Not so much fun to type long documents on. Like I said, if there was a good mechanical bluetooth keyboard that might do it...

Any bluetooth keyboard would work.....just find one you like.

I voted iPad mini because I use that more often than not. However I do use my MacBook Air quite freqently for graphic design and will be using both the MacBook Air and iPad mini heavily for my online MBA program. Textbooks on the iPad mini, coursework on the MacBook Air.

Really love both devices.

I laugh when I read posts claiming it's so much work and time to get out one's laptop.

I can easily whip out my MacBook Pro with it's SSD I'm ready to work in just a few moments. A great majority of the time it's sleeping, in which case it's ready the second I open it up. I really enjoy my MBP, it's the center of my Apple ecosystem.

Besides the fact it's the tool I use for my engineering work, it's also so much nicer ergonomically for writing reports emails and the like.

That said I have both current iPads, mini and Air, mostly for casual surfing the web. That represents about 10% of my screen time.

Ya maybe if all you have the MBP hooked up to is a power cord. For me, i have to unplug 2 usb cords, mini display port cord, power cord, speaker cord. Then unplug the power cord from behind my desk, then put MBP in sleeve and everything in bag. Definitely not as quick as just picking up the ipad.

Currently I use an iMac most of the time and will soon be getting a retina MBP to replace it. I do not foresee using my iPad Air much except at bedtime when it's delightful to use to surf the net while lying down in bed. The Air got me addicted to retina screens and so that is why I want to get a retina MBP to replace the iMac.

I use my ipad air more often for browsing, emails, youtube. I just open my laptop once in a while for watching movies and torr3nt dls.

Like I said - I'm used to doing most of my typing on a mechanical keyboard. Bluetooth keyboards - as far as I'm aware - are all membrane keyboards.

Well, those are scissor-switch I'm fairly sure, but definitely not mechanical.

Can't get to it from work - but let me know if that offers any help/suggestions!

Oh wow - I stand corrected. Thanks, that's very helpful! I didn't think that a Bluetooth mechanical keyboard was possible because of the power requirements - some of my mechanical keyboards need two full USB 3 ports to function fully. This is definitely worth looking in to though, the Plum 87 looks like a nice solution...

I just got a new bluetooth foldable keyboard for my ipad so now it is much easier to type and I can easily type long posts for mac rumors on my ipad and i can use it for school/work to make documents and keynotes:)
I guess my computer is really getting phased out.

My wife and I are very light users and don't have a need to create any content, more so just consume. We use our ipad airs for 90-95% of the things we do. The MBA barely gets used, but it's still nice to have.

Thanks for all the replies...
It does seem like the ipad s a lot more portable for day to day browsing on safari and i guess i can see why so many people still use laptops since they have full functionality. I was wondering for anyone who has one of those windows tablets that turn into laptops-how good are they and how do they work-would you recommend it over an ipad? And what about the surface does anyone recommend that?

It depends.

Have an iMac, rMBP and an iPad in the house. iMac gets used the most, then the rMBP and then the iPad.

I *have* to use the Mac to manage the backend of the business and being able to multiple things at the one time. Specialist software such as Final Cut etc are way more easier to use on OSX than iMovie of Pinnacle on iOS (I have tried them but they take way longer and not as advanced). Also, running a business, means having loads of files store locally (file management system) - the cloud doesn't cut it. Sure, it helps but local access is way more convenient for *us*. Having to touch the screen and looking at a 9.7" display all day can get quite tiring and painful.

Coming back onto my first point on 'it depends' - recently recommended an iPad to a friend who runs a courier business in the UK. He's always on the road and carries a netbook (Acer) which has poor battery life, loaded with spyware and viruses each time I see him. He runs the business himself and needs to be connected to the internet to 'view jobs' on the go and having a GPS built in to the iPad allows him to easily connect to TomTom and collect/deliver goods. It also allows him to respond to emails on the go and manage his entire operation. He doesn't run his own website (not very technical) so basically goes onto a dedicated portal for UK based jobs and looks for work on the road when in X city so he doesn't have an empty van on the way back. A Macbook Air would be an overkill for his needs. All he needs is a 3G Sim, iPad Air and thats him sorted.

So depending on what type of business / operation you run - just got to pick the proper tools. We personally couldn't live with iPads in our business. It helps to have one but not an 'essential'.

wow, i never knew so many people still use a desktop-besides maybe at work- it seems like the desktop computer is just kinda old tech now. Maybe unless u have a Mac Pro or a really nice gaming computer. Also Im surprised how little people use an ipad mini compared to the full size ipad

Desktops are not old technology, they are just not "in"
I am now sitting on my couch and using my Macbook Air. My iPad is next to me, but somehow I prefer to use my MBA.

I guess they aren't old tech but they just aren't very convenient therefor not as many people use them as much.
I prefer my ipad mini over my full size ipad because it is the perfect size but i can definitely see why u like your mba much better than your normal ipad.

The main advantage of iOS devices is convenience and mobility. Only the Macbook Air comes close in terms of mobility and convenience, but still, it's a full blown computer, and many people don't want to have to deal with that. An iPad is perfect for many use case scenarios and people and I totally understand why it exists.
Today I was playing with my iPad Air a bit and installed 7.1 beta 3 again (had it uninstalled just to see how 7.0.4 feels after using 7.1). iOS 7.1 makes the device much better and solves many of the problems and crashes people have. But of course, there are other threads for that :)

ya i cant wait for the update-my brand new ipad has safari crash all the time.
When i think portability i think of iPads first but the MBA does come 2nd/3rd i guess.

iPad air

Before I got my ipad air I was on a desktop most of the time (windows xp) but now I always seem to use my ipad because I can literally go anywhere with it (instead of always sitting in that uncomfortable computer chair) and it basically does everything I did on my desktop. In fact my ipad actually seems more powerful than my desktop come to think of it :)

I've kinda grown out of gaming but I still greatly enjoy SimCity and the occasional adventure game, but aside from any gaming, I use my Air more than my PC or my Mac by far. I use my Mac for music recording and gigs and the PC for gaming, but the rest of my time is on the tablet on my couch playing a game, surfing, FB'ing, some gaming, etc.
