychain, Snow Leopard didn't get full iCloud integration, Mavericks is not getting iCloud Drive.

iCloud Drive will make its appearance in iOS 8.X alongside the release of Yosemite

I'm not saying it definitely will. I'm just making a point that the person I was quoting was treating it like definitive fact, claiming we have info confirming it, when we don't. If he has any confirmation, then share it, but he's avoided actually answering that.

It's unlikely to be in Mavericks, but unless he or I work for Apple, we cannot say definitively, until launch. We can only guess and give opinion. He was passing it off as fact.

Do you know what pedantic means?
You are making an argument out of nothing, and at this point you stand on an empty point that "we don't know until its released."

Well, we don't know if Apple will change the Finder icon from Blue to Green until its "released" either....but that makes about as much sense as you do right now.

I know what pedantic means, but you still seem to not understand that opinion is not fact. Also, you claimed we had info confirming what you're saying was fact. I'm still waiting for you to provide this factual info.

My point is more substantial than yours. Your point is guesswork and opinion being palmed off as fact.

There may or may not be support. There's weight to both sides. Yes there's a history of no support, but on the other hand, most of the framework is already there, it's just an extension to icloud documents, which Mavericks has access to already.

I am pretty sure when you upgrade to iCloud Drive it states that you need iOS 8 or OS X Yosemite to access it.

https://www.apple.com/ios/ios8/icloud-drive/

"To upload your files to iCloud, simply drag them into the iCloud Drive on your Mac running OS X Yosemite or PC running Windows 7 or later."

Sorry this is slightly off topic, but before upgrading and "losing access" to the files, is there a way to get off what is in the current setup? I would hate to enable it and lose my stuff.

My understanding is that Documents and Data syncing will work fine with iCloud Drive enabled. The reason it doesn't work now and you lose access to your synced data is because iCloud Drive is being housed on beta servers. Once iCloud Drive is out of beta, all you data will migrate / work properly.

Ah, perfect, thanks.

A lot of people have mentioned that once people upgrade to iCloud Drive, documents on other devices are not available until they are upgraded to iOS 8/Yosemite. Since it's quite possible Yosemite won't be released until October (As per Mavericks), do you think it's possible that they'll disable iCloud Drive until then so that people don't loose access to documents on the Mac. This would be in a similar fashion to what they did with iCloud Keychain last year. It was in all the iOS 7 beta's and was then removed from the GM until iOS 7.0.3 which added it back in along with numerous other fixes.

What do you think? I personally think it would be a good idea. Many 'juggles' would simply click 'ok' to upgrading to iCloud drive and could be left in a situation where they loose access to documents for potentially over a month. Do you think Apple will do it?

They "may" release 10.9.5 with iCloud Drive support until Yosemite comes out.
Just a guess.
They are working on iCloud drive for Windows, why not for previous versions of OS X?

This is nothing new. I could use photostream on my old Macbook Core 2 Duo booted into Windows 8, but couldn't run it on the same computer in Mac OS. Apple simply doesn't care about the older computers since they're a hardware company and want you to buy a newer and faster computer to have the experience they want you to have. And although you can usually get around these blocks, why bother? The truth is it doesn't run great, and you'd be better off simply selling your old hardware and upgrading. Some see it as cruel, but it's really always been the Apple philosophy. You're either with them and moving forward or behind and left out. Anyone uncomfortable with this would be better off with a company that isn't so bent on planned obsolescence.

Though it's truly the opposite with their iOS devices. Never in a million years would I have imagined the iPad 2 being supported into iOS 8. Simply jaw dropping. Makes those iPad 1 owners kick themselves in the gut even harder.

I'm not sure where that has anything to do with my response but I wasn't blocked from installing Yosemite on my 7 year old iMac, I'm surprised allows me to even power the machine on with it being obsolete and all.
I'm also one of those iPad one owners that decided not to punish myself, it also still works very well.

I am though upset with my home builder for not building my home with the same bells and whistles as newer homes, my car manufacturer for not looking into the future to put air conditioned seats in my wife's couple year old car, why did Thomas Edison create us an obsolete light bulb since it doesn't have WiFi or Bluetooth support natively, don't get me started on envelopes I could spend a whole day on complaining about how useless they are with that whole having to lick them thing, I can't understand how people who do this even live... and cash, we are still having to carry paper and sometimes metal currency the people that do that must just want to end themselves it's so horrific.

and no I do not believe iCloud drive will be disabled in iOS8 GM.

There is no way iCloud Drive will be disabled in the iOS 8 GM. App updates will start coming out that take advantage of that functionality right away.

No I don't think it will be, but it will be interesting to see how Apple deal with the launch and Mac syncing. Seems like they will just tell people to use the web version of iCloud drive until Yosemite launches.

Could Mavericks get iCloud drive 'Beta' as a separate application, that has a time limit on how long you can use it after Yosmeite comes out. I'm thinking like iMessage on lion. You may recall it was a separate download and it stopped working at a certain point and you had to upgrade to Mountain Lion to keep using it. Thus Apple will convince a heap of people to upgrade and people can still use iCloud drive.

Is everyone also forgetting that after Mountain Lion was released, that they added Gatekeeper to Lion??

Gatekeeper was a security thing though, so it made sense for Apple to give it to Lion, it wasn't really a major 'user' feature of the 10.8 upgrade. iCloud Drive is a big feature of the new OS's. The beta thing is interesting, we had FaceTime on Snow Leopard, Messages on Lion - the only thing that makes me think no is the level of integration. Messages and FaceTime were standalone apps, where as iCloud Drive is integrated at the system level, I can't see Apple putting in that much effort to update 10.9.

AFAIK there are no systems that can run 10.9 that can't run 10.10? And with the price tag why wouldn't you upgrade? A few weeks without iCloud Drive won't hurt anyone, and anyone who's using it now on their primary iCloud account shouldn't really have any complaints about inconsistency / issues. It's a pretty dumb move to be relying on the use of iCloud Drive at this current point, asking for trouble

I remember that Gatekeeper was one of the biggest ML features, but you are right that security is different.

Surely they could knock together a standalone app for iCloud drive?

Doesn't really need an app. iCloud is already there in finder in Mavericks. iCloud Drive is just an expansion of that.

But how then could they deliver a simple way so that they enable iCloud drive on Mavericks but can then disable it again when Yosemite comes out -as an incentive to get people to update.

That's the thing, the most simplistic way to get people to update is to hold it back. Allowing it in Mavericks would add an element of confusion, as it's meant to be a big new feature of Yosemite, having something there and then removing it will confuse the vast majority of users and also give Apple some negative feedback. The biggest incentive to upgrade is to have it only available in the upgrade.

I would love that have it available instantly, running iOS 8 on all my iOS devices but still 10.9 on my Macs, but from a general users point of view, the least confusing way and to get what Apple want (i.e. users on the latest OS) holding it back makes the most sense.
