Thank you, 82asmdf203.

Just an update, the next version of DockMod includes support for modding the dock for the horizontal and vertical positions, and also allows you to change the indicator lights (just the color for now). It will also be removed from BETA status.

It is possible to change the image as well, but the biggest issue I have with that is that it seems that for the bottom dock, the images need to be made a specific way so that they don't overlap over the edge of the 3D dock. Also, it is possible to change the separator image as well, but I run into the same issue: the bottom dock separator needs to have a specific slant. If anyone has experience with swapping images for these two things in pre-ML days, please let me know.

two words: awe some...

I probably could... but I won't. Too many variables. It really should be soon, though the holidays are coming up and my family thinks I've been attached to my computer too long now. I've finished the backend stuff and am now redesigning the interface to accommodate the changes necessary to customize different dock orientations. Also, I have plans to implement easier theme sharing and so I want the new interface to work with that when it comes.

Some ideas I have for the theme sharing is something similar to an online marketplace, where users can share their themes with others, and browse other user themes, right from inside DockMod. I want the UI to be flexible enough to include that when it comes as well.

That sounds alot like how Flavours does it, and it seems to work pretty well.

Great tip... for dock at the bottom. Doesn't seem to have an effect for vertical docks.

No, not yet Stephen, but the developer is working on the next release which will take this application out of the Beta phase and include mods to the vertical docks.

@unsanity77: The holidays are over big guy. Whatcha got for us? :D

Not sure if you can get 100% as I still see the diagonal edges very faintly but you can indeed make the dock 'mostly' transparent.

Also not sure if this works on the side dock haven't bothered to test yet.

Attached is the basic settings to do so and what it looks like. (also have a black background overlaid on my wallpaper with GeekTool.

I have set dock transparent on bottom.
When I move dock to left a grey dock appears.
When I move back to bottom a grey dock remains on left.
Any ideas how to get transparent on left?

And, thanks to the developer for this app.

There is no way to edit the left/right dock because the app doesn't do that at this point. The developer did say that was coming in the next release though.

Anyone else going for 2D black?

I assume the Nocturne theme will be updated for 9.1 soon, so it's just a matter of time for the menu... so it's just the edge-to-edge dock that throws me off. Can someone please help me with that?

The edge to edge dock is not actually a dock.

It is simply a black bar drawn there by Geektool. To do this all you have to do is drag a shell geeklet onto the desktop and position it and color it using the position and style settings.

The clock in the lower right is also drawn on by Geektool.

The actual dock in that picture is transparent and sits on top of the bar drawn by Geektool. It also appears to be aligned to the left corner using the terminal command:

Code:
defaults write com.apple.dock pinning -string start; killall Dock

Edit:

Also unless there is some glaring incompatibility with 10.9.1 (which I sort of doubt there is) you can just edit your system version to 10.9 run the installer then edit it back up to 10.9.1 to install nocturne on 10.9.1

Code:
sudo defaults write /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist "ProductVersion" "10.9.0"

And people wonder why they are having issues with Mavericks. This type of thread further confirms that many people who are shouting loudly saying "Mavericks Sucks" are the ones that refuse to reveal that they do a lot more harm to their own system.

MBP 10.9.1 Clean install. No Issues.
27" iMac 10.9.1 Not-Clean Install. Finder/Time Machine issues.

BOTH have exact same things done to them, including the dock. (and same apps installed)

Might want to rethink your comment. :rolleyes:

really. what does one thing have to do with the other? i've been customizing my mac since 10.3, and no issues. mavericks is great on my MacBook Pro...AND i have a bunch of customizations.

there's no harm in making one's computer PERSONAL, no harm in doing these things if you know what you're doing (and/or trust the developers who come up with apps like 'dock mod').

all is well... :cool:

Oh yeah, your experience automatically qualifies everyone. I stand by what I say and I don't need to rethink anything. :rolleyes:

Dude...YOU'RE the one making absolute statements. not everyone who customizes their mac has issues with mavericks, just as...not everyone who has issues has done ANY customizing.

every situation is unique...based on hardware, apps, user knowledge, random mysteries...

anyway, your comment makes an assu mption with no info to back it up. let it go...

There is harm in doing so if it causes instability. Some hacks are designed to work well with the previous system and have not be updated to work with the newest system.

Tell me sir, why is it that I as power user who uses his Macbook Pro and iMac for business, graphic design an extensive movie editing have no issues with Mavericks and some others do? I guess I have a few of those special edition Macs that can deal with problematic OS's without issue....Oh Wait, here's a thought, maybe the system isn't as awful as some of the FUD spreaders make it out to be. :p

Go back and READ, because you didn't. I said MANY people, not EVERYBODY. You're getting so worked up. Just ignore my posts, you didn't need to reply...oh maybe you're one of the ones I was talking about and feel the need to be defensive. :rolleyes:

i don't think mavericks is awful at all, in fact...am enjoying my best OS X experience to date. AND i've customized a lot of things, deleted some system files... so am STILL not getting your point. there is no ONE reason people have issues with their OS, and for those of us who enjoy the customizations...let us do what we want...and accept the consequences (IF there are any).

anyway...whatever. it's all small stuff anyway.... :cool:

Just an example.
Explain why *some* people have had issues with WiFi (over the years) while others have had none. With exact same hardware. Right out of the box some iMacs had issues connecting (and staying connected) to WiFi. (Hint: Apple released updates to fix the problem, multiple times... wasn't the end user)

10.9.0 had issues with Mail (I didn't) so of course it was users messing with the system right?

I have had zero issues with my iMac, from 10.6 through 10.8.5 upgrading right over the top of the old OS. Some swear that you shouldn't do it.. others say it's ok. Apple says it's ok..
10.9.0 was the worst experience I have ever had with OS X. Because i'd have to force restart the iMac every 2-3 days. With 10.9.1 it's about once a week..

I'm backing up all my data on the iMac now, then i'm doing a clean install this time and see if my issues go away.
I love Mavericks, and you won't get me to go back to ML. If my clean install fixes my 1 problem I continue to have.. Then i'll be happy. Again, it's only on my 2011 27" iMac, my MBP runs Mavericks flawlessly.
I upgraded the HD in the MBP with a Hybrid when I installed 10.9.0

My errors date back to 10.6.. when I do searches for the error message. So I hardly think it's something I did while "messing" with the OS. :rolleyes:

I bet Apple never tested the upgrade path I took.. 10.6.0 through 10.8.5, probably not installing every update.. then 10.9.0

Dockmod is no different than many of the other tweaks out there, it's not the problem. Bugs that Apple has had with the OS dating back months in beta testing.. and not fixed... are the problem and not people like me "tweaking" the OS. Dockmod has nothing to do with Finder or Time Machine.. Hardly think it's the culprit.

If you don't like customizing your OS... then why did you post in a thread about commercial software that customizes your OS? :confused:

...you can just edit your system version to 10.9 run the installer then edit it back up to 10.9.1 to install nocturne on 10.9.1

sudo defaults write /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist "ProductVersion" "10.9.0"

So far this is progressing like clockwork! The dock is practically done (just can't remove that diagonal sliver left of the apps stack). I've gone so far as to add 70 additions/revisions to the Gill Sans icon packs including icons for the new apps that come with Mavericks.

Before I attempt the Nocturne workaround- am I supposed to simply swap in "10.9.1" in the command quoted above to return to 10.9.1?

Btw, I have some DockMod discount codes to share, do forum rules allow me to post them here in the open?

Yes you would enter 10.9.1 to return to normal.

For max safety just make a backup of /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist before you mess with it.

It's also possible you might need to edit one of the other values, I'm not sure which one Nocture checks but I think last time I did this it was just the product version.

Here's all the variables in systemversion.plist
Code:
{
    ProductBuildVersion = 13C32;
    ProductCopyright = "1983-2013 Apple Inc.";
    ProductName = "Mac OS X";
    ProductUserVisibleVersion = "10.9.2";
    ProductVersion = "10.9.2";
}

As for getting rid of the diagonal silver bar... I really have no idea. If dockmod can't do that in the current version then I think you'll just have to wait for the dev to update the app.

Actually scratch that...

As a quicky workaround until whoever writes dockmod updates it you can use Geektool.

  • Make a tiny box geeklet just large enough to cover the silver bar
  • Make it fully black
  • Place it over the silver bar
  • Check the 'keep on top' option for the geeklet

The downside is it will also be on top of windows if you happen to drag them over the dock. Edit: Nevermind the dock does this anyways so there is no downside... at least that pops to mind at the moment.

Thanks again Wolf, and great idea regarding the sliver!

Just in case things go FUBAR, here's the codes before it's too late. :p

Alright, so the command almost works. I can open up the Nocturne install, but only for a few seconds before it shuts itself down- this also seems to happen to every other application as well. Good thing I had the original plist at ready as you suggested.

As for the GeekTool idea, it works if you avoid opening any other apps than what's already stored on the dock - otherwise the geeklet masks any new apps that want to join. I can make do with that. ;)

Still, it would be great to get Nocturne or Obsidian working.

I tried Obsidian previously btw, and it alone works as expected, it's just that the "WhiteUIServer.menu" that came bundled with it (that's supposed to replace the icons) makes the menu blink a few times, but ultimately doesn't make changes to it. The end product is black on black- the default black text and icons remain. What do you think is going on there?

Wow yeah good thing you saved a backup. No idea why defaults write destroys that...

Anyways here's how to open it as root in TextEdit (because command line text editors are dumb):

Code:
sudo -b "/Applications/Textedit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit" /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist

Once you have it open just make sure to change this line:

Code:
	<key>ProductVersion</key>
	<string>[B]10.9.0[/B]</string>

Save the file, then open up the nocturne installer.

Of course it might be nice to make a backup again but I've actually tested this method myself and it didn't screw the system like the defaults command does.

:cool:

So, here's the short version of what I did to it since last post:
- failed at the text edit trick
- opened the plist itself, altered, saved
- installed nocturne, but only whiteUI half worked
- installed Obsidian on top of it, which only added the black menu (perfect)
- realized the "sliver" disappeared on it's own...
- hid the clock, notifications and chrome notifications (thanks Google)
- added basic clock and date Geeklets using commands and changed font etc
- experimented with different Geeklets until I had 3 working indicators for Proc, Disk, and Ram
- scaled the original Gill Sans dock halfway up the dock for slight 3d look

If there were anything else I could improve right now it would be changing the font of the menubar to Gill Sans and having dynamic white icons for Time Machine and Drop Box.

But yeah, I'm freaking amazed at how this worked out! Wolf... thanks man! :D
