NO! I'm sitting on set right now burning DVD deliverables for my client per their demand. And it turns out my clients don't care what Steve Jobs thinks they should want.

So then it actually won't surprise me if they take it out.

I'm pleasantly surprised that almost all of you think the same way as I do about optical media… it's redundant. Get rid of it!

The App Store has been released for over 4 hours now...

And a cd isnt a dead media, look how much music is sold via cd...Wal-Mart, FYE, Target, and K-Mart just to name a few locals. What about car stereos? Are we supposed to haul our ipods around everywhere to have music in the car? Many cars from factory have a Double-Din setup which supports ONLY cd...few support an AUX input let alone a USB input and a Double-Din radio is very expensive plus they arent the easiest thing to replace in a car. And im sure you think AM/FM radio is dead too.

You can rip a CD though. Its a better option than switching between them on your computer even when you have a CD drive on hand all the time.

And now i just had a producer walk up and demand a CD of all the audio tracks for them to listen to in the car ride to another location.

I have to wonder how many of the people for removing the optical drive actually use their MacBookPros, for "pro" work with clients
you know, running the "pro" applications apple makes)? If you want a "cool" "thin" looking computer to sit around in Starbucks with watching movies, checking your Failbook page, or acting like your writing, get an AIR.

I don't want to have a superdrive. I don't use it. But others do. How do we solve this problem?

It is very simple. Apple, upon the refresh, should give customers the option to have the superdrive or replace it with something else. It is not difficult to remove so this really isn't a problem.

The Macbook PRO is a consumer device. It is not designed with only professionals in mind. It works well for professionals and marketing it for "professionals" will increase sales. But consumers are going to be the ones who make the bulk of the purchases of the MBP.

Saying that a superdrive is important because a small amount of people need to have 24/7 access to a CD burner doesn't make it a necessity.

I want it to go. I think it will stay.

Come on, you know it's not that simple. You can do all kinds of neat stuff with a Mac that don't require an optical drive. Not all produce music.

then stick with your current laptop and don't buy the updated mbp when it comes out WITHOUT an optical drive. no one is forcing you to buy the updated version. lulz

Its not that difficult to remove?? For Apple, this would require making another unibody chassis without the slot, and redesigning half of the inside of the chassis... Yes throwing an optibay in is easy, but apple isnt going to do that.

Another thing, they would have to find gpus, ssd, hdd, or whatever and find out how to mount it in that space. Unless they use two batteries, they would have to make a big L shaped battery which im sure is harder to produce if they can do it like that and if they make it two batteries that means they have to design another battery and stock it.

They just dont go to a magical computer and say super drive be gone...

Its mostly students and people that fail at windows that get MBP13s or people that just want to look cool. People that specialize in making audio CDs? Not very many. Most real professionals, with the exception an industry or two, are still using windows.

I doubt there are very many cases were some one walks up to you and wants a bunch of audio CDs to listen to in his car in a place were you are not near a desktop or a cd drive and yet have the room to carry a bunch of cds.

They wouldn't just remake the chassis without the OD while keeping everything else the same, they would do a whole redesign. They redesign all their products from time to time, so I'm sure if they plan to remove the OD they would do it as part of a new chassis with other changes as well.

No one's forcing you to buy a Pro either. Get an air and stop complaining the pro model gets catered to you.

air is underpowered. the benefits of removing the optical drive outweigh the small inconvenience. I don't even know what to tell you.

There are many other differences between a MBP and MBA, such as dedicated graphics and standard voltage processors. An MBA would play WoW and Elder Scrolls V just as well as an MBP, amiright? Get an external disc drive.

Yea, it's mostly students who get the 13s. I'm working of a video set right now in Final Cut Pro, editing/capturing. Most of my main clients do this type of workflow now, and they demand DVD's, CDs, and even Blue Rays, on the spot. I can hold off the Blue Ray request (those are few, but do happen), but I would hate to have to now pack an external DVD burner on the plane just so some college kid can look cool.

I'm leaving in 20 for my next location which will be the back of a golf cart at a horse ranch. Dragging around external burners is not very "pro".

Underpowered for what??? What are you doing with it?

If you want to game, get a PC. And the removal of the drive would be a MAJOR inconvenience to me, but I guess since you think the computing world revolves around what you want, it may be "small" then.

Yes, "Pro" means playing better video games.

I'll get an external when you get a job.

The world is slowly moving away from CD and DVD technology. Some use it now. Less will use it in the future. We can agree on this, right?

Maybe it would help if we posted how many times in the last month we used a DVD drive.

I'll start.

Truthfully: Zero.

I'm at uni and I have a job, thanks much. Better go buy that external. You'd do well to not make yourself look like such a condescending fool in the future. ;)

You're trying to wrap the MBP around your wants and desires just as much as everyone else in this thread. It's pretty hard to justify that "pro" has any real meaning to Apple considering that they don't even support Blu-ray.

The fact is that more people would benefit from higher end hardware than from an internal optical drive. You can't replace the lost functionality of using a lower end processor and GPU like you can replace the lost functionality of optical by using an external. If you have room for all those discs, then you should have room for the tiny optical drive that Apple sells.

I use it a lot, but that's just because I have a lot of DVDs (currently going through my Monty Python box set, on disc 12) and I could live without it (but I just got mine so removing it now won't bother me at all!)

I would be curious to know how many MacBook Pro users (not just on this forum) actually don't use it and how many are forced to by clients who demand burned CDs for their cars (I guess there isn't a good standardized way to email them music files to listen to on their smartphones)

One last post before we get on the bus for the next location. One of the other editors here just read some of these comments and made a statement to the effect that one of the problems Apple is creating, is they take into account the opinions and uses of the "pro" machines, by people who never use any of apples "pro" apps on a daily basis.

As elitist as that sounds, the "pro" machines where always made for a niche market of pro users. Hence the "pro" designation. Most of the people complaining about removing capabilities of the macbook pro have never opened Final Cut, or Logic with a client over their shoulder, and really should be complaining to buff the macbooks, and AIRs.

Anyhow didn't mean to come off as insulting (too much :) ) but many of us depend of these machines for our livelihood, and they are the best machines to do so. We would just like them to stay so and not cater to people who should really be using something else but want to look cool.
