I just bought my MBP on Sunday, love the machine. I work in a computer repair centre, not even the most expensive Sony vaio looks and feels as good as this machine does.

In terms of bang for buck it is a very very fast machine, i5 CPU and 4GB of RAM - it doesn't hang about.

I'm totally with what izero said, the mbp wasn't designed for you to go on facebook and a bit of word documents. It can do this with ease but its really meant for the heavy work. I could probably do with jus the macbook, but personally i love the looks of the mbp and the speed.

I bught mine for casual use, and I'd still say it's worth the money. :D

Just bought my 13' i5 and I love it. Money well spent. It's funny how I spent $1500 not including AppleCare on my Core Duo Blackbook in 06 and and $1395 with AppleCare this time around. I will be using this for the next 6 years.

it depends on what you are buying for the education discount. I got $100 off my MacBook Pro 13' i5 and around $70 something off for AppleCare.

No, they are not over priced.

Are they the best bang for the buck? No.
Are they a "pro" laptop? No.
The Dell Precision, HP Elitebooks or Boxx laptops are "pro" laptops
with half a dozen "pro" features unavailable with the MBP.

The MBPs are great premium consumer computers, at fair, premium prices.

Heck no, when I bought my MBP it was cheaper compaired to the MB. (At Best Buy, 21 months ago.)

Yes sure and I love it

Yes sure are the Macs overpriced if one compares it to a standard PC hardware. But I am willing to pay the price for it.

I also have a Rolex instead of a Fossil watch. Both show the time accurately and so the Rolex is massively overpriced. I was still willing to pay the price for it.

It does not matter how much you pay for something, but it is important what you get out of it personally.

I just love style and perfection and I am paying the price for it.

If you're really into fine watches, then why a Rolex? :D

Let's put it this way. If I had ton of money, I would enjoy this great machine even more.. Close to 2 grand, I love it but I am being overly protective of this laptop. It is just a device we need to work on stuff that we need to get done and sometimes it does get in the way because you are thinking about how expensive this thing is...

I think they are expensive, but the hardware sales have to support the software development. As such, I think the prices are fair.

absolutely. you're really paying the premium price for the operating system... how else are you supposed to run it (legally) on your computer? so while a 13" windows laptop costs $800, a similarly speced mbp will cost $1200+possible taxes.

design might be a nice thing, but the main purpose of the laptop is for you to get your tasks done.

I wouldn't say overpriced, I'd say they are priced at a premium. I bought my for casual use and some light, light photo editing. The main reason I bought a Mac was A) I was COMPLETELY sick of dealing with windows and all of its stupid hang-ups and B) The build of the computer is amazing.

While you can find cheaper laptops on the market, I noticed that as far is Apple is concerned, they only build the "best". They don't offer 2 million different configs. Just a couple and they are all very high quality. So to me, that means they know how to do a few things very well and stick to it.

They are not over priced.

A larger portion of the "value" however, is placed on the design and the fit & function, as opposed to actual computing power.

For PC laptops, a larger portion of your money is going towards the power.

R

Yes, overpriced, but not as much as most people think they are.

For the entry level models I would say they are about $200 higher than they should be, once you take into account the aluminum chassis, high quality screen, and magsafe.

In the higher end models, though, the difference is even more exaggerated.

No not at all!

When I was younger I was a PC user Toshiba-hp-Sony had higher end laptops from each company. Each one of them had major issues with in a year or two or whenever the factory warranty was expired. So I would just end up spending more and more money. I purchased a ibook thing was perfect for two years along with a powerbook sold them both had applecare. The new owners still use them to this day.

So when you compare money spent and long lasting product whats worth it to you?

I don't care who tells you what. The 15" is definitely overpriced. The 17" is right on the border of being overpriced. What saves the 13" is the fact that they managed to improve the spec without substantially increasing its price.

The 15" though? Come on now. If you can't tell that machine is overpriced looking at its specs on the high end compared to the low end 17", I don't know what to tell you. To copy someone I know, a blindfolded stuck in the basement asleep Stevie Wonder could see that. Problem is, Apple knows the 15" is really the most popular, even if it's not the highest selling.

After having used a variety of different Apple computers I can say that I understand where the extra money is going. They are charging you for the experience, not the machine. They basically are bundling Genius Bar appointments, AppleCare support staff, One-to-One time, Apple Store electricity and internet, IT to support the stores, etc. costs into the price of the hardware they sell. It feels like more than it really is for someone who doesn't avail themselves of any of that experience and just wants a computer.

Spec-wise, probably.
But all together from the body, screen, track pad, keyboard, service, battery life, hd video-camera, OS + the great specs (at least on 15") when you combine all that I would say it comes at a reasonable price. People tend to only compare the memory, gpu and cpu while comparing prices. I wouldn't pay 2k or even 1k for a computer if it came with the same memory, gpu and cpu if it was a in a crappy built plastic body, no keyboard lights, ugly, 2h battery life and garbage service (+ virus). So for someone who only prioritizes gpu, cpu and memory and nothing else it's pretty overpriced. What I will say though is that the upgrades are over priced for 200 I could get an ssd and keep my 500gb hdd.

They are border-line over priced perhaps, but I haven't saw any other PC laptop I'd rather have. I agree with other users that the current 2011 MBP are totally worth every cent. To me the only thing the MBP could use are IPS displays, but those are quite expensive at the resolution people want them to be. I want a laptop to be mobile, and inorder to be mobile it needs a few things

  • Light
    Thin
    Excellent Battery Life

Sure other computers have great battery life at the sacrifice of design as a 4 in battery pack awkwardly hangs out the rear. The MBP offers a device thats well built, (mine has been dropped to many times, and my bud's fell out of a car going 45 mph), and long lasting. I have a teacher that still has there working iBook and first gen Macbook Pro (2006) and she loves them and uses them everyday. Sure you can get 3 computers and some headache for the price of one Apple Laptop, but I like reliability and I love OSX. I don't think other Apple products are over priced at all though. iMacs pretty much the same once you've included OS and an IPS displays.

I don't think Apple products are perfect, and I do love my student discount and wouldn't mind them to be even cheaper, but I think the overwhelming quality of Apple products are worth the price.

No...

I wouldn't have purchased one if I felt they were overpriced. I do think they are expensive, but I look at it as an investment in quality.

sometimes the price drives consumers.. like one tree may be 20 dollars and another 45 at another higher end tree store.. some people will buy the 45$ tree because they think it may live longer.. or something that was a horrible analogy but a lot of people just want to buy the most expensive because they think its the best. and in this case a mac is the best =). The fact that Apple writes and produces everything for their own Platform makes it beautifully synchronized. Everything runs smoother this way. PC just takes this sony part that toshiba part this hitachi part and BAM theres a 500 pc that is really fast for the first three months. then its fast in 6 and in 9 months theres a hard drive fail or a virus and its done.. id be willing to say that over 60% of Windows PC are throw aways.
