Mine is hidden, because if it isn't, I cant make windows full screen without having it being cut off at the bottom by the dock. Even though I have a 20" screen :)

You can never have enough screen real estate. Mine is on the left, hidden and no magnification on all my machines.

depends on what im doing, normally its shown but when im not using it or need some extra room or using a app with buttons at the bottom then its well and truely hidden.

I have a 24" screen now, so it's showing pretty much all the time. I find the space it wastes is worth it if it means I don't miss IMs/Colloquy pages—I'm really bad about noticing messages unless I have multiple visible bouncing flashing things around.

On the rare occasion I need FCP these days (that might change eventually, but for now it's not too often), I can just Cmd+Opt+D.

I like hidden and I use that for all my Macs, it just works for me better that way, though initially I used shown (this was waaay back on the first versions of osx) I liked it hidden so now I use that al the time, I hate when it crashes though.

Does anyone remember the wheel from early OSX builds? I thought that was pretty cool I wonder why they removed it.

I like it showing.

If I have it hidden, it pops up as soon as I put my cursor near the bottom of the screen, which irritates me. I know it is meant to this, but when I do it by accident it irritates.

I prefer to have my windows resized so they are aware of the dock (or dock-aware as I call it). Plus if you want to show it for a moment, then parts of the window get hidden - (normally the scroll bars).

If the dock is hidden and you want to drag documents to launch them in a particular application (say a psd in safari or preview), then you have to drag the icon right to the bottom of the screen, wait for the dock to slide up, then move it over the application you wish to launch it in. If the dock is showing then you can just drag and drop the icon right over the app.

I can't get used to it on the left or right. I hate it when the icons are small (This has a lot to do with the fact I don't like it on the left or right). Magnification is fun, but not really useful for me as I have the icons at a nice size anyway (my dock is about 60px high).

I also like seeing the status. i.e. number of mail messages, whether transmit has finished an upload, whether photoshop has finished a filter. You miss out on that with a hidden dock and tiny icons.

If I am doing quite a lot of work in one particular app (like Photoshop), then I will sometimes hide it. But it is unusual.

Another thing - applications *have* to bounce when loading. I tried turning it off, and all you get is a flashing triangle which is barely noticeable.

One more thing - genie is my preferred effect. Scale just isn't the same.

I have my dock hidden and maximum magnification. At first when I got my iBook it was to save screen real estate, but after I got my MBP it was just habitual to keep it hidden.

I've tried it any number of ways, and have ended up with my dock always showing... but on the left side of my screen. The few apps I use all the time are over there, with everything else launched via Quicksilver.

Magnification is off cuz that really bugs me. :D

re: dock hiding

I keep mine to the right and hidden on my powerbook. Reminiscent of the old days using NeXTStep.

My screen is rather small. I kept finding myself catching and dragging icons off my dock when I wanted to change a window size, so I turned hiding on.

I've been used to it ever since

I keep mine visible on my 15" MBP just because I like seeing all of my icons:) if I need the space I'll hide it, but a small dock full of icons combined with a clean desktop (with just the HD) looks good to me

On my eMac, as well as my 12" PowerBook, I used dock hiding because of screen space. I guess I've grown used to it, and I still have hiding on, even on my 15" MacBook Pro. I guess I like the fact that it's there when you need it, and it's not when you don't.

Put simply, yes I use dock hiding.

I keep the dock hidden w/ about 3/4 magnification. I was actually thinking about this earlier today. I keep it hidden for similar reasons and people have noted above, namely I like to have my full screen dedicated to what I am working on.

There has been a fair bit of discussion on here about what sort of transparency features we will see in leopard. I had two thoughts on what would I would enjoy seeing as it relates to the dock

1. One nice feature would be the ability to adjust the luminosity of the dock and its applications so that they can be a bit more out of the way without actually, well, being out of the way. I hate to say this, but sort of like the palate in microsoft word.

2. The second feature would again implicate transparency, but this time I was thinking that it would be even nicer to have the ability to make the dock act as if it were physically transparent , i.e. permeable, and thereby allow a user to have their screen filled with other applications and provide them with the ability for the dock to be hidden and shown without causing the other application windows to be reduced or moved.

Just some thoughts and would welcome feedback.
