Never once used it. I don't have a reason to. Plus I don't go to Starbucks other than to sell used electronics.
Never. I don't go to any of the places enough to invest time to learn how to use it.
I travel a lot but after years of being irritated in line behind someone fighting to have their phone scanned at the gate I swore I'd never do that. Lol. Plus I always have a pass and my phone is generally tucked away on me with my headphones on. Seems like a hassle.
For me personally it's a solution looking for a problem. I'd like to hear how others use it though.
I picked up an app that makes passbook entries for rewards cards like LA Fitness, Kroger, etc. But I've never actually used my iPhone to check in for anything even though the passes are in the app. I guess I really should try it as I can drastically thin down my wallet and leave all those cards in a drawer. A lot of the rewards let you use a phone number to check in so I wouldn't bother with those but there are still a half dozen or so I should scan into passbook.
Kroger now has its own through its app.
Thanks. Downloaded. Registered. Scanned my plus card. Now there's ANOTHER copy of my Kroger card in Passbook.
Still it's nice to have the app as it includes things like digital coupons. I may not be willing to stuff my pocket with paper on the way to the store and then fumble with paper at checkout, but click something in an app and save 2 bucks on something I buy every other week? I'm all in!

I don't how much of a learning curve is involved in swiping a notification that pops up when you're near a place you can use one of your cards.....
The two biggest uses I get out of it are travel and starbucks. I check in on the AA app and my passbook boarding pass stays updated in case flights are delayed or the gate changes. Quicker than the traditional text/call alerts.
Also nice to be able to skip the counter and go straight for the security line.
I also keep track of my miles with my AAdvantage member card - though I wish AA would implement an auto update feature rather than forcing you to open the app......
Starbucks has the most streamlined working IMO. After the initial hiccups, it now runs like a dream. Pops up when I'm near a Starbucks, balance refreshes almost instantly after I use it. Really slick.
I'm looking forward to increased sports tickets support, and more loyalty programs to jump on board. I've occasionally used coupons for Target and Kroger via my member card passes I have stored. I also have a Walgreens rewards card.
Haven't really checked up on it much lately - it works flawlessly for the things I use it for. I'll have to check in to see if there are any other apps/businesses who have picked it up. I, for one, am shocked Best Buy wasn't all over this. I suppose now that the rewards system is built in and they can automatically apply GCs you have on your account at purchase, its somewhat a moot point for the certificates themselves. But a pass that shows my current point total and has a barcode so I don't have to carry around the stupid card or enter my phone number every time would be nice.
You said its a solution looking for a problem - I think its a solution to the growing number of loyalty cards and sophistication of loyalty programs out there. Seems like stores have been slow to adopt - but I have a feeling with iBeacons being rolled out and the iWatch/iOS 8 with rumored purchase features, we might see a big spike in usability and support this year.
