I don’t even really watch movies on my iPad mini or 12.9 iPad Pro. Movies and shows must be watched on my big screen tv! That means I can only watch them at home of course, but that’s perfectly fine with me, since I prefer not to consume media when I’m out and about anyway. Except of course if I’m on a long plane ride, I’ll watch on my iPP. And if I want some side entertainment while I’m doing another task (away from my tv), then I’ll play something that either I’ve seen before or that is very talky/non-cinematic on whatever is the biggest screen handy, but for me that’s always going to be at work or home where I’ll have bigger options than a phone (iPad, Mac, or tv).

Yes, I have a long commute to work (about 90 minutes) so I watch most of my Netflix shows and some Youtube on my Max. It was the main reason I got the Max because I wanted a bigger screen to watching content.

I usually watch videos on my iPad Pro or my TV but from time to time I watch something on my phone. I really don’t like listening to things with the iPhone speaker. There’s something about the sound coming from a phone speaker that’s like nails on a chalkboard to me.

Yes and it's actually pretty good for watching movies on considering the size. I don't watch a lot of new movies though because they suck, especially all those bland superhero movies.

I watch at least a movie or two a week on it and during the NRL season, I will watch live games via it when I'm on the train or between jobs. I travel a lot for work and have a fair bit of downtime, so I have to do something and there just isn't much on the internet anymore that I'm interested in apart from a few sites (like macrumors). I've downloaded a comic book reader on my max, but I'm yet to try it out. I'm hoping it's acceptable so I can totally ditch my iPad which I find just isn't portable enough. Honestly though, I wish the Max had been the exact same size as a plus phone, but all screen. That would have been perfect.

If you don't travel a lot, don't use a train, plane, bus for commuting or don't have a lot of downtime at work, I don't really see the need to watch movies/TV shows on a max. It really does depend on your situation.

I watch videos all the time on my phone. At work, even at home. I actually pass up my iPad Pro 10.5 most of the time unless I’m doing some sort of extended watching. But there’s times at work where it’s slow and I’m waiting on something, I watch live tv on my phone to kill time. No issue whatsoever. And it’s a lot nicer on the xs max compared to the x.
I’m in a unique position where I may be giving up my iPad and just using an IPhone XS Max and my MBP 15” for daily use. I’d like to hear more if your experience between the Max and IPP 10.5.

Not much to it really. I have the iPad Pro 11” now. But the same still stands. If I on my phone for something, and it’s just a quick video, I just watch it on my phone. It’s not the greatest experience, but it works. I’ve watched 3 different movies recently on my max since I didn’t have my iPad with me. For watching a movie, I would definitely prefer the iPad, but I don’t always have it with me. My max is always with me, so it gets a lot of use for videos just because it’s what I have on hand. I could do everything, and more with a mbp...but I love the iPad for its portability. Although I guess really it’s not that much different then a mbp honestly. I use to have a mbp but traded it off for an iPad...the iPad is just so much more comfortable to use at home. Comparing the iPad to the max, to me the iPad is just a bigger iPhone for the most part. Most things are better/easier on the iPad just because of the screen size. I wouldn’t want to go without either, and am happy with the combination. I just wish that the iPad did more...had a file management system like a mbp. If I could upload music and videos straight from a usb hard drive, it would be perfect. That to me is the only advantage a mbp has over the iPad. I camp a lot on the summer, and use my iPad for a bedroom tv in the bedroom in my camper. The way I have it mounted, I couldn’t do that with a mbp, and can’t think of any way it would be easy, or as aesthetically pleasing to mount a mbp there.

Ditto your remarks. I cross between XS Max with me all times to iPad Pro 12.9 or iPad Air 2 and as needed at home MBP. Use em all, love em all.

I watch movies on my 27” iMac with the IINA player and my own custom subtitle font based on Lucida Grande Bold displayed in the letterbox beneath the video. It’s amazing! I even converted VobSub to SubRip to enjoy Donnie Darko with big, bold, sharp subtitles.

I haven't tried this yet, only watched a few YouTube clips.

But I have an iPad Pro 10.5" and a MacBook. Perhaps film viewing is part of your commute.
I have a laptop and I prefer bigger screen that screen of my iPhone. Wondering if I can get proector soon.

Only ever watch TV/Movies on large screen TVs in living room and bedroom. Never watched a movie on a phone, tablet or computer. Conversely, I've never watched a YouTube video on a large screen TV.

I prefer my 10.5" iPad but I've watched some films on the XS Max when in bed. I use nPlayer as it has a screen fit (Aspect Fit (Screen Area)) that shows the video without the notch covering it.

Doesn’t the iOS tv app allow you to watch movies without the notch?

I never use it but I tried one free TV show on it and it displayed without the notch. But I don't have anything in the app's library with different aspect ratios to check.

Well in order for Tiny iPhone XS max (witch is the same width as iPhone Plus models) to be as big as iPad or Macbook you have to watch it like 4 inch away to be just as big as iPad/Macbook. Dont forget that 4 inch away radiation can easily strain your eyes making you cross eyes. While iPad and Macbook has bigger screen and are held much farther like 14-16 inch away so it wont strain your eyes that much. If those three are held 12 inch away same distance you will see how tiny the iPhone XS Max is (less than 3" tall in screen for a 1 hour film is a no no for me) just like comparing the earth size to the Neptune Planet

But it doesn't have to appear as large as an iPad screen to be usable. I certainly don't hold my XS Max 4-6" away from my eyes for viewing videos or anything else - more like 12" at least. And I have old eyes.

That's good and all. But what I was getting at was this...
I want the actual physical size of the plus model but want it all screen as that would make the actual screen size a little bigger than the max. The plus models have bezels that make its screen slightly more slender than the max.

And the entire point (for me) to not use an ipad is portability. I travel a lot for work so carrying an ipad isn't overly convenient. It's fine if you are only using it for a once or twice a year trip, but I'm using it multiple times a week.
