Thanks for all the replies. I really appreciate your time and effort.

I LOVE the 27inch screen. Its my major reason for wanting the imac. Its actually pretty good value also compared to mac mini with all the accessories and screen.

Would I be a bit silly not to get apple care? Its $268 in Australia. How many people have used the extended warranty? Do most apple users get it?

And do you have to get it at purchase time or can you buy it before the 1 year warranty expires? (I seem to recall someone got it just before their original warranty expired?)

The first thing you should do is check to see what the standard warranties that are given to you when you purchase a product. We in the USA are given limited warranties out of the box so buying Apple Care might actually be a good investment for us. Other countries however, primarily in Europe, have better warranties compared to what we in the USA get.

My personal philosophy is if the Apple product costs at least $1,000 and has a built-in display, Apple Care might be a very good investment.

2. Wifi dropping out

A very easy problem to fix!

1. Replace cheap ass routers that are more than 2 years old!. Most wireless router makers do a race to bottom causing them to use the cheapest parts they can find!

2. On a OS X open System Preferences->Network pane and at the top of the pane is 'Location'. Use that 'Location' drop-down to create a new Location calling it whatever you want. Don't worry your whining head off because it will act EXACTLY LIKE AUTOMATIC did! After making that new Location make sure you click on the 'Apply' button in the Network pane to save your new Location. This will fix 75% of OS X wireless problems. I say this because IMHO the 'Automatic' Location is broken!

Buy it !!! I love mine !!! I can't go long without touching it !! I have NO ISSUES whatsoever with mine.

We've had our 27" iMac a few months now and its by far and away the best computer we've owned.

It really is superb and looks so damn good ;)

Recently got a Mid 2011 27" i7 refurb and upped it to 12GB ram. I love it. It slaughters every Win PC I have ever owned, and I have owned/built A LOT of them over the years.

I picked up the Applecare also. Why not? for $139 (education pricing) I get 3 years of piece of mind.

I switched from a long time Windows user (all versions) to a Mac in 2010. I really love OSX and Apple in general. My family switched and couldn't be happier (and now require very little tech support from me :) )
Problem is anytime I try to explain how nice it is just to be able to reliably use my Mac the Windows diehards simply think I've drank the Cool-Aid.

PS Today I installed Xee (a photo viewer for OSX) and I'm happy to report one of my most hated OSX quibbles (I do not like viewing photos in Preview) has been put to rest. (I hated the Windows Registry more!) :apple:

I love Mine!!!
Needless to say, I have not had any of the problems complained about on this and other forums.
I have owned iMac's for several years. I have an '06 in my home still working fine, I have an '09, and '10, and '11 at the office, all are working well, and have no problems. These are primarily being used for running CS5 and are on working 8 hours a day.

2 iMac's the first iMac that I got was a impulse buy in August 2008 a 20' base model and the ine I am using for this posting it can with the 2.4 Ghz Intel core 2 duo.

The problems I had all related to my bride who decided that she wanted this iMac more for herself then letting me use it. So I go out and get a 2nd identical iMac 2 months later and we ditched any windows products from our home.

Both of these iMac's have run flawlessly ever since with absolutely no problems and I have to say to get more then a year out of the junk we used to buy was unexpected but now that we are used to Mac's we also have 3 MacBooks 2 aluminum and the most recent addition a 2007 that I got on the cheap from Craiglist for $40.00 because of a failed hard drive, replaced the hard drive and loaded Lion on it so we are up to 5 Mac's in this house.

Beautiful design. Good specs. Great stability. Lovely intuitive OS. Hopelessly and utterly flawed by Wifi problems that render it totally unfit for purpose. (and that was on two completely different routers including a brand new one. even applecare were unable to fix).

Reluctantly returned under the 14 day remorse period for a full refund.

iMac from '08 had bad ghosting on the monitor. Not sure if I was the cause of that or not -- shouldn't have happened at any rate but have never experienced the "blotching" others say they have.

I have a 2011 now ... no screen problems, no HD noise. A seriously beautiful machine.

One thing I would ask yourself is how much you really need the firepower in the high end model. For most stuff this is simply ridiculous overkill, esp. for a Mac. I happen to use mine for programming and mundane daily things so I got base model and it still can crank games and other apps. without breaking a sweat. Thing is seriously beast-mode.

Built a dope PC for everything else :)

Absolutely agree with what you said about trying to explain to Windows users about how reliable a Mac is.

Thanks for the Xee. Just what I needed.

Now that I've got a good set of crucial 8GB added in..I'm absolutely thrilled with this computer.Like many of you I was a windows user for 20+ years and shocked at how easy and enjoyable this is. I have to work on Windows PC's at my office and I can't stand it.

This is the perfect computer for me...! :)

Switched from Win to a MBA in Nov, and within a week got another MBA for my wife and a iMac for my daughter. Just wished I had got onto this a long time ago.

One thing to keep in mind is this - what you see on this forum is but a very small cross section of the community where only the bad experiences rise to the top. There are very few times you'll come across a thread started by a person who wanted to tell people on how great their experience is since their voice will tend to be drowned out by bad news - the old story of bad news travels faster than good.

As for the iMac - I've got an iMac, MacBook Pro and Mac mini, quite frankly the horror stories you hear on this forum is bad luck rather than more than anything else. Could you get a dud? sure but even the most rigorous testing in the world will never make things 100% so the best one can expect is that if something goes wrong that Apple promptly responds to rectify the issue.

Regarding PC experiences - lets remember to compare Apples with Apples, you can't compare a $300 el-cheapo Acer laptop to a top of the line Thinkpad from Lenovo, the two are targeted at completely different audiences. My experiences so far has been that if you do dole out the cash for a good PC laptop you'll get a similar experience to Mac but then again if it is the same price why go for the PC in the first place?

Funny that you brought this question up. I recently moved my business back to my home for a 3 to 6 month period due to the building I was in went into foreclosure and I can take my time to find a space that suits my needs without affecting my work.

My main computer was my 27" iMac. Every morning I loved turing it on and getting to work. I do very light web design with a heavy about of video/audio editing. The MacBook Pro I had before my iMac was not as comfortable to wok on, even with a decently priced 24" external and ergonomic desk set up. I have a Macbook now for running around, home, etc. and it's nothing like working on my iMac.

I'm contemplating selling my beautiful iMac as it's just under a year old and have been offered over $1000 for it. I only paid $1199 because it was refurbished through Apple. My plan is to go back to my old set up with an external, which I already have at home anyway.

BUT...I'm already having withdrawals. It's by far the most beautiful and smooth machine I've eve owned, plus you can put at least 16 gigs of ram in it which will take you well into the future. I have NO smearing issues because I don't touch the screen. I have no yellowing issues and don't really plan to hopefully. The hard drive isn't loud to me at all, actually I've never thought about it.

My one negative is once in a while when I wake it from sleep if falls back within about 10 seconds and it's caused me to lose a bit of work once, but everything has glitches. I pay over $130 a month for my ATT iPhone and have issues every day. I don't have issues even quarterly with my iMac.

So YES, YES, YES, buy one if you haven't already. Mines put away in the box since I left my office and ready to be sold for 90% of purchase price and I'm having trouble pulling the trigger...I love it.

I have a 2.5ghz 21.5" model and my only complaint is the noisey hard drive. It also drops wi-fi occasionally but that could easily be the router's fault.

There's no question that the Mac OS offers a stable "work" environment (until the hard drives get funky) and elegant interface, especially for running PC software (I used VMFUSION)--I actually spent more time "on the PC side" running Windows XP than on the Apple side. From that angle it's a great Windows PC.

Does anyone like their iMac?

Yes. Best computer I've ever owned.
Some, ahem, display issues---WHICH NOT EVERYONE EXPERIENCES!---aside. I'd buy another without hesitation, hoping I wouldn't, ahem, again experience this particular display issue---WHICH NOT EVERYONE EXPERIENCES!;)

I use a 2011 BTO 27" iMac at work that is now about half a year old. No problems so far and I love (not like, love) the machine. My only quibble is that the 256GB SSD is too small...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

I love my 21.5" 2.5 i5 iMac! I still get giddy when I think about it. I just installed 8 more gigs of ram to make 12. Awesome is the only word I can think of to describe it.
