Year on Year -23.4% facts are simple people are less likely to be purchasing a PC, and Apple is doing little to reverse the trend.

The article is misleading. Number of Mac sold in Q3 2016 was 4.25 million, down from 4.8 million from Q3 2016, or about 8% decline. 23.4% decline the article mentions is marketshare loss. Apple suffered larger marketshare loss than other top brands largely due to stale product line up. Coupled with higher average selling price, it's a recipe for disaster.

I am not defending Apple's lack of care on Mac lineup. Apple should've updated MacBook Pro awhile back, even if it meant just a spec bump and switchover to USB-C.

Apple should have done far more far sooner, even with the upcoming refresh of the MBP I personally believe sales of Mac`s will continue to drop. Mac`s are simply too expensive for the value they currently represent, combined with much of the practicality of a PC being removed for the sake of being "thinner" no surprise sales are declining.

Prior to all these neglects, Mac's sale was actually increasing a bit. And while I enjoy using iPad Pro, I don't think it can replace Macs just yet for large segment of users.

There's definitely some price pressure, so Apple will have to figure out how to lower the cost of MacBook and replace MacBook Air for good, while cutting the prices of MacBook Pro a bit.

Touch ID is reiterated by infallible Mark Gurman as one of the new features of new MacBook Pro. I doubt El Capitan will squeeze in Touch ID support this late in the game.

So the new MacBook Pro will coincide with macOS Sierra, whose two features strongly hint Touch ID integration: (1) Auto Unlock with Apple Watch and (2) Apple Pay in Safari (via iPhone).

While it's entirely possible for macOS Sierra to coincide with iOS 10's release date, OS X always trailed iOS releases by 2 weeks or more in the past.

So my guess is late September release at the earliest, most likely in October.

This.
IIRC, new phones in Sept, and Sierra is due out September or early October.

You don't want iPhone <next> release to overshadow new MBPs, or put some people into an A OR B situation. A month or so later (whether announcement or actual release) gives multiple 'bangs' for marketing, and you may get someone that just picked up the latest iPhone also jumping on the 'need a new MBP' bandwagon as well.

If they wanted to, they could also have a bit of time gap between Sierra GA on existing hardware vs the new MBP release - better off limiting 'OS surprises' on releasing undoubtedly not cheaper than existing MBP prices, etc.

That is the real quandary as MS literally handed Apple a golden goose with Windows 8, with many users strongly disliking the overly touch centric OS. This placed Apple and more importantly the Mac in a prime position to gain traction in the market, only to be disregarded by Apple barring the occasional showpiece?

Unfortunately the Mac is far from one of Apple priorities, seems ridiculous given Apple`s resources, however the reality is here with us with a lacklustre Mac lineup and no indication of Apple changing strategy with IOS and Services being more the point of focus.

I get what Apple wants to achieve, selling an ecosystem, equally I feel the same in many respects it`s resulting in some products that are watered down as a direct result.
