I'm getting my first iPhone with the iPhone 4, but I'm not (completely) new to OS. After skimming through countless threads on here for years (or at least since March 2008 when I got my first MBP) and finally getting the to ask myself question: is jailbreaking the phone really worth it? I'm not really for modding any type of original software provided with anything, but I've read numerous times that an iPhone is best when jailbroken. I guess I'm just paranoid about breaking warranties with AppleCare/Squaretrade, completely ruining the phone's usefulness or bogging it down with malware, etc. One reason I like the iPhone is because of the curated AppStore that provides a security blanket, but JB'ing an iPhone seems to go completely against that.

I'm not going to be an idiot and download anything advertised for the iPhone, but I also don't care to JB it if it's not really going to enhance my experience with it. So my question again is if it's really worth JB'ing, especially with iOS 4, or is iOS 4 going to work well enough?

And if there's a thread about this already, sorry. I searched and after seeing a page full of everything but a thread devoted to this, I decided to create my own.

To answer the thread title, I would think that very few of the general public would even know what you are talking about when you mention jail breaking. A very small percentage would be doing it. If you are talking about people on this forum, then obviously a much higher percentage would do so, but I doubt that it's really high.

I didn't jailbreak my iPhone.

First, I'm not a super techi person and I don't know how, but I could probably figure it out if I wanted to. But then once it was jb I would be scared to call Apple if I had a problem with it because, well, I feel like it is kind of unethical. Idk...maybe it's not?

Second, why would I want to do that? Seriously, I really don't know... I don't know all of the benefits of jailbreaking, but I read here that one can acquire free apps. Cheapskates. Pay the forkin' dollar.

Give me some other reasons why an average iPhone user (who successfully upgraded to 4.0 and begrudgingly downgraded back to 3.1.3) should jb her iPhone.

I come to this site to learn more about Apple and Macs (we got a MacBook late '08) and I have found a plethora of information since I discovered MacRumors. So, thanks to everyone for enlightening me in the past and for continuing to do so in the future. :D

I never JailBroke mine (2G, 3G) and have no plans to jailbreak the i4 either. I knew what I could get, but it just didn't appeal to me enough to care, plus I'm lazy.

I'm not jailbreaking my iPhone. I'm paying in part for the wonderful software/hardware integration and the protection in the 'walled garden' of Apple.

If I wanted to screw w/ the phone, I would have kept my Moto Droid.

Surprised this hasn't been said... Jailbreaking is all software side. No modification of hardware.

If you do a simple restore in iTunes, you will have zero trace (essentitally) of anything and can proceed to make any warranty claims, etc, through Apple. Just clearing that up for the lot of people that are so against Jailbreaking who clearly don't really know what it does.

Sure, lots of people use it to install free Apps from the App store. I myself do it occasionally to try an App to see if I like it. If I do, i'll purchase it on the Appstore. If I don't, I'll delete the App and never look back. Many other people are the same way.. why should a Developer get $$ for making an App look pretty without providing any proof of it being functional, fun, stable, etc.

There are more positives to Jailbreaking as well, most of which have been said.

MyWi is a great tethering solution, I prefer it to the Official tethering / PDANet because it actually creates a mobile hotspot, usable by other laptops, iPods, etc. Instead of tethering by USB / Bluetooth which can be tricky / time consuming to setup. (Time consuming vs just connecting to a WiFi network).

SBSettings is another great app, it makes turning down Brightness, Wifi, 3G, Bluetooth, ETC. off/on a 2 second process. Just very conveinent.

Also use an app called mAdvlock that lets me lock certain Apps with a password, such as Mail or SMS. When I give them my phone I don't want people going through my stuff - so this helps tremendously.

There are many, many, little apps and tweaks that will help customize the phone and provide functionality that Apple has been slow to bring out or will not bring out (i.e Tethering, Multitasking, SMS Text tones...). The Jailbreaking community has been living with these features for years, iOS4 is just bringing these. Sure they might be a little better written, but "IMO" nothing that substantial.

To everyone saying how many errors / crashes / etc, if you go into Cydia and install every god damn winterboard theme, make your phone look like the Matrix, have a million Widgets on your home/lock screen, well, of course you will.

If you're a controlled user that only installs what you NEED and for functionality, well, you will have a minimal amount of battery life decrease and you won't have any crashes or errors, if you know what you're doing.

Jailbreaking isn't about picking the average iPhone user off the street and trying to convince them to do it to their phone. For a somewhat savvy 'nerd' that wants a little more from their iPhone that can understand what is being done, it works.

Apple's security blanket is nice for the average user. Nothing mysterious can be installed, and no problems really can arise. If you put a Jailbroken phone into the hands of a complete noob and idiot, sure, there can be a potential for a (quite) corrupted iPhone. Although, a simple software restore in iTunes will fix all of the problems.

I jailbroke my 3G several times but always went back to unbroken due to crashes and unacceptable slowness.

I'm planning on jailbreaking when I get my new iphone 4: I'd really like to get LockInfo, and also I want to temporarily unlock. I'm going to Germany this fall for 10 days, and I don't want to pay AT&T $1,000,000,000 for the privilege of using my phone during that time...

Other than that Folders was the biggest thing I was lacking.

I used to JB not anymore. It will drain your battery....yeah yeah it's not a myth. It does drain on my iphone without any JB apps installed, no backgrounder, I don't care what you have to say. Especially with IOS4 there's no need for JB. And it's not safe. I hate Cydia, it's slow clunky crap. You don't know what apps are on Cydia, NOT safe. I know people make excuses, Backgrounder is real multitasking...blah blah...customization, how much customization do you need? Really? People JB mostly for pirate apps. Admit it!!!!

I've jailbroken iPhones for others a few times when they request it, but have not jailbroken mine.

Without being pushy, I also let them know the risks, warn them they will need to reset and remove all traces of the jailbreak if they ever need to bring the iPhone back to Apple for service or they lose their warranty, and make sure they understand that they will need to be careful with updates and watch for instability for as long as they have their phone jailbroken. Otherwise, the way I see it, what you do on your iPhone is between you and Apple.

For me? it's not worth it. SBSettings and Miwi are neat little widgets, but the effort required to make them work, and inconvenience of dealing with the slowness and crashing just isn't worth it for me.

I would suggest that if you want a specific app or feature that you can get ONLY by jailbreaking, then jailbreak. But if you're doing it and don't know why you're doing it, or doing it "just because," then you're gonna find the hassles are not worth it. Don't do it unless you specifically know what you're going to do with it.

There used to be people on here who not only jailbroke, but would rip on others who didn't, like it's our duty to jailbreak or something. That "it's your business" thing cuts both ways. If someone truly believes it's your phone and you own it, then they should also beleive that it's your choice to jailbreak or not.

Ditto on the JB....

I will JB when the day of release for Iphone 4...

I already miss Mywi, SBS settings, Texting from any screen, email from any screen, Uwatch, Better Unlock, Tons of features apple could provide, but wont.

Its a must have in my book

Rubbish. If you could not get free apps by jailbreaking, you wouldn't do it. Same reason why people hack their PSP. "to run homebrew" they all cry...grabage. It's for piracy and you know it.

I had my 3GS Jailbroken for almost a year, and I NEVER downloaded any cracked or pirated apps. I jailbreak for things like Real Multitasking, SBSettings, QuickReplySMS, MyWi, 3G Unrestrictor, and other modifications. Stop accusing everyone that jailbreaks of stealing!

I had a WinMo phone prior to my 3G, i am done with custom ROMs and hacks and workarounds etc... .

I had a fleeting 3 second thought of jailbreaking the 3G after the i4 showed up on Thursday, but I have no desire to get back into that world again.

I am enjoying "it just works"

As a developer, I hate installous. I know first hand how hard it is to make these apps and how much time and energy the developers must put into creating them. The fact that people can jailbreak and steal developers' work like that really is a damn shame.

However, I fully support jailbreaking. That's because it absolutely does enhance the functionality of the phone. Even with iOS4, it is incredibly useful and I fault no one for jailbreaking responsibly. In fact, many developers are starting to make money in 3rd party app repositories. I think it's a great thing and in no way guarantees piracy or unethical behavior. As always, it's up the to user.

Yup, "it just works" and I want it to stay that way. I'm the biggest nerd around but I actually want my iPhone to work. No J/B for me. :)

This.

You have to ask yourself...what special feature is SO important to you that you really want to remove the factory designed and optimized OS and replace it with an OS built by a bunch of amateurs following absolutely zero standards and looking out only for the best interests of their own little fart widget or whatever.

You grossly misunderstand the way jailbreaking works. It doesn't REPLACE anything. 98% of the phone works exactly the same way it always did. JB just adds a few things and mainly lets you change some settings that you couldn't otherwise change.

If you don't want to use it, fine. But at least have some idea what the hell you are talking about before you go spouting off about it.

Obviously, you either can't figure out how to jailbreak, or you've had some bad experience with it or you wouldn't be so passionately against it. Sorry it was so difficult for you.

I think jailbreaking makes it work even better!

I upgraded to IOS4 on my 3GS, and I wish I could reply to texts on the lock screen, or have all the info I need on the lock screen, have my apps in REAL folders etc...

The funny thing about this thread is that if I gave you my iPhone 3GS... 99% of you wouldn't be able to tell it's jailbroken.

With SBSettings, I have MyWi, mAdvlock, etc. etc. all hidden in their own dock.

Of course I have iTunes, and a few other apps hidden, but in reality, if I gave you my phone, you wouldn't know.

My battery life doesn't suffer, either. I don't install stupid, unnecessary things that cause crashes / drain battery. Unless i'm using my iPhone for a Mobile Hotspot, then my battery life does suffer, a bit. ;)

I will, just for the themes. Before my iPhone 4, I jailbroke for backgrounder+proswitcher and themes. Now I just can't wait for hi-res icon themes to be released. Like http://cl.ly/1TlN, for example. There are some truly talented artists that create beautiful themes!

Edit: Oh snap, forgot my favorite part: better fonts. I'm actually very impressed with the clarity and sharpness of the default font on the retina display, but that just means Calibri will look even *better*!

Jailbreaking is for hobbyists and those who just like to "stick it to da man" for the sake of the sticking it part.....

Your ignorance is astounding.

I don't want to risk messing anything up on the phone so I've never done it. I think the phone is fine as it is.
