I know where you are going with that but app switching is a bit too simplistic as well.

Applications can start up at opportunistic times based on usage, push notifications, timers, other tasks that are running at the same time that are related and etc. App Switching implies that its a bit of a dumb switch, but there is many many scenarios where it is actually multitasking. Not necessarily in the traditional sense though

Of course. What we consider multitasking in a pc environment doesn't quite translate on mobile platforms. If mobile phones did multitask in that manner battery impact would be huge. We're basically talking freeze/thaw tasking.

Yes, and I must say, for the most part the way that Apple implements these things, especially with iOS 8 enables with cross app communications really does cover the gaps pretty well.

If a secondary app is able to generate a view that the host app can view, that sounds to me that we could potentially end up in a scenario where we could actually be using something like BBEDIT on an iPad (if they made one) that links against a sandboxed implementation of Python in app for, and show the results in BBEDIT. Obviously this may be a bit of a stretch but it does led itself to many possibilities

CONTINUITY/HANDOFF

This alone justifies ios8

And for people who don't use Mac, which believe it or not is actually quite a large number? They're hardly adding features for everyone/appealing to a wider audience.

The majority of the main new features are all exclusive to people who have specific other devices etc.
Continuity/Handoff = Mac
HealthKit = Compatible Health accessories
HomeKit = Compatible Smart house accessories

But quick reply doesn't even work with "Show Preview" off. I don't want to allow anyone to see my messages just for the sake of a faster reply. They should allow it when previews are off.

I just don't allow anyone to get in the position to read my texts. Only person who does is my wife. If you don't catch the preview from when it displays in notifications within 5 or 6 secs then it does go away and will appear again depending on your settings for it. So unless someone you don't want to see it is right there looking at your phone at the time the preview comes up then they won't see it. I love it because I don't have to jump out of an app i'm in to reply. It's one of the best features ever.

But for someone like me, who is a student, people often joke around and hide others' phones. I don't want them being able to see any messages that come through, or any I just haven't yet replied to.
Others are the same. If you leave your phone on your desk etc. then do you want someone to be able to walk past and read them? It only takes a second so even someone just quickly walking past would be able to do it...

Am I missing something? If preview is off, how do you know what to say as a reply in your quick response?

Or does the message show as you swipe down?

On iOS 7 the message shows as you swipe down. On iOS 8 it doesn't even let you swipe down...

Continuity isn't just for Mac users; It also works between different iOS devices.

On iOS 7 the message shows as you swipe down. On iOS 8 it doesn't even let you swipe down...
Well, again, it's not that iOS 7 shows you the message when you swipe down it's that swiping down in iOS 7 simply brings down the notification center where you can see the message. That pull down was changed in iOS 8 so that it's used for quick reply actions instead of bringing down the notification center. So they need to add something slightly different and in a way new to deal with it when previews are turned off. In the meantime you can sort of flick the notification up and then pull down the notification center and read it as before and even have quick reply options there now.

Lack of multiuser / windowed multitasking support is a definite letdown.

Manual camera support is, however, GREAT. I'm in the process of producing something very similar to Nokia's own, excellent Camera Pro app for iOS - as open source and NOW so that you can all start using it during the Summer, before the official release of iOS8. I'm absolutely sure I'll succeed and you'll LOVE my app!

(My first posts and source code releases on the matter are HERE.)

Yeah, true, that is annoying but hey, it's the first beta. If Apple can introduce Quick Reply but only allows it with preview messages on, who knows, in future beta's, it may be available with preview messages off.

But if the preview is off how the **** will you quick reply without knowing what the message is...??!!!!!

Go to notification centre instead of it just being on the homescreen, and QR from there???

Then how difficult is it to access the messages app...? For most people it is in the dock I'm sure... This is nitpicking seriously...

I got a mac over a year ago. I grew tired of replacing laptops that got viruses on them and new ones that my virus software didn't pick up. Are macs prone to viruses? Sure they are but the majority of people are windows users so most of the viruses are written for Windows. Yes I will admit that Apple is late with features but iOS 8 will be great for everyone because developers are going to create some amazing Apps. I'm sure there will be more features that weren't talked about revealed later this fall.

Simply talking about Apple adding the possibility of pulling down a notification that doesn't have a preview to reveal that preview and quick reply options along with that. Not far fetched given what Apple is offering and a possibility given that it's only a first beta. How could someone talking about a possibly like this bother someone so much?

I agree with the overall statements but would have to say that there have been a number of laptops that have lasted years in my family without any viruses or issues. Not hard at all to have PCs with Windows and use them just fine for a long time. Not really that that's what the thread is about though, so it's all good.

It's not hard depending on your usage. Windows makes a very capable web browsing machine.

Windows still does have issues with gradual slow downs over time especially if you are experimenting with settings and betas and etc. same can be said of the mac but I can run a few scripts and get mostly back to a optimal performance on a Mac while on windows it's much more of a chore since you basically have to reinstall windows.

Well, seeing as they've copied jailbreak tweaks with some things, they could've gone all out and added theming (maybe limited to Apple-designed themes), bootlogo changes, pattern passcodes etc.

Some phones also have "power options" for the camera, such as shutter speed, iso options etc.

Another nice thing to have is they could have started signing older versions of iOS again. I know people who are using iOS 7 on an iPhone 4 and are stuck with incredibly slow loading times. Imagine if they let people like them go back down to iOS 6/5?

Go, apple.

That is exactly what I was thinking... It's the sort of stuff that should have been added in a 7.x update, such as 7.2, not a "full" iOS update.

***Dev part of the presentation gave developers to create apps that can communicate with other apps and apple's apps and system wide, too. So, Dev can create apps to have themes, boot logo, etc.
*** Again, Camera Kit will allow this!!

I think Apple felt security, privacy and ingretation were more important than wide open sporadic approach.

Apple continues to deliver and expand upon the most sensible multitasking.

And never at any point is the most sensible multitasking showing you 2 apps at once running full power.

I think iOS 8 was one of the best announcements Apple have made in recent years. I thought iOS 7 was brilliant too since it brought a much needed ovevhaul to the visual style.

It's a let down for me personally.

- No text message delivery receipts.
- No multiple user system.
- No widgets on home screen
- No favourite people short cuts on home screen.
- No ability to save ringtones from an app directly to ringtones (that I know of yet ...)
- No third party live wallpapers.

look like you want an Android instead.

I don't think it was a huge letdown. The features that were announced are def a plus. I tested the quick reply and it's one of the best things they could of added to iOS.

Having Android devices for years here are my replies:

- People still use SMS? I can see the advantage if they do
- Currently broken on Android. Tried in on A Nexus 10 and 7 and it's a lagfest for some reason
- You will find that the notification pane is a far superior placement of this
- In Recents is actually a better placement. Home screens cluttered with apps widgets and favorites are very inefficient. After 4 years, 100's of ROMs and tons of know how if have resorted to the simple folder + clock widget... No other apps, widgets or favorites exist. In theory they are great but in practice they are rather useless
- Another one that yeah it's beneficial but not crucial.
- Lagfest, Lagfest and can I say it again... lagfest. Live Wallpapers are just bad. Except for the ones that auto rotate your wallpaper periodically. But actual moving wallpapers have lagged on every version of the OS since they were introduced in 2.1

I understand that from this side of the fence it looks appealing, but all those let downs are not crucial or of any/little benefit. There are only 2 things I will miss when I swap to the iPhone6. Drag and drop files from a PC, and Notification lights. Otherwise the trade off of features to benefits is off. iOS runs smoother most of the time, and looks better while doing it and for me has better features such as Continuity.
