I like to use something that does not require a data link and have found "HERE" and "NAVMII" both work very well.
I use Waze for the speed cameras.

Overall, Google is providing a much better service. It's leagues better at finding places by name, it works phenomenally well even in many overseas locations, and its traffic knowledge is at times uncannily good. My complaints with it are that I don't especially like the interface while driving, and there doesn't seem to be a way to adjust the voice volume independently of the music when connected to my car, so the voice directions are always way too loud. So I use Apple maps when it can find the location easily, and I don't expect traffic to be a big issue because I can adjust the volume, and the at-a-glance information is presented a bit better.

Apple maps since:
  • Haven't had an issue w/ routing or POIs
  • You can activate it via Siri
  • You can lock your phone to turn the screen off but when a new direction is coming up the screen automatically comes back on for a few seconds so you can see what it is.

I use Navigon, it works without needing a cell signal, which in a number of occasions has been great. The maps are already downloaded to my phone and as long as I can get a GPS lock, I'm able to get driving directions.
At this point in time, I found myself using Google Maps a lot more then Navigon. That app is ok, but google maps seems more integrated into webpages, i.e., directions are usually posted for maps.google.com so it opens up in the app.

I've checked Apple Maps a couple of times. It's okay but on longer journeys or travelling abroad I use the Navigon app.

I used to use Apple Maps with my previous car (didn't have navigation).

+ Really nice and clear instructions
+ Has the ability to only wake up your phone when a navigation instruction is coming up (saves a lot of battery)
+ Fast

- Less accurate traffic information, Google Maps is king here
- Doesn't show faster or slower alternatives like Google Maps does
- Less POI's than Google Maps (especially if you're not in the US)

Whenever I use Apple maps it shows me 2 - 3 different routes and the times it takes for each (say 18 min vs 23 min).
That's not what I mean. Google Maps pops up alternative routes during driving. Very convenient because traffic may be very different 30 from minutes from the moment I start driving.

I don't very often need GPS for driving--most of the time I know where I am. I do use Google maps on my bike though. When I am out for a ride, I am much more prone to just going down some random road to see what's down there.

Waze, mostly because of the alerts for cops/road work from real time people (even though 95% of the time the cops are not there)

also on a side note (and this could just be me) but I feel like Google maps is slow to update its turns as fast as others.

I find Google maps to be more detailed than my car's GPS so I tend to use it more when I really want to zoom in.

Currently I use a dedicated Sat Nav. However I would love to use Apple maps if the data was more up to date and there were more features for navigation including POI's.

Apple is improving, even if it's at a glacial pace.

Google on the other hand get's me where I'm going, which is often places I've never been before, directly and without a problem day after day.

Being mission critical to keep me on time, I simply cannot risk the errors Apple maps contains. I know, I try it side by side with Google once a week just to see if it's usable.

Living in CA, a highly populated state, it's disappointing that Apple seems to be asleep at the wheel

Waze is the one I use, realtime traffic is much better. Not really used the apple maps that much but I have been using waze for about 3 years & I think it's fantastic especially with the realtime traffic & incident reporting & police updates etc.

I use Apple Maps in the United States. Works fine. I've taken trips across half a dozen states in the Northeast and there were no problems.

In rental cars I can plug in the iPad or iPhone to the Bluetooth connector and listen to music. From time to time Siri will lower the volume on the music, make an announcement, then bring the music back up.

I haven't tried Google maps in a few years. It made me mad because it kept sending me to businesses that were closed or had moved away. It got to the point that every time I looked up a business in Google maps I would call them to make sure they were real.

Both worked fine here. Apple maps was crap when it first came out. But now seems fine.

Apple maps does not send audio to bluetooth if it is connected while Google maps app will send audio to Bluetooth if you have an audio device connected...

This isn't my experience. I always have my phone connected via Bluetooth, listening to music, and Apple Maps sends audio cues to my car's audio without any problems.

Cannot agree with you more. Apple Maps wastes my car electricity more.
