I tried it once with my old 3G iPhone. I ended up having to charge my phone 3 times a day and went back to the standard OS. Never went back to it again, although I'm sure it's been improved since..

I jailbreak for several reasons, one is the Rotation Lock which is now built in so no worries there but several other apps like Rename (To Rename Apps :p), Poof! (To Hide apps like Boxcar as it pushes stuff automatically, not needed and also apps like Stocks which nobody needs ), I'm sure one of the number one reasons is SBSettings, very useful indeed and needs no explanations.

My biggest reason to jailbreak is bitesms. Man I miss it. Sbssettings is another, and custom SMS tones. I used to use the blow off valve.

Rubbish. If you could not get free apps by jailbreaking, you wouldn't do it. Same reason why people hack their PSP. "to run homebrew" they all cry...grabage. It's for piracy and you know it.

That's a ridiculous thing to say. This is nothing like PSP homebrew. People were jailbreaking iPhones long before installuous became was released. A big part of the App Store's early success was due to the hard working developers who were putting out software via Installer when Apple offered NOTHING.

I personally can't wait until one of the groups release a tool to jailbreak the i4. I miss having status notifier, SBsettings, and MyWi. There are several others I used, but I'm sure I could live without them unlike these.

I do not, and will not jailbreak. I did on an older phone, and had nothing but performance issues. Lag, crashes, glitches, constant restores, re-jailbreaking, and process of elimination to find the culprit... Nothing but headaches, for me anyway.

I need my phone to work at it's best, so I choose to use it as intended.

This.

You have to ask yourself...what special feature is SO important to you that you really want to remove the factory designed and optimized OS and replace it with an OS built by a bunch of amateurs following absolutely zero standards and looking out only for the best interests of their own little fart widget or whatever.

Jailbreaking is for hobbyists and those who just like to "stick it to da man" for the sake of the sticking it part.....

I jailbreak only when my contract is up so I can unlock. As I See it once I've satisfied the contract & put a couple thou. in ATT's pocket, it't MY phone and I should be able to use it on any compatible network I choose.

The media makes so many inconsequential reports on the iPhone (long lines...woo) I wish for once they would expose this refusal to unlock scam -- and it is a scam. We buy, not lease, our phones, yet we are treated like we rent them.

I haven't bothered to jailbreak my iPhone since I got my 3GS. I did jailbreak my 3G before that, but didn't want to bother again with the 3GS. With iOS4 on my iP4, I still don't see the need. However, I think I will have to jailbreak my iP4 if I buy an iPad to load up that app that turns the iPhone into a hotspot, because I just can't see spending more money for an iPad with 3G, plus the data plan, since I'm already paying for my iPhone's data plan. And since Apple/AT&T aren't allowing tethering of the iPad to the iPhone, that's the only way around it.

i love the jailbreak threads, it's a nice way of bringing all the ill-informed users together so they can talk rubbish and back each other up.

for me the single most important app for the iphone is lockinfo. being able to see your unread email count without unlocking the phone is great. just tap the sleep button to check all notifications, and they dont overwrite each other. being able to then block popups while the phone is unlocked is another great feature (same app). if the phone is unlocked im using it, so i dont need the big obtrusive blue bubble interrupting whatever it is that i might be doing, i just need a notification badge and a sound (if i choose). i havent been following the community lately, but my understanding is theres still no jailbreak for iphone 4. when we get one i may just have to go back. i've been about 2 weeks on os4 without a jailbreak, trying to get used to it because i knew we wouldn't have it for a while after the iphone 4 release, and i'm slowly getting worn down by the standard notification system and wanting jailbreak back.

I jailbreak it for the mother****ing free apps, and so do 99% of the righteous *******s that say otherwise.

Kiss your mother with that mouth? ;)

Anyway, I've never JB'd any of my 3 iPhones. Never felt the need. Don't think I care, either. All the iOS versions have been fine, and have done what I needed them to.

Apple itself has borrowed ideas from Jailbreak 'amateurs', Let's call them Enthuisiasts. I agree that some apps are totally useless like countless 'fart' apps, but you look at the Official App Store as well, c'mon some of the applications are ridiculous. Installer was really the first App Store on the iOS and Apple developed their own.

Some Apps are very useful, but is a niche that most people do not want to visit. SBSettings is very useful, and apps such as Rename are also useful, you can hide apps you don't need? Stocks and iTunes?. Tether for free. Yeah.

I hardly think some of the apps are Zero Standards, they don't get paid for their work (Some do now with Cydia Store, but apps mentioned are FREE), would you make an amazing app which may require heavy funding for Free? No, so don't be so quick to criticise.

If you don't mind SIM-swapping, your i4 microsim will work on the iPad 3G.

jailbreaking ... doesnt have any "spyware" the repo owners will take anything bad down.

Bold statement- how would you know such a thing?

JB disables some of the security of iOS such as not allowing unsigned apps. If you trust the writers of the JB software (how would you even know who they are?) and all of the apps you install with every bit of personal and financial information that crosses your phone, by all means JB.

It's true that JB brings some really cool stuff, but the huge security risk should definitely be considered.

^I might only be 19 but LockInfo, Wi-fi Sync and SbSettings are pretty damn useful.
so is installous...

My point here being that the jailbreaking of the iPhone can in fact be useful.

Can, in fact, be useful. Is, in fact, mostly used for free apps.

Yeah, that's an option, but it's too much work. That, and I'm an on call IT tech, so I usually have to have my phone at the ready for work. I suppose it would make sense for some.

Apparently you really have NEVER jailbroken your phone before.

I did the process with my ipod touch. Will do it with my iPhone 4 as soon as there is one available and people have used it for a few weeks without issue.

The best things would be using Facetime over 3G and having all apps free. I'm a bit annoyed that I actually had to spend money on an app, so I'm going to try to hold off on buying anything else.

Jailbreak will always stay ahead of the curve. Prior to the app store, jailbreak had its own access to third party apps. Prior to multi-task, jailbreak had access to multi-task. Just about every new big great idea that Apple has introduced, jailbreak community has "beta" tested it for months.

It isn't for everyone and certainly not for those that cannot properly operate a computer.

To answer your original question: Yes, the majority of iPhone users do not jailbreak their phones. If you're talking about Macrumors members, then it may be 50/50 or slightly more jailbroken, but when your talking about every iphone user, the jailbroken community is only a small fraction of the number of iPhone users.

I used to jailbreak but I don't anymore. I miss some things from being jailbroken, but everything else seems to work better when I'm not. When jailbroken, I'd occasionally have a random crash and I'd have to sit there and hope that my phone would boot back up and I wouldn't need to restore. Also, the battery life wasn't quite as good as the stock OS for me.

God forbid you have to pay a developer $1 or $2 for creating an app for you. You have the money to own a $300 cell phone and then pay $100/month but that $1 app really set you over the edge. Go ahead and steal all your apps if you think that's an okay thing to do.

The allure of piracy and free apps is too strong for most < 30yr old users to avoid, so yeah I'd say most in that demographic crack it for the free apps. The "functionality" excuse is just that, an excuse. :p

Thats complete Bulls7hit.. "functionality excuse" ..I will LIST examples that are NOT excuses

Irealsms3.0..you can reply to a text no matter what app you are in.. or with a simple push of the volume button you can text anyone from any app.. EXCUSE huh??? i think not..

SBS-with a simple swipe i can toggle 3G/wifi/ brightness/SSH/Tethering

Mywi-Tethering to my laptop on my unlimited iphone plan

those three right there are HUGE for me.. so please how are those excuses ?

I used to jailbreak my 1G iPod touch a few years ago, back in the day of 1.x software. Back then, it added a lot of new functionality and made the devicce much more useful. Now, there's really no reason to jailbreak other than to get cracked apps, and maybe to install themes.

or read my above post  .. its funny how you say you jailbroke in the 1x days .. so you have ABSOLUTELY no idea what functionality it provides.
