BTO 2011 27" iMac with 3.4GHz quad-core Core i7 CPU, 2GB AMD Radeon 6970M GPU, and 16GB RAM here and couldn't be happier. :D

I love my iMac and honestly, this is the finest computer I have ever used and owned. :D

I bought the first generation 27 i5 (late 2009) and just had Apple replace the HDD (Applecare) with brand new one. They gave me back my old one and to my surprise, they didn't even bother fixing the permissions. Ran the HDD with an EZ Dock in disk utility and it fixed the few broken permissions.

Now I have another great working HDD thanks to Applecare and a like new iMac that runs perfectly!

Couldn't be happier!

I really want an iMac (27 inch, 2.7 CPU) After going through this forum for the past couple of days I'm now not so sure.

Potential problems
1. Dirty screen from inadequate sealing of the case, yellow tinge etc
2. Wifi dropping out
3. Noisy hd

Anything else I missed?

Wifi dropping out is the only *real* problem as the Lion drivers are buggy.

Yellow tingle appears to be one of those urban myths - while there are obviously some defective screens, absolute majority of iMacs have no more yellow tingle than any other display on the market; of course, people who really look for the yellow tingle will always find some. Most seem to confuse the IPS glow for the yellow tingle, and yes, iMac exhibits moderate IPS glow.

Why don't you drive over to the nearest Apple Store and test drive one?
Personally, I really like my iMac ( Dec. 2011 ). I don't have any of the issues you speak of. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have.

This works for most, but for me it's the opposite. I'd usually go into the Apple Store prepared to buy an iMac, but come out confused, wondering whether I should buy an iMac, Mac mini, or a MacBook Pro.

Who says Apple doesn't have enough options?

Thanks for all the replies. I really appreciate your time and effort.

I LOVE the 27inch screen. Its my major reason for wanting the imac. Its actually pretty good value also compared to mac mini with all the accessories and screen.

Would I be a bit silly not to get apple care? Its $268 in Australia. How many people have used the extended warranty? Do most apple users get it?

And do you have to get it at purchase time or can you buy it before the 1 year warranty expires? (I seem to recall someone got it just before their original warranty expired?)

What I do is wait on the Apple Care. If after 11 mo. I have had no issues, I usually go without. Here in the US we have until the original warranty expires to purchase it.

I would always buy AppleCare. Maybe that's because I had a few problems with my 2009 iMac (broken magic mouse, defective ethernet port and defective HDD temperature sensor). These problems all came up after 1 and 2 years.

I have an iMac that is going on 2 years. Love it. It is a great as the day I unboxed it, not a single problem. I would also suggest AppleCare.

Im still using my 2008 24" iMac where alot of people complained about the same things like yellow screen ect but mine has been flawless. It never gets tuned off as it is always left on seeding torrents ect and it has never missed a beat, it was even easy to upgrade the HDD to a 2tb, ive actually pulled the whole thing apart twice to upgrade the drive lol . Ive only just noticed the screen has a slight yellow tinge as my new MBA's screen is very neutral and it is easy to see when they are side by side. I will be upgrading my iMac when the next revision comes out without hesitation.

I LOVE our iMacs. I am VERY happy we finally switch from Windows to Mac back in 2007.

Our first 2 24" did have internal HD go out at almost 3 years. But we had AppleCare, we had backups and Apple replaced them lickity split. Never any noise problems.
In fact that is one reason I wanted to get our kids onto our old iMacs. I was tired of hearing their PCs.

So we bought new 2011 27" refurbs and they are simply perfect. No problem with the screen. Granted we have only had them almost 2 months and haven't really rode them hard yet. Still we are on them a ton.

The 2007 iMacs the kids use are still working great with Lion and 4GB RAM.

I only seemed to have a little Wifi issue and that was related to the router dropping out and the Mac attaching to a neighbor. You can disable that "feature" and it won't do look for other networks.

the dirty screen issue is a deal killer for me.im not prepared to fight with apple to fix it or pull it apart and fix it myself. What percentage of users do you think have these problems?

So convince me to buy an iMac please. Any good news stories?

Should I get a Mac mini instead?

Have 3 27 iMacs from over the last 3 years. An '09, '10 and '11.
No cloudy discolored screens
Zero WiFi dropping issues.
No loud hard drives, best is to add an SSD and really enjoy the speed.
The'10 machine is used in a medical office and uses Windows via Parallels and hasn't let us down once. Very stable machine.

I've had nothing but positive experiences with my machines.
All of them are at 8GB with use of OWC RAM, not Crucial.

I own several iMacs, and have had none of the problems you listed(that was actually the computer). I have the dropped wifi problem at all three of my houses, but thats a router problem because all of my computers (I'm normally running 3), my iPad (or 2), and my iPhone(and the others in my family) drop the signal at the same time.

So the wifi is a router thing (I'm waiting for the 802.11ac to get a time capsule), and other than that I've had no problems whatsoever.

I say go for it.

If it makes you feel any better I haven't had any of those problems with my iMac 27", though it's from the mid-2010 line not the most recent.

I've been having the wi-fi issue since getting my new 27" i7 3.4 1GB Graphics 16GB Ram - but I still love it. I've been able to tinker with the network settings to minimize them. I've run the screen test and have no missing pixels either, the display is fantastic. This thing screams and I used to use a Pro Xeon workstation (2009). I also like the fact that I can still put more ram in it and upgrade to a 2GB video card in the future.

Oh yes I do love my iMac.

But then the screen had grey smudge...

And it does come back

I've a 27" 2009 iMac.

1. Screen is perfect
2. I use a wired connection, why cripple such a beast with WiFi.
3. I dropped an SSD into it. Major storage is on a NAS (+TM)

For what you're doing, Mac mini's probably enough.

The number of iMac problems you see here is miniscule compared to the number of problems you see on Windows. Since you're an IT professional you shouldn't have most of those problems anyway.

And also Apple Care

iMac is a piece of hardware, Windows is software. You can't compare these. Windows is comparable to OS X.

21.5" iMac with 256GB SSD owner here.

The LED backlighting gives me a lightheaded feeling and eye strain. At this point, it's sitting unused collecting dust until I find a way to sell it. Strange as I have an LED edge lit HDTV that does not cause any issues.

I tried adjusting the brightness, contrast, tried the Shades app, changing Gamma settings etc, no avail.

Except for three HDD's drives crashing (on 17", 20" & my 24") I love my/our iMacs.

When my 24"'s HDD crashed, I thought about buying ASUS All-in-One but I can't go back to Windows. I'm going to buy my second iMac but just waiting for Apple.
