Love my iPhone X, old ones look dated now. Took no time for me to get used to the gestures. Love the size compared to my 7 plus (which I found extremely difficult to use one handed). But I do agree control panel is a bit of a chore to access, but in no way a deal breaker.

People must have very small hands to struggle with it one handed

Teeny tiny hands. Because I would say I have rather small hands. The Plus models are too much for me to use one handed, but the X is very workable for me between features like reachability, one handed keyboards, and of course some shimmying of the phone around in my hand.

I prefer the X as the 8 looks very dated to me and I find Face ID and the gestures to be a better solution than Touch ID and the home button. I think that "perfected" feeling you are getting is more just familiarity.

The 8 is maybe a little easier to use is some ways, not in others. Make it even smaller, and it might be even easier (again in some ways)

Trade offs. So they see how this plays out, and the winner will survive.....hopefully :D

There's an App exclusively available for non-X form factor iPhones that throws a virtual white towel in the ring. It's a black & white App & very pixelated, just to drive the point home that you're using a relic of a device, compared to the X. :D

I tried to like the iPhone 6, then 6s, never got comfortable, ended up with an SE as I prefer single-handed use. I don’t mind a size between the SE and 6, but I had to readjust my grip too often on the larger phone.

The X compared to the 6/6s/7/8 is even bigger — wider, thicker, taller, heavier. Yet I found the gestures way better then my thumb acrobatics having to press, double-press or tap the Home button.

As I’ve had my X for a week or so now, I don’t recall having to adjust my grip anywhere near as often even than on the 6 I resurrected to run iOS 11 beta.

Mind you, I would buy a smaller X — provided it kept the dual cameras.
