I agree; I would say the overwhelming majority of users utilize their MBP for performance. With that said, a large amount of buyers (including myself) considered computer styling as important. After you buy it however, you then get to experience first hand the magic of Mac and only then can you appreciate its capability by experiencing it first hand.

As far as saving money, I agree 100%. If anything, they make money as having a reliable and modern laptop is hugely important for success in both academia and the professional world. I use my personal MBP for all of my office work and it's ability to help me make the best documents has made me money. If it broke or was stolen today, I would be at Apple at 9AM first thing tomorrow to buy another.

why does your mac save money? the tasks can also be accomplished by an ordinary pc. and macs are not more durable. you can just buy three pcs instead of one mac and :)
i think the greatest advantage is still the build quality and comfort.

If you look at the average time a PC user keeps a laptop, it is far shorter than the average Mac user and so since Macs last longer periods, they need to be upgraded less and increases value.

Some things my comp has which have affected its usefulness is the illuminated keyboard and tough aluminum case...few other computers offer this. Now...the biggest reason this computer is so much better to me is actually the trackpad. On the go, you can't rely on external mice and you often need to do what you are doing quick. The touchpad is a gazillion times better...no other computer comes close.

The look of my UMBP caught my eye, I tried it. Realized how great it was inside and out, I had to make it mine. 40% of my purchase was based off of the hardware.

I am a computer science student and long time Thinkpad user. I am actually NOT a fan of the MBP design. My MBP is hidden under a black case, and a black vinyl overlay (see this thread). I recently switched to Mac for these reasons (in this order):

[1] OS X: I have always liked OS X, and it is UNIX-based. No more running VMWare to get a good UNIX environment (cygwin and putty are not fully functional). Also, restricting drivers/compatibility to a controlled set of hardware makes it a rock-solid OS at the cost of hardware versatility. Windows has to work with every piece of hardware out there, consequently a large percentage of Windows problems are caused by crappy drivers written by random manufacturers. The hardware restriction is reasonable on a laptop since they are not very upgradeable anyway.

[2] Screen quality: laptop screens really suck nowadays. The MBP line and a few select other models from other manufacturers have good screens.

[3] Battery life: Apple's battery life is amazing. This is partly due to OS X and partly due to their excellent lithium-polymer battery implementation.

Note that point [2] and [3] are moot on a desktop computer. Additionally, I require a lot of upgradeability from my desktop builds (I put them together myself) so OS X is out. Hackintosh builds are still a bit shakey and only tend to work with specific hardware, so I avoid them. I stick with Window/Linux desktops, for now.

You can say it saves you money due to the fact that the resale value is 90% better than a PC equivalent.

And where do the people who say others say "Cool Apple computer" live? I ride the Max daily (light rail train here in Portland), and have had my MBP for years and also have an iPad. Never has one person given half a **** what I use, and I don't give a **** what others' use.

I bought my MBP because I wanted to own a MBP, and iTunes on windows sucks, to say the least.

I actually kinda got some ribbing today from my bandmates over my recent purchase of a Macbook Pro 15". They thought it was kind of an extravagant purchase. SO I made the case that the two contractors in my band use expensive Dewalt and Makita drills. Most folks have cheaper Ryobi or black and decker drills at home. Or even some noname brand drill from Kragen or Autozone!
So I as an IT professional, web designer and audio engineer/musician am not gonna get some consumer level Dell or HP, seriously not one of those Acer pieces of junk! My laptop is a tool that travels with me to job sites where I work as a contractor. But instead of drywall or electrical I am working on networks, servers or workstations.
For web design its super neat to spin up VMs of Win7, WinXP etc. Way easier than my old habit of working on one computer than jumping over to a 2nd and 3rd computer to check rendering. Heck I can even host the whole site off my laptop for testing purposes.
Windows can do this as well, but for IIS you really want to run on a server and apache on windows is gross.

The audio engineer side of Macs is well known. There are some serious pro level devices out there that only work with Macs. Sadly, the exclusion of the expresscard slot on the recent 15" models knocks off a bunch of those contenders.

I just got my MBP 13" for Christmas. I am a graphic designer and use the entire CS5 suite for both school and work, and that is why I upgraded from PC to Mac. I know that Adobe products are just made to work better on Mac. And yes, a Mac is sleek and sexy and whatnot but there is so much more to it. I am MORE than happy with my switch, and I think I'll be an Apple lady forever :3

I use my macbook like crazy but something about it just make me feel so good when i pop it open.

Actually all apple product has that power over me.. I don't know why... but hell yeah.. why not.. You gotta enjoy these...

Usability is more important IMO. If OSX was clunky and a swine to use, I doubt many (including myself) would buy into a MB/MBP despite its good looks.

PC users replace laptops faster because they can afford too. Mac buyers on the other hand have to save longer to buy a new laptop. As a result, on average, Mac users have far more outdated hardware than PC users (even not accounting for Mac hardware usually being outdated right away)

Personally I live in a little town. Mac is basically unheard of. People are impressed by my iPod, that should give you a clue LOL. Whenever I have my uMBP out in public people look at me like I have a space ship on my lap...

I bet most people approach buying a laptop as they approach buying a car: good looks don't hurt, but it's not the deciding factor (unless you're a chick).

I could have had two Ford Fiestas for the price of one BMW, but the build quality and handling were superior. Whenever I rent a car in another city, it feels like a clattertrap and I'm reminded of what a satisfying decision my BMW was.

A Fiesta does essentially the same thing a BMW does, just as PCs do essentially the same thing Macs do (for far less money). Would I have bought the BMW if it looked like a Matrix? Hell, no--but only because there were comparable alternatives like Audi. Would I have bought a MBP if it looked like a clunky Gateway? Most likely, since the alternatives weren't comparable.

Great minds think alike.

What a good thread. Too bad it turned into a pissing contest. I'd really like hearing what others do with their macbooks.

I completely agree my friend. This has turned into a pissing contest. But whatever works. Personally, I use my mac because I got fed up with all the time I would lose while working with windows. I used windows all the way up through high school, so when it was time for me to buy my own computer, I went with a mac. One of the best decisions of my life haha. Especially for students. You can't beat a mac when you're a student :)

1) Using an Apple just because it looks cool is not only ludicrous but astounding.

2) It is the most stable and usable (by most people, not just geeks) platform available today.

1) I agree, yet due to Apples extremely successful marketing techniques thousands upon thousands of people buy Apple products simply to "look cool".

There were several market surveys done just prior to the iPad release and many people said they planned on buying one even though they had no idea what it was or what it did. Obviously these were not experienced computer users or enthusiasts, but mainstream consumers that simply wanted to "Be Cool".

2) I disagree, Apple _used to be_ the most stable. That is no longer the case. It's true that many people are incapable of using a windows computer and not mucking it up with random downloads of nefarious software. Yet that said, Windows 7 is particularly stable, fast and very similar to OS X.

Today both OS X, and Windows 7 are very good operating systems.

I use them both and enjoy excellent results.

If you want to use car analogies you should be more accurate. Let's say Mac is a BMW. Then PCs will cover a range from Ford Fiestas to Bugatti Veyron. You can buy Ford or you can choose Mercedes, Saleen or Bugatti. Apart from a good touch pad, MacBooks get surpassed by PCs in every aspect: battery life, CPU power, GPU power, quality of cases, quality of screens, quality of SSDs etc.

I totally agree. I use Mac because its what I have gotten used to...In all honesty if a Windows laptop came out with a Mac style trackpad, I'd buy it in a second. I actually feel confused when I use Windows laptops these days. Not that there's anything wrong with them, it's just completely different than what I got used to.

I do have 1 Windows computer in my house, and I use it for one reason. Prepare to flame me: Windows Media Center. I have tried EVERY single media center app out there and cannot find one with the ease of use and integration of Windows Media Center. Netflix, Hulu, Local media, AND livetv/DVR functionality all in one app. And it gets even better with Media Center Studio and plugins.

I must admit that I do like the way it looks but short of it looking like an Alienware would have got one anyway for what it does. Actually, I keep it in a case in public because of the glowing apple looking vulvar imo.

You should not be afraid to be flamed for using WMC. It is by far the best solution out there. Much better than ATV, ROKU and such (I did not try Google TV though).

I will say that my biggest problem with media center apps, aside from the lack of integration that I need, is the simple problem of having TOO many features I don't need. (Don't take this the wrong way, I am not saying the features shouldn't be there) If Plex could do livetv/dvr AND had an easy way to edit the menu I would use it in a second.

Even WMC annoyed me until I found Media Center Studio. I now have it themed and the menu has been edited down to just what I use, in an easy to navigate manner.

Additionally I would like to point out everytime I open my MacBook pro I just ooze inside like a 13 year old girl meeting justin beiber. I'm not sure if this is a long term side effect of being a first time MBP owner but its pretty cool. And the glowing apple on the mac? Seriously sometimes I just like to stare at the damn thing and aw and the design.

I know what you mean. At work, as an IT admin, I often have to do work on Windows laptops and when I use the trackpad, I without fail always end up trying to use multi-touch gestures on them and I think "What the heck? Why isn't it scrolling/swiping? Oh yeah, I'm on a Windows laptop, duh!"
