A good question is to what degree has Apple encouraged an aura of elitism around their products as a marketing mechanism?

I think because people pay a premium for apple products they feel the need to defend apple to their dying breath so they feel better about their purchase. The majority act this way at least and have an elitist attitude. really annoying bunch imo.

I don't see how they could. I mean, it's not as if Apple asks you for a college degree before selling you a product. [...]

Oh don't get your dander up, my comment wasn't intended as a dig or slam or anything negative. Just a point for discussion.

I'd happened to be thinking of the general theme of the former "I'm a Mac" series ads and the portrayals by Justin Long and John Hodgman.

Yes, because provocation is NEVER a factor.

There are people who will punch whatever sensitive button they can find, just for the kicks of getting a rise out of someone.

Provocation has no effect if the recipient doesn't allow themselves to react. Not always easy, but certainly possible.

Posts like this make me curious though, why are you reading this particular forum (not MacRumors, I understand some people are here for iPhones/iPods/IPads) but on a macbook forum, if you don't even like the computers?

And I haven't told people that. I know some people prefer Windows, my roommate included (of course he also bitches a lot at his computer so it doesn't seem to me he gets less frustrated by his). But I think his problem more is not wanting to bother trying to get used to a new OS as it just isn't worth the time to him (he hasn't had enough time working on a mac to really make a proper assessment, he only has used mine just to look something up quickly and gets frustrated when he does something that is obvious that it's cause he's not used to my computer). He's not really big into computers like me (it's not that he is inept with them, he just spends all day at work in front of one and for him that's more than enough computer time) so he doesn't want to spend the little time he has trying to get used to a new system.

And while I have never had huge issues with Tiger, I can understand if you have had your own bad experience, it's pointless to argue otherwise. You wouldn't convince me to go back to using whatever Windows it was on my first windows computer I had (XP wasn't so bad though but I prefer Mac *shrug*).

The main reason Im on the site would be for my iPod classic, iPad and iPhone yes, but Im also interested in technology. I saw the thread and was hoping to see if there was a common theme why people use their Mac Books, believe me if OS X suddenly presented itself as a better OS for me to use I'd probably switch in a heartbeat. I dont really feel any loyalty to any brand.

lol I know. I wasn't attacking you, just responding; sorry if it came off that way.

I can see how those ads would give off such a vibe but I never really got that. Even though I disagree with some of the tactics used in the ads (some of which were misleading in my eyes), I saw them more as an affective effort to educate the public about some of the misconceptions of OS X as a platform. The 'switch' ads that came before them were a good start but kinda lame.

I just refute the notion that 'all' or even a 'majority' of computer users , particularly mac users, justify their purchases without some sort of instigation on some level. If someone walks in and starts blabbing about how much their hardware costs-when nobody asks-then it makes them look like a complete tool. When someone walks in and says "why'd you overpay for that hardware when I got mine for $___" it's slightly different.
