Some people still value things like honor, personal integrity and honesty.

I understand that for some people it can be a difficult concept to grasp, but it is worth becoming familiar with it even if they choose not to practice it themselves. It will help explain the lack of trust from others.

Oh please.....

Totally agree here. I was considering just risking it and using a link I found on a webpage that allows you to buy using HE discount as if you were on your university network. However, I think I'd rather not take a chance and instead I'm going to get my cousin who is a uni student to help me out. Simples!

Take a chance on what? :apple:

----------

My only regret.....why didn't I think to do the before I ordered my rMBP!

Well I am here to tell you I have been checked. I had to email my school schedule and student id

Frankly, I'm skeptical of your post.

If Apple truly wanted proof I doubt they would ask for something like this. How did you send your schedule? Just a list you typed in or a scan of it? This would be easy to fake.

Also, your student id would also be easy to fake. Not as easy as the first, but nothing that photoshop couldn't do.

I believe if Apple was going to check they would contact the registrar but that also proves complicated.

Depending on the state, I'm not sure the registrar can confirm or deny you are student. Privacy laws are broad and vary somewhat from state to state.

For example, I have had parents want to talk to me about their child's grade in my class. By law, in my state, I cannot talk to them about their child's grade. They usually reply, "But I'm paying for his school!" That may be, but the child is registered, not the parent.

Lastly, the only time I have had to confirm a student is a student was a form I filled out along with the registrar that the student gave us permission to do.

No offense, I remain skeptical of your claim...

I purchased my Macbook Retina in an Apple Store. They asked for student status verification. And email wasn't enough, I was told, because some students keep their .edu email address for life.

They asked me to login to my school website to show that I was still a student. I'm in Texas and my school is in Ohio (Kent State).

You will find out over time that being dishonest gets you exactly what you deserve.

Theres being dishonest and theres saving £200... If I was buying something off a good mate or relative then I would be completely honest with them seeing as they're close. But when buying from a stranger or company I would be looking to save a few quid. Its a dog eat dog world these days and maybe you will find out over time that being too honest, noble and generous gets you exactly what you deserve, out of luck. I will look after myself, my family, my friends and people who can benefit me in the future but apart from that why should I do more? Call me an a****ole but at the end of the day I have to look out for myself. Don't get me wrong, I give to beggars and charities when I have the chance and help people in distress on the street, but im not going to go around being the good guy, because you can be assured most people wouldn't do the same for you.

hahaha your joking right? Now I understand those three things quite well but I dont see how saving £200 on a computer breaches any of these? Im pretty sure Apple can afford to lose this seeing as the profits they make on these things? hahaha jesus, what are you an eighteenth century knight or something? Its the 21st century, no one gives a crap about stuff like that anymore!

Perhaps you can use the 200 you save and buy yourself a middle school education.

I ordered my rmbp online and got the education discounts. I am now in the preparing for shipping stage, my card has been charged and no one has called/contacted me to verify that I am a student (I am, just pointing out that they usually don't check)

Last year I went to my local apple store to buy a MacBook air. I asked for student discount and the apple store employee said no problem. As I was taking out my student ID the employee said he that doesn't need to see it.

That being said I don't recommend people try to get the discount unless they are indeed eligible for it. If everyone abuses the discount Apple will certainly become more strict about making sure you are eligible. Or worse, they may stop offering the discount altogether.

Perhaps you can use the 200 you save and buy yourself a middle school education.

Why would I need a middle school education when I already have 11 GCSE's, 4 A level's and soon a degree? And I'm not entirely sure why you refer to me getting a middle school education? Is there something I've said that has put you under the impression that i am illiterate?

I'm sure Apple are the bastions of honesty and morality.. Shame on people for saving $200 of their own cash when buying from a global multinational who make significiant returns on their macs regardless of the discount or not. You're all going to liquidate Apple taking this discount.

More fault for Apple for not closing the loophole. And you know why it's not closed? Because they don't care as it benefits them regardless.

Hey,
I just wanna ask you guys if Apple will check it if I am a college student, when I order an MBP online?

We live in a truly wonderful world. Used to be self-respect was expensive enough that only rich people could buy it, now it's cheap and anyone can afford it.

My roommate is doing a program at a college, and he has a school ID for it. Can I go to the Apple Store with his ID and have them use his info for the discount? Has anyone done this when buying for a roommate or friend?

Yes, they check a random sampling of orders. Are you willing to commit fraud for a small discount?

Fraud is entirely the wrong term as far as i'm concerned. The purchasing of products at a small discount cannot, in any sense of the word, be considered an act of fraud.

Naughty it may be, but you're still parting large sums of your own money in return for what are extortionately high priced gadgets.

Agree. An apple employee asked my uncle if he had anyone he knew going to college. He said yes and they gave him the discount without any further proof. It's probably luck of the draw whether you get away with it or not

Seriously...this thread is stupid. Its plain and simple. I bought my MacBook pro from the Apple store. The guy asked if I had a student ID...Im 46 and I did from years ago. He never asked if I was in school and automatically gave me the discount. Was it dishonest...no..I had the student ID. Was it morally wrong...perhaps..to be judged at a later time. Did I take the discount..Yes I did..for those of you who think am wrong for doing it....great..keep it to yourself. When you become the chosen one and perfect then I will care about your opinion. Until then, when I am offered a discount I will take it.

Well said.

I really don't care if you are skeptical or not, just saying they have followed up on me verifying I was a student and had to send documentation supporting I was a student.

Seriously...this thread is stupid.

It *was* stupid 20 months ago. Now that it's been resurrected it's moved on to moronic.

for those of you who think am wrong for doing it....great..keep it to yourself. When you become the chosen one and perfect then I will care about your opinion.

Love the self-contradiction. You don't care about others' opinions, but anyone who thinks you're wrong shouldn't post.

I think the fraud folks are erring on the side of panic.

I'm a business executive that also has been in prior years, an adjunct professor at a local university. In addition, I've received several scholarships for law school and plan on enrolling part time this coming year.

Apple said "fine, fine, no problem, you qualify" for the apple edu discount. However, with an online order, there isn't a box to check for my scenario.

Solution? I bought from my alma matter's edu discount site at apple.com because I had to give them something.

Did I intend to defraud apple? No. Did apple give me a educational situation choice I could select that legitimately applied to the online order? No. Does apple have a case for fraud? No. Do they care? No.

Those that wake up with the intention to defraud apple of their edu discount will never get caught because apple doesn't care that much to spend a fortune sniffing out fraud and trying to prosecute it. It would be bad for business.

Simple solution: those that think they are legitimately entitled to the discount, opt to take it.

Yet it's wrong for Apple to charge you $200 for a RAM upgrade? Man, being born in the 90's sure gives you a different outlook on the world.

One day someone will realise that the "HE discounted price" is the actual true price of these items and that everyone who pays the RRP is basically paying 15% above normal pricing.

Makes you wonder how they can afford to give off 15% and still put $100bln in the bank

Lucky for me that i have 2 siblings and about 8 cousins who all go to University or will be going over the next 10 years and will enable me to get the discount.

Apple should really just scrap the discount and reduce all prices by 10% because this student discount thing is a joke.

If they want to help students maybe they should give free copies of iWork to students.

The discount thing is just a joke...

In case you didn't notice lieing about this is fraud.

Its not fraud.

Apple told the world that the iPad 3 is a 4G device. Except it forgot to tell everyone that its only a 4G device in America.

they didnt get done for fraud they got done for false advertising.

Consumer laws in the US are non existant and i have seen some of the worst lies being told by people selling stuff to people and its being going on for years.

Fraud is making money by deception and lets face it... its no different than telling a car salesman you can buy the same car for less down X's garage and getting him to throw in a discount, even though you know your making it up.

The only difference here is that Apple allows you to get this discount without the haggle and have set up an "education store" just because you purchase off that store doesnt mean you sign a legal document to say your a student.

Heck if your 17 years old your still a minor and you technically cant even agree to a legal agreement that your a student. Even if one existed. Its on Apples responsibility to check the criteria of the person making the purchase. But Apple are most likely spending their time counting the money.

OSX sits at a paltry 10% or so market share. id be more impressed with Apple if they just gave education pricing to everyone and increased their share to encourage developers to start taking the OS seriously.

They CAN afford it.

I have a friend that works at the Apple store and he said from his experience, 8 out of 10 buyers try in some way or another to get the student discount. Mom comes in to buy a laptop for herself, "ohh it's for my daughter, she's headed to college." Old couple come into to buy an iMac, "yea it's for our grandsons birthday." blah blah blah......the list goes on

Honestly, they don't give a sh-t and they aren't going to harass you for definitive proof. Apple get's their share of incentive from the government to provide "learning tools" to the education system. They still make a hefty profit!

They've never asked me for a student ID, either ordering online or in the Apple store. When I was in the Apple store I was not currently enrolled in school, but I was going to be in the fall and they let me have the discount despite not having a student ID. I wasn't lying, but I also wasn't currently a student, but the purchase was going to be used for school. I don't condone of committing fraud, but they haven't been too horrible about it.

One employee, however, told me I could not get the discount when I was ready to make the purchase. Another employee literally shoved him out of the way and said "let me get you all set up with that". I tried very hard not to laugh.

I wouldn't quite go as far to call this "fraud" (as opposed to, say, lying about water damage to a phone so you can get a free replacement) but would just ask people who are abusing the system if thy feel comfortable that the likelihood of this abuse will lead to the elimination of such a benefit for everyone. For example, WalMart had an amazing return policy in place for years where they would replace any electronics for free, no questions asked. amazingly enough, people heavily abused it by bringing 3 or 4 years old TVs back to swap out for new ones which inevitably led them to discontinue the practice. I'm not necessarily saying that people fleecing Apple for $200 a pop will eliminate the Ed discount, but it's certainly a lower and lower motivation for a company to be extremely forgiving and accommodating when the people you're helping just turn around and screw you for the effort.
