I like children, but they're horrible conversation and they can't get into any of the interesting movies at the cinema until they're a lot older. We'll most likely have different taste in music, and even when we both enjoy the same song, he'll turn the volume up too loud for a proper listen.

Maybe in 5 years or so, but not now. I'm "only" 28. ;)

I certainly respect all those who wait until later in life -- but for me personally, I really like that I had my children young (better shot at keeping up) and that I'll be home free when I'm 44. Can't wait for the next chapter!!
The words "dream on" spring to mind, if you really think they'll be out of your hair by then. Ain't going to happen.

I have a 5 1/2 year old son; the most important thing in my life.

I'd never have another child, though. Worrying every minute of my life about one person is enough for me ;)

Seriously though, if I was ever to have another child, then I'd adopt. There are lots of children around the world that need a parent.

ut when he calls me dad and runs to greet me - well it makes it all worth the main artery bleed on our bank account.
:)

I think that you hit the nail on the head. :)

No kids for me- I have nieces and nephews to spoil. :) I love hanging out with them, but I love the fact that I just give them back to their Mom and Dad at the end of the day. I like to take them out and buy them tons of stuff. It's more fun than actually having my own. And they think I'm the coolest thing in the world. ;)

The world is overpopulated and there are so many children without parents to make more is both selfish and absurd. I'm in my early 40's and my GF is in her late 30's and fortunately we see eye to eye on this issue. (No pun intended) We don't have any yearnings for children and find it difficult to be with other peoples children. Moreover, I think within 20 years, strategies about reducing the population will enter the political arena. 40 years too late but ... better late than never. I think the world population needs to be 50% of what it presently is.

Adoption is not out of the question for me (or for many of the people here I'm sure), but there is a natural tendency to have children that are one's "own" n'est-ce pas?

In either case, I wouldn't call it 'selfish' because having children and loving them is arguably one of the least selfish things one can do.

It already has; many countries have birth limitation policies, but they are not as strong as, say, China's because they do not involve strict enforcement.

The wife is driving me crazy about this on a daily basis... i want kids... just not tomorrow! i am 35 and she is 30... we have been married just over a year.

why not enjoy ourselves a bit before making the ultimate commitment?

but try to tell her that and its straight to the moon alice!

No, it would be too incompatible with my lifestyle.

I'd be happy to look after someone elses for extended periods of time I just have no desire to procreate myself, it'd probably be a crime against humanity.

Why assume that having children means the end of your life? The fun may be different, but it can still be fun.

Oh sure- for most people it's great. But my life just doesn't have room for kids of my own. I'm just not into it and it would be detrimental to my life and my career, not to mention bad for the kids themselves. If I'm not at work, I'm either working on a film, or trying to find my next film gig. I'm not home much at all.

I like to borrow kids. That's fun. But owning them? A very bad idea for me.

Hm, after voting it seems like I'm in the extreme minority, only one of me...

I do want kids someday but am not in any rush to do so. I've had a name for my daughter picked out since I was about 5 years old, any desire like that which has lasted that long is bound to become a reality someday. Like the above posted I think that too many kids is environmentally irresponsible which is why I only want one from my own genes, and the rest (if any) will be adopted by myself and whomever I end up getting hitched to. Although with the current fertility technology, the amount of kids you get from that can be a bit unpredictable...

Mmmm, babies.

Straight woman, I don't want kids. I like kids as long as I can give them back to their parents. I don't even like babysitting.

Life isn't worth living if you are not going to get kids. I plan on getting some 3-5 in my lifetime. I just need to finish my studies and get some hot chick with brains to marry me. If signs are right, most if not all of them would be almost clones of me as I'm almost 100% like my father. Rather dominant genes we carry, yes? :)

EDIT: thinking that some people really consider getting kids "enviromentally irresponsible" and avoid that to the verge of self-sterilization delights me. stupid hippie genepool shrinks every day!

So we can look forward to 3-5 clones of your dominant and hippie-hating persona, can we? That's nice.

Wow, what an utterly bizarre post. I disagree with nearly every opinion which you share in this post.

I'm not dominant, my genes are. Or more accurately, the allels of my genes are dominant versions in every aspect except for shape of my lips, AFAIK. :) Oh yes, my kids will hate hippies - that's where my memes will come into play. ;)
